NIL is the problem. Too much too soon with unintended consequences. They are buying expensive, fast cars. Where are their parents? I know they are “grown” but a little advice wouldn’t hurt. They are going to show up for their funeral or in court for vehicular homicide.
Kirby obviously isn't doing enough to end this problem. It's disgraceful to UGA and will certainly hurt our recruiting efforts. If we weren't on a 42-game regular season winning streak, Kirby's job would in jeopardy. He needs to double up on the NIL fines and suspension. This has to end and END NOW!
As I mention in my prior post, and whether you/we agree with it or not— except in felony/physical violence cases or repeat offenders of program or school policy— that just doesn't tend to be the Kirby way and Georgia culture. I guess you can make the "love" so tough they'll take themselves out of the program… but I highly doubt Harris gets booted. Go Dawgs!
Hit the road Jack! Incredibly dumb thing to do after all the other incidents. Has he been under a rock somewhere?
He was tagged doing 106 MPH. It doesn't take a genius to know that only bad things can happen at that speed.
I share your sentiment G. But I'm not sure they can legally do that because officially NIL is separate from the university.
Not a great way to bring attention to yourself and the program, especially it having been completely avoidable. That said, it could be a life-changing turning point for Harris, as it has been for others over the years. That's a promise Kirby and his staff make on the recruiting trail… we're not just a football factory, rather a caring family that supports and helps you become better even when things go wrong, be it head trauma or simply not using your head. Go Dawgs!
Just released more details in another article...Harris was going 106mph!!!!
Seriously? No excuse for that, especially considering the deaths on the team due to reckless driving. These incidents keep happening, and it's really hard to understand why.
It sounds like the athletic department needs someone that checks the current state of the players’ license, vehicle registration, and proof of insurance.
Wow. I wonder how many of y'all take high blood pressure medicine after reading these comments.
106 mph inside city limits, Athens not Miami! Really, no way to rationalize this level of stupidity.
I REALLY like the idea of having the SEC take control of punishments for driving-related offenses (as well as sexual assaults and domestic violence). That way, you get a UNIFORM punishment scale for all teams and players, and the coaches no longer have try to "handle it internally." Also, it's my belief that if the league starts handling these issues, that the coaches will somehow miraculously get better control of such matters. Heck, at this point it's worth a try because this is beyond ridiculous, at least at UGA.
Exactly, anyone who defends someone doing 106mph ANYWHERE in Athens is as STU-PID as the driver arrested.. plain and simple.
I knew a teacher who had a funny way of punishing students for **** offenses. He handed them a wide, white belt that they had to wear with their shirt tucked in for whatever amt of time he felt neccessary. Everywhere they went. They hated it and caught abuse from their peers and anyone else who knew about it. I thought it was hilarious. He said it made more of an impact than a belt to the butt.
"You're right, IMO. Based on the overzealous list of ticky tack charges."
Doing 106 mph in the city limits isn't a "ticky tack" offense. It is life threatening for both the driver and any pedestrian who happens to be on the street. You need to grow up as do the idiots committing the "ticky tack" offenses.
Ray Goff, Jim Donnan, and especially Mark Richt all had players get in trouble. It's not just about Kirby Smart players. So let all the Blah, blah, blahs come in and let the Athens Clarke County Police department have their mentions on national sports media, with all do respect though, and let's play some football.
Clarke is the smallest county in GA., and contains 5 law enforcement agencies. ACC Police, ACC Sheriff, UGA police, State Patrol post, and a GBI office. So, chances are you won't drive far in Athens without encountering some kind of law enforcement. So, it's actually S-T-U-P-I-D to even think you can get away with it. You may for a while, but karma will eventually rear its head and bite you. I've seen it happen way too many times not to believe it.
You're right, IMO. Based on the overzealous list of ticky tack charges...I'd say, it's either a rookie Officer or there's a target on UGA Football Players. Now, that the Players are getting paid, it seems the City of Athens, may want to get their slice . Hence the rabid traffic enforcement. But....it's the law...so, how can you complain.
