Oh Yeah, Thanks a lot to the person who fixed that refresh thing, it was driving me nuts. It is fixed, right?
Losing coaches comes with the territory and I love the territory the Dogs occupy nowadays. UGA National Champions. I love typing that, let's do it again. GO DAWGS!
I think Addae felt the pressure of Muschamp over his shoulder. I’m sure he got more help than he wanted at coaching his position and that’s a great problem to have as a Georgia fan.
Couldn't agree more... and I truly hope this is how it plays out. Getting too many leaders in a coaching room (or in any leadership environment), even if they're the very highest quality, can become a burden for a team or other organizations. The primary leader (in this case CKS) ends up having to spend as much time aligning his leadership team as he does actually focusing on all the other Head Coach activities with the team (and prospective recruits). The model that ShoottheHooch suggests would actually address some of these risks in a very productive way, especially given all the personal connections those mentioned also have with UGA.
Fingers crossed it turns out this way!
Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but Tykee Smith has already transferred once in his career. To transfer again, and play right away, he would have to graduate first and I'm not sure he's in the same position to do that as J.T. Daniels, who is in a similar scenario in terms of already having transferred once. Daniels is scheduled to graduate in May, then be ready for fall practice elsewhere. Is Tykee Smith ready to do that, class-credit wise? I just don't know. Really, I'm not sure where these names of possible replacements are coming from? I don't think anyone had our new linebackers coach on the initial short list. I'm sure this is no surprise. I was hearing rumor of Addae leaving all the way back before the NCG, so I'm sure Kirby is well prepared to replace him. Or not. Go Dawgs!
Saban deals with this crazy type of coaching turnover every single year and rarely skip a beat. As long as Georgia remains a top elite program then other coaches working their way up the ladder will want to coach at Georgia, so I'm not worried about the Dawgs. But it always is concerning if key players leave unexpectedly due to their coach leaving....wondering about Tykee Smith with Addae bolting.
All in all, it's just another brick in the wall! (apologies to Pink Floyd). This is all good, and so expected, people are cashing in on the success of the program and with Kirby, Muschamp the DBs are still well coached. It would be bad if no one wanted our coaches - but obviously, they do. The Georgia football program is a well oiled machine and another quality coach will take the place of those that leave. GO DAWGS!
Addae parlayed a nice year into a big raise and an opportunity to go home. Most people would do the same thing. He is/was an excellent recruiter but he was also recruiting to UGA. That makes a world of difference. UGA will be fine. CKS is an excellent judge of coaching talent. For those saying CKS looking over UGA's DC's and DB's coaches shoulders is a problem discount how valuable that is. How much you can learn collaborating with a high quality , more experienced coach. Just the way CKS created value in himself working closely with Saban. Saban STILL is very involved w/DB's at AL. It works.
THe difference sometimes betweeen good and great is attention to the details for DB's. Of course you can't coach speed.
I Like this idea Allot !! 😀 Would be an Awesome coaching trio !! And all three former Dawgs players themselves !! Two of them would be coaching in front of their sons who are now Dawgs. No man wants to be embarrassed in front of his own son !! So effort would go way beyond salary alone !! Go Dawgs !!
He was there for one year and left. To me he didn't want to be there. You think Kirby being a great defensive coordinator at Alabama with great success hasn't been in every defensive coach business since he been at Georgia. You think he hasn't been breathing down Lanning neck since he took of defensive play calling, but at least gave the program more than one year. Don't make excuses for someone who doesn't want to be apart of the program.
I think Tykee was alluding to Addae leaving. Tykee would be ill-advised to leave UGA for Miami.
Spoiler alert-- I posted the following in the previous article before reading this one (but think it fits better here):
Georgia won't be able to recruit/retain a superstar DB position coach, including "one in the making", until/unless Kirby delegates that job to that person and truly empowers them. An elite coach doesn't want, or need, his boss breathing down his neck, telling him what to do, and even inadvertently taking over meetings, huddles, the room, etc. It's as simple as that. Yes, Kirby has tons of DB experience and knowledge to impart; but along with his personality type, that combo would probably get a little old fairly quickly for a fully capable coach. The good news is that Kirby has already learned to delegate and empower other elements of the program that he used to feel compelled to control... so there's reason to think he'll get there with DBs. In the interim, between him, Muschamp, and anyone else they happen to hire for the role, our stable of stud DBs will be just fine. Go Dawgs!
P.S. The possible outside replacements mentioned in this article sound amazing... but hard to imagine them coming/staying. Hope I'm wrong!
What makes the most sense is moving Muschamp to DB coach. I don’t know what the DB coach at UGA does except put players through drills during the week because during games they are invisible. This year, it was always Kirby and to a lesser degree Muschamp exalting the DBs and giving instruction. Thus, the turnover.
It wouldn’t surprise me at all to see Muschamp moved to DB coach/codefensive coordinator and Bobo QB coach and special teams coordinator.
After Kirby's - UGA's success it's easy to see why other schools want to hire away your assistant coaches.
In some ways it's a good thing. We basically traded a DGD - McClendon for someone who quite naturally would likely never be as loyal as a coach who's working for his alma mater. Culture - Fit and really wants to be at UGA. Sounds right.
Yep, no hard feelings on any side. With a program like Georgia who just won a NC primarily because of the Defense, there is no better time to be job searching than right now. Georgia knows this and has near-unlimited financial resources at this point and so if they didn't give him a raise, then they were likely suggesting the same thing to him. Best of luck!
Winning programs have exceptional coaching staff!
Go Dawgs! National Champions! 1942, 1980, 2021
Very well-written article, Connor. Looks great that our players respected Coach Addae but still seem satisfied with what is going on at UGA!
Go Dawgs!
