Braun seems hacked off at UGA about Pittman leaving. "My comment is void". His reaction gives me the feeling he was leaning toward Florida before Pittman left. I think most guys would express some regret about changing their commitment and appreciation for the opportunity offered by the school. I see Braun as requiring a lot of attention if he had come to UGA. Sometimes things work out for the best even it's not obvious initially.
You commit to a school because of academics. You commit to football or basketball because of the coaches. In that light, decisions like this doesn't surprise me. I don't know about college baseball of other college sports but nothing is more true in football and basketball. Kids were not clamoring for Bama like they are now before Saban got there. True for the Gators before Spurrier and Meyer, True to a large degree since Smart at UGA. These schools have always had talent but not like they've had it under these coaches. In basketball, do you think UK is the reason or Calapari? I totally get Josh Braun with the caveat, why not go to Arkansas then if it's all about Pittman?
Committing to a coach simply does not make sense in this day and time. I understand the attraction but any given coach could leave any given program at any given time (I know I used "given" a bunch of times). If Arkansas had made the decision a week or so later, he would have already signed with us. If this came next year, what then?
I appreciate the lure of being coached by Pittman but we need athletes to commit to play for UGA because they love UGA. Just my opinion on this matter.
Georgia only has 14 commits.........Hopefully Kirby is out there working 20 hours a day to improve recruiting....it could go either way...I would love to see a top QB but I don't think there are any out there...
Just a word on Big Sam.......no doubt...the best out there....but, in reality, just how much better...having the best front four this year didn't seem to do us a lot of good
Sorry to hear the news but understand his decision.
Getting off the OL subject for a minute - who do we have to replace Blankenship?
I'm a bit more worried about his replacement.
I mean, on 1 hand I kind of understand wanting to play for a specific coach. But everyone knows you are committing to a school not a person. Football coaches are constantly getting shuffled around. It seems foolhardy to approach recruiting like that.
Hate to hear Braun has jumped off the "great wall". He would have been a huge asset in years to come at Georgia. I'm sure he is disappointed that Sam left and it may have been that he was already thinking of decommitting before Sam left. I'm not sure if the Dawgnation writer was told he would not be considering Georgia moving forward or that was just the writers opinion "(That said, it is not expected that he will consider Georgia going forward)".
These young men build relationships with these coaches that recruit them and I'm sure Josh feels betrayed to some degree. Hopefully he will have a change of heart and commit to the G, but my gut tells me this had more to do with something else rather than just Pittman leaving. Pittman leaving just gave him an easy out.
I really hate us losing Braun, I see him as our next Cade Mays. Hopefully, he'll be open to Luke and come back to us.
Wonder what he will do when the Mullen to Dallas rumors get cranked up .... agree, you commit to the school first.
Yeah like most have commented already, the writing has been on the wall for him. Could've said he was already gone when visiting florida during notre dame weekend. So if you're playing for a coach, go to Arkansas, otherwise don't even mention it. Just my .02.
Yes, I must have misread. Would still like to get him but, if not I hope he’s ok with loosing in Jax every year.
Its a shame that he won't even give them a chance. Coaches leave all the time. Nothing new.
So far, Tate Ratledge has not followed suit.......He is another Pittman loyalist. Tate and Josh Braun are/were the biggest of the commits to date. Matt Luke needs to get out there and speak with these kids. They need to get to know him if it makes that big a difference. I am pretty sure he can get Braun to rethink.
Agree with most of the comments here. I hope recruiting involves establishing relationships with more than one person - multiple coaches, players. Seems like when coaching changes have occurred in the past, recruits have stuck with UGA because they committed to the team (more than a person). This is the first time I recall that someone was so connected to an individual (other than a head coach). The person that mentioned that believing a great position coach would be there 5 years is unrealistic, is right.
They should also be selling the fact that it's more than the coaches. Playing against 5 star defenders every day in practice should be a huge motivator. That in itself should help you become a great player.
