Richt had been very successful to this point, but had not played in three straight SEC Championsips, had won one but not played for a national championship. This is a critical juncture for Kirby, but I have confidence in him. He’s special.
The thinking is, IF they can 'break records' on offense, they can win championships since they now have a better Defense.
Richt focused on skill players, he didn't build the program for a strong D & O-line. Richt did more with less.
'Smart has also recruited at a level never seen before at UGA.'
And has one more win, two more losses.
How can anyone say Kirby is a 'better' coach than Richt, when he has MORE talent & has a WORSE record????????
Any one that compares Richt and Smart is foolish at best. Both ARE great coaches and men. IMO, the case can be made that they are more dissimilar than alike. Their records are similar in their first four years? Who cares! I love winning, I will take CKS eleven times out of ten.
Go Dawgs! Thank you Kirby for elevating our program for likely decades to come. God bless you and yours!
The problem with Richt was not the first four years it was the last ten.
To act like Kirby Smart has not been an upgrade over those last ten Richt years is nonsense. Given this season's circumstances, 2006-2015 Richt would have lost four or five games.
That's not to say Smart is going to do any better in the coming years. As it stands right now, the offensive outlook for next season is kind of ****. However, to make these first four season comparisons is really ****. Especially if you're using them in the context of "Bring back Bobo." Bring him back to return to the glory days of not winning championships of any kind? Because I hate to break it to people, and this is coming from someone who liked Bobo as a play caller, but Georgia didn't win a **** thing with him as the OC. They only broke a bunch of records. How's that going to change anything?
CMR was never handed the tools CKS has been handed or the amount of cash to pay his staff
I just do not see much a comparison one was an offensive expert the other is a Defensive expert
LSU looked like a CMR offense with a CKS Defense
Exactly. Different times... different circumstances. Would have loved to have had a college playoff during 2008 (I know this was Richt's 7th year). We were one of THE hottest teams out there and we ended up playing lowly Hawaii.
....and now there is moneyball to play. What will a championship team now cost? I can see Notre Dame wealthy alums spending more than a million to get to the championship game.
"... it seems that Smart would be ahead of Richt by good measure due to the fact that Smart led the Bulldogs to an appearance in the 2017 national championship game".
Kirby had the benefit of the playoffs in his second year. Richt didn't. Both coaches were/are good coaches for UGA.
I much prefer Smart to Richt. I think the Dawgs are in better hands. When Richt was at the helm, I never knew what to expect. I expect Smart's Dawgs to be better prepared and they usually are. Smart's recruiting is way better but this brings up a big concern with me. I thought, going into the season both our offense and our defense would be dominant. Our offense puzzles me. With our O-Line and the RBs we have we should be able to plow thru opposing defenses and with a seasoned QB our passing game should have been better. I'm with others who have posted here saying we need to go in a different direction and find a new OC. If we don't, I can't imagine getting the offensive recruits we will need to compete for the SEC East, the SEC, and National Championships. As a fan, I really don't want to see this same sort of offensive performance again next year. On the Jake Fromm subject, he had a subpar year and needs to come back for his senior year. I expect, with a new OC, he could flourish and be more like the Fromm we saw in '17 and '18.
In recruiting alone, Coach Smart is ahead of Coach Richt. He has had Georgia in the playoffs or conversations of the playoffs for 3 of the 4 years he's been head coach. I really liked Coach Richt, and still do, but it was time to make a change and I think Coach Smart was the right man for the job. He needs an Erk Russell for his offense like Dooley had for his defense. Could Mike Bobo be the man? I don't know, but I trust Coach Smart to make the right decision. I do appreciate the fact that now an 11-2 record is a reason for so much angst. I think with the coaching changes and losing all 5 of our top receivers from last year, 11-2 is pretty good so far. Keep playing hard and go out and win the Sugar Bowl and start 2020 on the right foot. Go Dawgs!
Once again, comparing Richt & Smart is ridiculous & silly. How about comparing Smart to Goff, or Donan, or Dooley for a change?? Richt & Smart coached in different times and the post seasons were completely different scenarios especially during the early 2000s compared to now. In terms of more recent comparisons, it is still apples & oranges. Money wins championships - at the very least, it begins there. Saddle Smart with the SAME assets that Richt had (no IPF, bottom tier in SEC in salaries, facilities among the bottom of the SEC, small support staff) and does anyone really & objectively think Smart could do better?? There would be no Pittman or McGee because the money would not be there. If you think otherwise, then UGA just needlessly spent millions upon millions these past few years for nothing. Richt will go down as one of UGA's best coaches. Let's just hope Kirby surpasses him with a few national titles because the support, and especially the talent is certainly there now.
Better go and find the best offensive minds that Georgia money can buy ASAP no excuses. If not and we are in trouble.
That elusive "promised land" of MontanaDawg's. My question: Is Kirby a Joshua? Even a Caleb? Does Kirby have the "vision" to see UGA to that land? What he does with his offensive coach and receiver recruting in the near term will decide it for us.
