With Richard LeCounte returning, Kirby Smart might have his best Georgia football secondary yet
Welcome to Good Day, UGA, your one-stop shop for Georgia football news and takes. Check us out every weekday morning for everything you need to know about Georgia football, recruiting, basketball and more. Richard LeCounte's return should give Georgia football a great secondary in 2020 The defensive backfield has

Georgia had the best defense in the SEC this year. The secondary, as well as the overall defense has a chance to be even better in 2020.
With healthy receivers returning, along with the freshman receivers and tight ends coming from the 2020 class, the offense has a real chance to improve. It's going to be an interesting year.
The D is strong..no doubt...that said we need someone on the O to step up....I still wish we had a 5 star dual
still waiting on the undisclosed reasons for persons not playing in the Sugar Bowl
no one runs on us, now we stop the passing attack by the best secondary, and it's time to unleash the hounds up front, the final piece of the defensive puzzle, get to the QB
We "may" have our best secondary yet. Potentially. But one could argue that you don't have a better secondary by loosing a second or 3rd round draft pick in JR Reed unless you can replace him with someone of the same or better ability. LeCounte fills JR's place and you could call that a wash, but then you need someone to fill LeCounte's place and do as well as he did. If Stokes goes pro then you have to fill his shoes with someone as good or better then he was. Pretty big shoes to fill. So, while there is room for joy that we have some very talented replacements and incoming recruits, everyone will have to take a big leap forward not to miss JR and Eric.
For God's sake, please don't go anointing this defense as the "greatest" anything until they have at least played 2-3 games in the SEC. All we need is for them to keep reading all summer about how great they, for them think they can just show up and be great. Wasn't it last year when everyone was talking about how great our offensive line was going to be and how did that work out??? I know that DawgNation makes it its business to hype up the Bulldogs but please, please, please - make them actually deliver the goods before proclaiming them "the greatest" anything. This isn't professional boxing. The only thing that counts is what happens on Saturdays between the white lines. The Dawgs should be great, but if DawgNation keeps feeding them rat poison, it will undermine our efforts and lead to disappointment again. Selah.
It's fair to note that the defense gave up 16 passing touchdowns this past season (didn't realize it was that many). But it also must be noted that the same defense gave up only two (2) rushing touchdowns all season, the second one coming in the Sugar Bowl. so I guess you gain on one but maybe lose a little on the other. I think some of those passing touchdowns came about because teams couldn't run the ball in against us.
Barring significant injuries--hype or no hype--I see this secondary as the best the Dawgs have had since early 80's.
If LeCounte gets hurt....? If any running back gets hurt...? Get my drift? You are as good as the team you field. Backups mean a lot! They must be ready to step up. Depth. UGA showed it has depth with 12 regulars missing in the Sugar. Baylor was good but not as good as the hype. UGA totally out hustled and plain outplayed them. Now, many backups are starters...so in come the recruits in their learner roles, some starter roles...the cycle continues. Returnees mean everything....try and keep them. Thank you, Richard LeCounte....you are a true team leader.
