I'm no Clemson fan, but it's just wrong to say that Smart is "light years" ahead of Swinney at the same point in their career. Swinney won 47 games his first 5 years after inheriting a team that barely won 50% of its games the previous 3 years. Smart should win around 50 after inheriting a team that won 75% of its games the previous 3 years. Smart is an outstanding defensive coach and recruiter, an average game day manager (which should improve with experience) and simply doesn't have a clue about offense. Right now, Dabo is excellent at all three. Clemson benefits from having a strong long term DC (Venebles) - if Smart could do the same thing on offense I believe he will get there. But right now he's sort of a mirror image of Lincoln Riley and if he doesn't figure out the offensive side of the ball he might become Les Miles.
If nothing else, playing in a weak conference actually shows greater coaching ability. In the 5 years leading up to his first National Championship, Dabo's recruiting rankings were 27, 10, 20, 15 and 16....Playing in a school in rural South Carolina....He sure did not have the best talent in the nation.....The same years the Dawgs were 11, 7, 9, 12 and 8......
Dabo took over a program that didn't have a lot going for it and turned it into a perennial NC contender. One could certainly make the argument that he has done more with less than the top programs. 2 National Championships under his belt @ Clemson. Who would have thunk it?
Keeping it on KY...turnovers is a huge factor in this game. If KY can shake the ball loose enough they could be in it....for awhile. UGA too much on defense to allow many pts. Stetson will then have to show us how effective he is now after that week of reparations. No way of knowing??? McKitty thinks Daniels is ready. Isn't that a nail-biter,
And at the same point in their careers, Kirby is light years ahead of Dabo and that is with Kirby in the SEC and Dabo in the All Cupcake Conference! Where would Kirby be if his biggest regular season games were against the likes of NC, Virginia Tech, and Miami?
Just a comment on question #5: It could very well happen in the next five years. Everyone knows that Georgia has the talent. The question is coaching. Is Kirby an elite coach? I believe the question is still out on that. At the present I think there are only two elite coaches in college football, Saban and Dabo