Lol....I'm surprised they don't triple fines for UGA Football Players, in Clark Co. [double for backups and scout team participants]. Keep the revenue coffers full, don'tcha know.
Obviously, the goal is for these young men to learn the value of paying attention to detail and taking care of "The easy stuff", like obeying traffic laws and being on-time. Some teenage heads are harder than others, but they all get it eventually, or die trying.
It doesn't require thought. It requires discipline. Like reflexively buckling your seat belt as soon as you sit down...with the same focus you use when you line up for the next play. Nobody, will ever convince me that "Kirby Smart has a discipline problem" or that traffic violations by UGA Football Players is outside the standard deviation of the national average.
IMO...Somebody at the AJC has a hard-on for UGA Football. And...like some of the other reporting going on around the Country…it ignores truth & reality, to create a narrative. The "narrative"???.......[Kirby Smart and the UGA Bulldogs have a culture problem cause they can't drive.] Lol
Go Dawgs...keep it 'tween the ditches.
It's time to start making the whole team..…EVERYONE to start being punished with stadium steps or ladders after practice on top of individual punishments and let the team self police each other....oh and fire the entire fast and furious department
It’s getting a bit tiresome, isn’t it? The “young and reckless” thing doesn’t even really hold up much, considering the amount of times this has happened with young men on this team. It’s more like “young and refusing to accept reality.”
Time to send a real message, enough of this b s. Suspend him for half of the season and let everyone know the next offense will be suspension for the season. Enough is enough.
All I can do is roll my eyes at this continuing kind of recklessness and behavior…good grief. At some point calling it just being young and *tupid doesn't cut it any longer.
More examples of how ACCPD is the only department in Georgia that routinely arrests people for traffic violations. They've been doing this nonsense ever since I was a student in the early 90's, and they've never changed.
Edit: I mean, seriously. If the bail is freaking $50.00, you know the arrest was nonsense.
The key is a stiff NIL fine…..I'd say to start 10% but the message does not seem to be resonating so maybe 50 t0 100% might just get the warranted attention…..maybe ACCP will also help by suspending his DL for 6 months to a year. Maybe it's time the SEC step in and formulate a punishment as well?????
Billy…enough is enough blaming all of our team for the actions of a few. But hey…they do what they see Dawg.
The whole team DOES NOT DESERVE To Be Thrown Under the Bus by an "alumnus" or anyone else!
Give it a rest. Players have been dismissed. Has that changed anything? No. Your comments make it sound like all 100 or so players are killing staff, players, and driving drunk everyday. Just shut it. You are reacting emotionally over a teenager's driving issues. Let me say again. Its not players getting money that is causing this reckless driving.
The public at large embraces and celebrates driving fast (100 mph on the interstate 70 mph law) and glorifies drinking. But it is also happening when just riding around Athens in broad daylight last weekend before and after the game. I was passed, cut off by drivers going 20 miles per hour over the limit. And being followed so close at high speeds to the point I could not see their front end. I actually had to pull over so that I could get them off my arse. Now, we can drink in the stadium at will. There were more beer selections for sale in my section than soft drinks. Encouraging drinking.
So spare us the sanctimonious diatribe. Not saying the players aren't getting the message but at the same time those criticizing them like you are Hypocrites. It is a culture problem in the US that is happening on interstates, local roads, small state roads, etc. People are constantly writing letters to editors in newspapers disgusted with the aggressive, dangerous driving by SOBER folks. Start with the adults giving a better example for the youth and our team. Otherwise, your opinion doesn't mean squat.
Dismiss this man from the program now and not tomorrow. For the love of God Kirby do something about this insanity of your programs players that are infatuated with their new found money of gold with driving cars to fast, drunk and killing players, staff and then writing millions of dollars worth of money to victims families.
This has got to stop, it's utterly embarrassing, unacceptable, deadly and I say this as a proud UGA alumnus…enough is enough.
