FYi....when looking at stat comparisons,....or stats in general...it's wise to take coaching, "level of competition" and peer-level talent into consideration. Not trying to tell you how to evaluate...but, Yurosek at AS....isn't gonna be Yurosek at UGA.
Lol...different animal type. For instance....Atlanta drafted a Kyle Pitts type TE....when they could've gotten by with pretty much any of the the top 15 tight ends available in the draft. Including, a Yurosek or FitzpatI...
They are both, more prototypical tight ends, IMO. While....Bowers and Pitts are a hybrid TE/WR that can play anywhere on the offensive line or backfield, excluding tackle-to-tackle IOL.
Well...maybe Bowers could play Guard or Center. But, I'm talking about normal human beings. Not the meta-human.
BTW.…you're partially right about Pope. I believe that Weorner statement was directed toward that kid that reclassified. Or....it could've been Pope.
My comment was apparently delivered or taken wrong. It wasn't meant to compare playing styles. I was referring to the fact that Weorner basically came from nowhere, when he started making plays. Everybody was like...who is this kid? Running kicks back, stealing balls.…just creating havoc on defense.
The point is/was....until you've seen a kid that has been properly coached and developed, play....you can't assume, you know what he's capable of.
AND....IMO....The coaching and mentoring of Pope, prior to his arrival in Athens....is "suspect". Therefore....give him room to grow & excel. Maybe he will....maybe he won't.
There was nothing wrong with you're assessment of "what he was". My focus was on "what he could be". I still don't know. Lol
Lol...i apologize uga d...there's nothing bad, you can say about the Falcons' organization, that I can disagree with. You can take everything I say, you say...and our Dad's said.....and we'd all be right about "what's wrong with the Falcons this year". Going all the way back to the hiring of Norm Van-Brocklin.
Talent hasn't been Atlanta's problem. It was greed and incompetence. Now?...It seems to be incompetence and complacency. Lol....they don't seem to care or understand the "money game".
If you look at CFB stats. Yurosek's career was head and shoulders better than Fitzpatrick's and Woerner's career's……..combined. Their pro stat's are even more anemic. Those 2 TE's exist on the very fringe of the NFL. It would be logical to see Yurosek bump 1 of those guys off a roster in '25.
Your "argument" doesn't hold any water. In fact you made my argument. Again.
The Falcons problems are many but mostly due to poor draft evaluation. Not DEI.
The Falcons signed a vet QB as a bridge to an impressive young QB. NFL teams do this approach routinely. Penix has lots of potential and production as a CFB player who needed some seasoning at the professional level before he was ready to play.
The problem was that the vet QB was old and coming off a serious injury. The Falcons thought he had a couple of seasons left that would allow Penix to develop into a quality starter. The problem was that Cousins did not return to his previous Pro Bowl level form. Now that Cousins is a has been, Penix is it. Where would the Falcons be w/o this/your so called "DEI" hire? They'd be approaching another season without a good option at QB. Penix is the future. The Falcons needed a long term plan for the QB position. They didn't know when they would be drafting as high and getting a guy they liked as well.
The Falcon's were never going to draft Bowers in '24 after taking then, "best CFB TE in history" , Kyle Pitts in '21. That is too much investment at 1 position when you have too many other needs. So again a logical draft move with nothing related to DEI. Now should the Falcons have taken Pitts at #4 in '21? No. But, until we saw Bowers, Pitts was THE monster receiving option at TE. Pitts' problem isn't talent. It is effort. Pro players are more concerned about not getting injured and getting another contract than they about winning or production. Falcon evaluation problem not "DEI" problem.
Better open your eyes and get that chip off your shoulder. Pro players are a commodity. As long as you perform, at a reasonable price, you keep you job. Once you are injured or your production does not match your cost you are gone. Regardless of anything else.
We had the Pope "discussion" when he transferred to UGA. I saw him play at Buford and wondered why UGA would use a scholarship on him. And said so and was reminded by you that "he could be another Scott Woerner". I thought Pope would be a Hope addition and not take up a scholarship. He barely got on the field in 2 yrs at AL. It was pretty clear he was not going to be much help to UGA. Similar to DJackson at the next level.