Do any of you really want Richt back? He’s a great Christian man but he was past his prime as a head coach.
I think there also needs to be an evaluation of the receivers coach. Failing to get any separation. Dropped passes. Poor "scramble" performance to help QB. And, our OL performance has been up and down. I suspect that this relates to blocking schemes that are part of the OC's "system". Is Fromm elite? Not if you define it to require that an elite QB has to have the "improvisational" ability that Hurts and Tua and Joe Burrows show. But, he understands concepts, and can be accurate with an adequate "window". Look at completion percentages with receivers who can actually get open. Unfortunately, Jake hasn't adjusted to not always having the kinds of receivers we lost. He was "spoiled" in his first years here.
ShoottheHooch, you make a great point, those increased expectations in four years are impressive. It was quite the different feeling watching the A&M game knowing we won the East the previous week. However, one troubling comparison is how just like under Richt, we're not showing up in big games, at least big games that don't involve Auburn. We had what, one down-to-the-wire W against Alabama under Richt? And honestly I think we can thank Pat Dye for motivating Georgia to man up against Alabama in 2002 more than anything Richt did. And we did have a nice blowout of LSU in Athens in 2004, but that was in the regular season, after we got blown out in the SEC championship the previous year by LSU. Georgia just hasn't really shown up for a big game (start to finish) since 1980. If it wasn't for Auburn we'd really be hurting. Under Smart we've definitely achieved a higher level of success and relevance in four short years, but with that come increased expectations to deliver, and thus far he hasn't.
It should be pointed out that it wasn't Richts first four or five years that got him fired. If he had kept that pace he would still be there. But in the context of winning a national championship Kirby ain't the guy. He peaked in 2017 with the best of Richts leftovers and the offense has been going backwards ever since.
Fault? It’s Coley’s for now. If Kirby doesn’t upgrade that position, it will be his going forward.
I was pilloried after the ND game for saying that Fromm was overrated and Coley wasn’t the right guy. I stand by my earlier assessment.
Three of four years under Kirby, the Dawgs have been east winners and in the NC conversation in December. That has become the norm. Under "10 wins are enough" Richt, from the middle of October forward we were forced to watch our east competitors play meaningful games hoping they lose so we could back into tha SECCG. That was the norm. That was also totally acceptable for all but very few of us in Dawg Nation!
Under Smart, not only is 10 wins not enough, it's totally unacceptable! In fact, Kirby, his staff, and the players so many in DN are quick to denigrate have totally changed the expectations to 11, 12, 13, and even 14 wins are not enough! This in just four years!
Compare Kirby to Richt? Who are we kidding? It's like comparing the sun to a candle!
Isn't Coley also the qb coach? If your player isn't doing a basic of their job (throwing accurate passes) then it's up to you to correct their mechanics. Fire him and hire Bobo before he's hired at SC and we are still struggling on offense.
We can make these comparisons with Riicht and Kirby, which doesn't reflect anything except Kirby won his SEC title with the majority of Richt recruits. How about that for comparison? I would not discount the great things Kirby has done but stop trying to compare him to Richt because Richt was a great coach during his tenure at Georgia just like Kirby will too. The bottom line Richt did not bring a championship, but will Kirby. That is the comparison that needs to be made. I hope Georgia give Kirby 15 years like Richt before making judgement.
i detested Mark Richt after the 2012 SEC Championship game, but at least Richt didn't shift the blame game and throw his players under the bus.
Bleacher Report smashing us again this morning....don't disagree with a lot of what is said in the article.
Bottom line: Dawgs can't ever seem to finish the drill. It's always an excuse. Offensive mindset and philosophy needs an overhaul.
" GEORGIA STILL SINGING THE SAME SAD REFRAIN SINCE 1980...
Georgia head coach Kirby Smart has recruited enough star prospects to outfit a championship team, but the Bulldogs are still struggling to get over that hump.
Several times since winning it all in 1980, the Bulldogs have played in games where winning would mean a title or a shot at one. They just can't seem to show up the majority of the time.
There's nothing wrong with getting torched by Burrow; every other Tigers opponent has this year. But the biggest disappointment for Georgia in another strong season has been the James Coley experiment at offensive coordinator. For whatever reason, the offense has taken a giant step back....
Georgia's receiving corps was the team's weakness all season, and it was dealt a blow when senior transfer Lawrence Cager was lost for the year in late November to an ankle injury. Against LSU, freshman Dominick Blaylock went down with a non-contact leg injury that looked bad.
It's not all Coley's fault, but the lack of development on that side of the ball is alarming, especially considering the elite talent at every position and the future NFL players on the offensive line. This is the kind of season that makes head coaches go a different direction at coordinator."
Kirby has a better record against Top 25 teams than Richt in his first 4 years. However, I'm still not convinced CKS can get us all the way to the promised land. Close is only good enough in horseshoes and hand grenades. We've only made it to the playoffs ONCE.