What Braun is saying is he would play for UGA IF Pittman were there but not if he isn't....but would play for FL or SC without Pittman...he does not like UGA...so good bye, I agree! He is a big boy though...6-6 335. And agile. Tough loss.
Ya know....we learned a lot this season. Stars ain’t everything because we got our tails handed to us by. 3 start qb throwing to 3 star wide outs.
Coach em up boys! Let the chips fall where they may. These are still 17-18 Yr old kids, can’t get mad over something like this.
go dawgs
Darn!!! I knew it- Braun and watch...Ratledge will follow. Huge loss if he signs with another SEC and plays against us. I think he blames this on UGA???? Not so...this is ALL on the Pit-Man. Strange young folks, play for the man not the school...and that was not even Coach Smart??? Maybe his dad can get him to rethink after the emotion calms down. If Matt Luke could have a word or two with him.
Seems to me I remember David Pollack was a 3 star, and he turned out pretty good. Maybe his heart was just that big. How many others are out there that are not 4 and 5 stars , but have the heart and grit to excel.
Article states UGA likely won't be a consideration going forward..when a player decommits, it's very rare that they sign with the original school they commited to.
Like Mark Richt used to say, we want players who want to play for Georgia.
See ya...
This does not make sense- more like a seven year denied his candy. Why not Arkansas? Does he realize Pittman left him, not Georgia. Hope his family helps him make the best LONG TERM decision for him. Following coaches can end in career failure.
Yeah, very strange. It's almost like he was looking for an excuse to decommit. His next 2 schools don't involve Pittman. Huh? His parents were quick to say how great a hire Luke was, but Georgia won't even be considered? Not even considered? ****?? I can COMPLETELY understand needing to "back off a pledge" to reconsider all options and need time to meet with Luke and such, but this just sounds like a lot of whiney drama.
Maybe I'm wrong, but the way he stated that his pledge was "null and void" was like he was so hurt by Pittman leaving that he blames Pittman and now is refusing to have anything to do with him. Sounds like a lot of drama we may have avoided.
Y’all need to settle down, it isn’t over, he rethinking things. The one I was most excited about. Go Dawgs
Funny, he wanted to play for Pittman when Pittman was part of a winning team. Pittman moves to arkansas, and his other 2 finalist are SC and UF? With no mention of playing on a cellar dweller with Pittman as HC..
Da*n ! I hope he doesn't go to Florida or South Carolina ! We have to get him to reconsider !
I wish the young man the best of luck. BUT, he must not bleed red and black or he wouldn't have decommited.
If that were true, the coach would be irrelevant. He'd want to excel for UGA, on and off the field, regardless of the who coach is, if he truly wanted to be at UGA.
This feels like having a player transfer before he even got in the program.
I don't think he would have had a shot at cracking the starting lineup his first year and if the coach he liked wasn't going to be there why not go somewhere easier to get playing time?
Bummer!!! Sorry to lose Josh, but I hope he realizes the coaching changes will likely occur no matter where he goes. Good luck young man and go Dawgs!!!
So, Braun and his family were pinning the commitment on the thought Pitt was going to be at UGA for the next five years? That was unrealistic from the get-go! Early enrollee, plans to participate in bowl practices, a five year commitment with a master's in a field UGA obviously excels in. That sounds a lot like a commitment to the school, not a coach.
If he ends up at Arkansas, all of this will make a lot more sense, but there's no indication above that that's a likely outcome.
The way it's framed here, this really doesn't add up. His commitment was specifically to Pittman, but his likely landing spot now is one of two places where Pittman isn't coaching? He was excited enough to be coming to Georgia that he planned on an extended residency, but his position coach is replaced by another who the family obviously respects, and just like that UGA is entirely out of contention?
EST of luck young man but youCommited to a coach, not a school, was never a DAWG at heart.
Sorry to see you go, but you don't commit to playing for a Coach, you commit to playing for a University. Good luck with the Gators.