Rambo was a 6th rd pick. So now DJackson in Cine? Not in the eyes of NFL teams. Are you saying DJackson will be a Day 1 or Day 2 NFL draft choice? I wouldn't bet on it. He may get drafted. Late. Because of UGA and SEC play. It would be extremely surprising to see him ever start and have a long career in the NFL. We'll see.
Might be a nice late round or walk-on for Philly… they know how to leverage Dawgs culture!
I agree, wrt Yurosek. I'm not sure he was as good as Fitzpatrick or Charlie Woerner [that's 4 U Ugadad20, Lol]. We hardly got a look at him.
But.…if he was good enough for Kirby...he too, will find an NFL home....IMO. Chambliss will also be a commodity with value....because of experience and pedigree.
The NFL is the last place you will see "DEI hires"_____Gdad
Lol...apparently, you haven't been keeping up with the Falcons and their recent #1 draft pick. Despite signing a $100 Mil QB...in the same cycle....and, desperately needing, an IDL or LB to develop a pass rush or an immediate impact player on offense, like Brock Bowers....they passed on all available talent, to take a QB that most people doubted, would be drafted higher than the 3rd round. Only one explanation for that.
Bowers or one of the top tier defensive front 7 available in the '24 draft, would've given the Falcons, the boost it needed, to get to the Playoffs. But, that wasn't important. Winning wasn't as important as diversity, equity and inclusion.
I would never compare Weorner's style to Pope's. Maybe, I compared their size or athleticism or background....but, I would never make an on-field comparison between Pope and Woerner...or Jackson, for that matter. Lol...that boat don't float.
Why did you skip Cine or Rambo or any of the others? I don't get you, with that little list. Lol...oh yeah...1st round. Gotcha.
Oh...and, I said that where and if he's drafted isn't important, right now. UGA's NFL Days will tell the tale. Too bad, he doesn't get a shot at the combine. I suspect Kirby is already running interference for him, wirh some of the GM's.
I don't think, he'll be left our of the draft....just, due to his Bulldog pedigree. Lol...he's UGA Registered, pal.
Yeah, it sucks but it's also a double-edged sword. Doing poorly at the Combine (thinking of people like Holyfield) can knock you out of the draft completely. As long as Jackson stays healthy, he should definitely find an NFL home.
Now, for people like Yurosek, it's a different story. Most college football fans (even Georgia fans) would not likely know much about him. He didn't have the breakout year at Georgia and really is no surprise that he isn't invited to the combine. With only 15 receptions last year and 0 rushing attempts, he shouldn't have expectations of being drafted and will have to try and fight his way onto teams. His best stats were Freshman year where he got 42 receptions for 653 yards. Numbers have dropped every year since.
@UGADad20
No, Dan Jackson is no Scott Woerner and I agree, the comparisons are ridiculous. However, you are incorrect (sort of). Dan Jackson was selected as the coaches All-SEC Third Team. It's not first or second team but it is recognition as one of the best in the conference.
There are a bunch of others who are not on that list.
I could see a player like Jackson as a part of special teams and who knows, maybe he punches through but being paid as a part of an NFL roster in any capacity is way better than 98% of college players.
Unfortunately, being a choir boy has no impact on the "draftibility" of a player. The NFL is the last place you will see "DEI hires". Playing in the NFL is 100% merit based.
You obviously haven't followed the NFL in recent years. The NFL is the current king of all sports properties. The NFL makes money faster than if they were printing it in the back room. Why do you think that CFB wants to be NFL Jr? The NFL doesn't need Dan Jackson. The NFL doesn't even want Dan Jackson. The NFL wants guys with buzz and marketability (see Travis Hunter).
Dan Jackson's age works against him in this draft. He will be 25 and is as good as he is going to be. That is a concern for his personal safety considering his poor tackling technique. We all remember his dangerous targeting tackling technique. Being from UGA and approaching the game as a professional will probably open a door to him as a FA. According to Draft Network DJackson concerns include: "Athletic ability, Tackling technique, and pursuit angles". He does not project as a long term, decorated NFL player.
Another Scott Woerner comparison? As I recall you used the same narrative when you compared Jake Pope and Scott Woerner. Scott Woerner was an All American and 2 x All SEC. DJackson was never mentioned for those honors.
