WATCH Kirby Smart explains why Georgia offense 'built very differently' than LSU
Georgia coach Kirby Smart wants to win games as much as anyone, and that means tailoring his strategy to the personnel the Bulldogs have available
Comments
GATA, let's go
I'm sticking by what I said after the SC game....To prove his worth this year, Kirby has to, at least, win the SEC...To do otherwise shows Kirby is a good coach...but not a great coach...a great coach could win this game
Lots of doom and gloom. Decades of almost will do that to you. As far as I'm concerned, the past is the past. All you can control is what you do today. More than willing to ride it out as long as it lasts! Go Dawgs!
Not rolling with Kirby on this one. I just read an ESPN article earlier today in which Ed Orgeron said outright that he knew he had to change his offensive philosophy and he went out and hired Joe Brady. And remember, Orgeron didn't "inherit" Joe Burrow, he went out and recruited the kid when he decided to leave Ohio State. And yeah, Alabama's receivers all grew up there at the same time, but Saban didn't recruit all of those guys, plus Tua, just to have a run-first mentality. He changed philosophies, then went out and found players who could execute in that offense. That's the reason Hurts left-- Tua was better suited to run the spread offense that Saban decided would be the Tide's primary offense. So Hurts went somewhere where he could prove he could do it, too.
I'm afraid if CKS wants to keep UGA on top and in the running for national championships, he's going to have to change his offensive philosophy, too. It's just the way football is played these days. Whenever anyone suggests UGA should open up their offense, Kirby is fond of saying, "you've got to be able to run the ball in the SEC." I agree, but the two are not mutually exclusive. LSU's RB had more yards (and receptions) than Swift. Both Etienne at Clemson and Dobbins at Ohio State are great running backs that will both make it to the NFL. Yet their offenses air it out with regularity. And even at Alabama, they have Najee Harris, plus a host of other running backs behind him. So this narrative that Kirby keeps pushing that Georgia can't throw the ball more often because we have to establish the run, is just not true. We can do both and if he'll go out and find a smart, imaginative offensive coordinator (plus another great dual-threat QB) who can run a more wide-open offense, I believe UGA will remain right at the top of the heap for years to come. Go Dawgs!
All of yall know deep down that CKS made a major mistake in letting Justin Fields go and even worse he has to remain loyal to Jake Fromm for another year. Then he has to recruit another ideal dual threat QB not named Carson Beck and get him up to speed, that is 3-4 years before UGA will even be in contention for a natty. Kirby is looking a lot like Richt 2.5
I watch the dawgs win a NC using the toss sweep philosophe but I've never seen a team win a NC with Kirby's so-call run up the middle philosophe. If LSU win the nc this season, that would give them 3 national championships with 3 different head coaches since we won ours in 1980 (39 years ago).
I think ZW should be the #2 rb on this team. The kid is strong, he has break away speed and he can take it to the house on any giving play. Is his doctor limiting his carries?
Players win games, according to the plays the coaches call. Never seen a coach run or pass for a 1st down..
White has not shown me a lot this year....certainly not to be #2 back...Herrien is ahead of him and Cook is really coming on. I think Cook will get the majority of carries on saturday
Wow, I assume you have put your resume out for all the Power 5 vacancies. Sounds like you know how to win a natty so go show your stuff.
A. In this piece, Smart isn't talking about changing things up over a year, he's talking about not changing them up between one week and the next.
B. Clemson and Ohio State are not SEC teams.
C. Things being "just the way football is played these days" counts for exactly 0. Plenty of teams out there playing "the way football is played these days" who are 1) not going to their division championships for the third time 2) not in the top 10, 3) not knocking down other ranked opponents with any consistency.
"think ZW should be the #2 rb on this team. The kid is strong, he has break away speed and he can take it to the house on any giving play. Is his doctor limiting his carries? "
Maybe ZW will show out next season, he does run hard straight ahead, but I was thinking about this the other day, I haven't seen him cut, or juke, or change directions and that might just be subconsciously not trusting his knee. Chubb ran hard when he first came back but even he said, he was subconsciously being protective. It was not til the next year that he ran with abandonment.
To get to the open field you almost have to be able to make a tackler miss.
Cook is the one with "Happy Feet" right now. Herrien is still #2..then Cook, I suppose. #1 Swift will give it his all...always does but will favor the shoulder...if he plays. Zeus is a powerful back but is an enigma.....not showing up on Smart's run screen. Coley needs to take to the air against LSU. OPen'em up make'em honest. Has to. LSU is one of the most versatile teams in the country. They will stuff the box if you try those insipid running plays off tackle. Wide right, wide left, at least that. Even then Swift is the only one that can out run the DBs and ends. So..air a few 7-10 yarders! Then let one rip down the sideline...to Blaylock. Just musing. Fromm can perform those basics. I did not mention Pickens ...he will be later in the game. What a screw up he is. Just a kid. This will cost UGA.....IMO. UGA will need every pt they can muster. UGa will prevail....OL will come through and deliver. DL will pin down Barrow...hopefully resulting in sacks!! That would startle Orgeron. He is not used to being shoved around. RIP IT!! GO DAWGS!!!
Florida went right after them with a lot of passes and with success.
