Is the new Joker movie really all that?
This new Joker movie is getting a lot of critical praise and breaking records. I am not a fan of comic book movies at all, but I am curious about this one. What are your thoughts if you have seen it?
Comments
If you're a fan of the DCU/MCU movies, then this may not be the Joker movie you're expecting.
If you're a fan of character-driven performances and actors who completely immerse themselves into a role even if the plot/flow of the movie is inconsistent at times, then I strongly recommend. Much more of a Taxi Driver vibe than anything else. Joaquin Phoenix definitely went all in.
The movie's set in Gotham City and there are references to characters/events Batman fans are familiar with, but that's the extent of any superhero references (not a single mention of a bat in the entire movie).
Heath Ledger was my gold standard in terms of actors who took on this role previously (sorry Caesar Romero), but I think this performance tops that.
All the 18-20 years old I work with love it. Think i'm gonna wait to watch at home
lol - good point.
For the record, I'm 50.
i'm the old man on the ops floor at 33. Ancient dinosaur compared to the kids I work with who were born in 2000.
Great film. Saw it twice in theaters. I’d go see it again if it didn’t cost an arm and a leg. Super dark and intense and so much more real than any other MCU/DCU movie. The acting and writing is some of the best I’ve ever seen. Leaves you thinking when you leave.
I enjoyed it, 48 years old. It is more a story about someone moving deeper into insanity than a comic book movie.
I'm not a huge comic book movie fan. On the DC side I really did enjoy Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight. The Avengers End Game truly was fantastic.
It's basically a character study on *insanity. **Taxi Driver is a good comparison in terms of the mood, look, feel. The film is very well made and Phoenix's performance is extraordinary.
Only problem I had was the handful of people laughing in the theatre. Either they didn't understand what they were watching, or else the number of insane people living and walking among us is cause for alarm!

Those folks are the biggest reason I carry a weapon. The criminally insane are a cause for concern.
You talking about Florida fans?
Great movie, saw it twice. Not really a comic book movie at all. Convinced my wife to go see it after explaining it’s not really a “batman” or superhero movie. She enjoyed it too. Not a happy film though, it’s pretty depressing, but worth it.
Nah, all ya need to hold them off is a pot holder.
Some people laugh when they're uncomfortable.
Thanks for the feedback. I think I'll go see it. Like I said I am not a superhero movie guy. Didn't even like Dark Knight. I. Just think it's a dumb genre of movie as a whole. Anyway, I like the Taxi Driver comparison. I love those kinds of movies. Plus Phoenix is a fantastic actor....loved him in Gladiator.
It's pretty dang good if you like psychological trillers or dramas. It's more drama than triller imo. I will say that the previews looked dumb. The movie was amazing. The sound editing and acting was superb.
Were they laughing at the midget being too short to reach the doorknob?