Other UGA S's: Richard LeCounte 5th rd pick. Chris Smith 5th rd pick. JR Reed UDFA.
I think Chambliss and Dirty Dan will eventually make an NFL roster. It doesn't seem like Yurosek has the potential, even with his size, to compete for an NFL spot.
Exactly! My kind of player...with my kind of attitude on the field. He won't go away quietly...guaranteed!
Whether he's drafted or not, isn't important, right now. He WILL play...somewhere, this season. The NFL needs all the "Dan Jackson's" it can get. Anybody ever heard of Conrad Dobler or Rocky Blier? Jackson has that gene...with maybe, a little John Riggins mixed in.
Somebody is gonna want this guy before the draft....once they see past the DEI blinders and talk about his instincts, tenacity and ability to seperate a back from the ball....instead of his speed and jumping ability. I'd rather get hit by 3 skinny speedsters, than 1 Dan Jackson. Lol.
They don't call him "Dirty Dan" for nothing. Lol...I used to play with a 5'8" package of TNT, we used to call "Do-Dirty". Didn't use any other name. You knew when he hit you. Much respect for all the "Dirty's" of the world. Lmao
IMO...Dan Jackson is a beast in the secondary. Speed will be a handicap on 3rd downs. But, the way the NFL specializes and platoons everything....not many players get to see the field, on 100% of the downs played. He'd be a helluva Special Teams player, as well.
If I had to compare him to another former UGA Player....It would have to be Scott Woerner ['79, '80, 81?]]. There were similar comments around Scott. But, things were different, then. The NFL was still Old School, when it came to playing the game. Heck...Alabama was still operating the wishbone. Lol
Dan represents everything good in college football, and there isn’t nearly as much of that as there once was. He played for the love of the game and because he wanted to be a Dawg. He will go somewhere, whether that path takes him through the NFL or not.
I read somewhere that Chambliss had aspirations of going into the MMA world. It’d make sense enough, but he had a more productive season than I think most people legitimately thought he was going to have.
I’m going to be pretty disappointed if Jackson gets completely overlooked. The guy is—and has been since we first learned his name with that blocked punt against Arkansas in ‘21—just relentless, and plays smart.
I wasn’t impressed with Yurosek at all this year. There was one play—maybe against Tennessee?—where he obviously just ran the wrong direction, and most of my hopes for him just went up in smoke. I know it’s only one play, but that one was indicative of so many others that the handful of good plays he made couldn’t really make up for them.
Not surprised at all that DJackson, Chambliss or Yurosek were not invited to the combine. Unless Jackson runs a 4.4x at the UGA pro-day I'd be surprised to see him drafted. Somebody might take a flier on him in the 7th or as a FA but he has practice squad written all over him. He will also turn 25 during the '25 football season.
Yurosek has a chance to catch on in the NFL because of his size and skill set. Probably a FA signing after the draft.
Chambliss's best shot may be to convert to blocking fullback or possibly ILB. The problem is that most NFL teams do not use fullbacks. He would also need to be able to catch the ball. Might be a FA signing after the draft. NFL rosters go to 90 after the season. Teams need camp bodies.
Tae Crowder, one of my favorite UGA players, was a last second flip from GA Southern(?) as a 6'3" 230 RB. He switched to LB after a couple of years of development/ riding the bench. He played in 2 NFL games in '23 and none in '24.
These are really good players they know how to work, and they know how to win. Ask the Philadelphia Eagles.
Dan, Chaz and Ben will all make a team, I believe Dan and Chaz will definitely make a roster….Ben really improved his chances becoming a DAWG……got to shine GA Pro Day!
There are two other white DBs in UGA history that were among the best to ever play the position, Jake Scott and Terry Hoage.
These scouts get paid to do their job. Let's just hope they got this one wrong.
process.
“Yes, he was a walk-on, yes he’s a white safety, you can pigeon-hole him all you want,” Nagy told DawgNation
Oh No! I'm devastated. My feelings are hurt. I should sue. If I had a son, and he wanted to play football, and he wanted to be a safety....and...and... he would never be able to reach his potential with such beliefs as this🤪
Nah, kind of funny.
NFL Scouts and GMs get it wrong every draft. We even have some teams (Falcons) who get it wrong every year. Dan will be fine, and will do well.
