Let the competition between the QB's decide who starts. The only one with experience is Newman, but that was in the weak ACC.

Experience is a plus, but I think that immortality that 18-year-olds often feel also can be a plus. After seeing Jake, Tua, and Trevor Lawrence all excel as freshmen, it wouldn't worry me at all if Beck won the job -- and I'm also not sleeping on Mathis. I would feel a little bad for Newman if that happened, as he obviously came with the intention of winning the job and he seems like a class act. No matter what happens, though, this spring will make all involved better QBs.

I know that experience is vital, especially to the QB position. That being a given, it seems to me that going against the (arguably) best defense in college football in each practice is a great way to get experience. I know that Saturdays in front of 90,000 plus is different and I guess how one handles that difference will produce our 2020 starter. I'm very pleased we have Newman but he is not used to playing before a crowd anywhere close to that large. If he played at Clemson, that has given him a taste of big time football. Whoever wins out should give us an exceptional player at QB in 2020. GO DAWGS!!!!

Baring injury, Newman will be, not might be, the starting QB for at least the first three games. If he tanks against Bama, Beck or Mathis will be given the opportunity.

You have a HS kid who didn't have as good a senior year as he did his junior year because he lost some really good receivers. Sound familiar? Then you have a college starter who had some very good receivers to help him out. He had pretty good numbers. His ability to run when things broke down showed him to be a threat with his legs. His toughness, according to his film is unquestionable.

Bennett is talented for his size, but he's still undersized, and doesn't have Div 1 experience other than mop-up duty. He would really have to be head and shoulders(figuratively speaking ) above the competition to become the starter. All things equal or nearly equal I choose the bigger guy.

Mathis didn't even practice, much less play any last season. To go from that place to the starter, while not totally impossible , would be near miracle status.

All things being equal(ability to throw the ball), the experience, maturity and physicality of Newman gives him a leg up. Doesn't mean someone else can't emerge, but they have their work cutout for them.

My bet is that Newman gets lead role with Beck worked in to "shake things up". I'd then expect Mathis to transfer as Beck takes lead and Smart recruits a high talent QB for the 2021 class... oh wait, nevermind, we have the #1 QB committed in 2021. LOL.

Mathis should have the edge in having spent a year absorbing the playbook and such, but if he hasn't been able to practice, then coming in as a Top 5 SEC program and playing Bama early means that there is little room for error or growth.

Here is what I would like to happen, the QB that gives us the best chance to win and who earns it in Spring will get the job. I love the touch Newman puts on his deep balls in his highlight film but if you get pass the highlight film and see those 11 interceptions he threw last year, some were down right poor decisions so I hope he is coached up from that. I like his abilities in the read option. He poses something Jake did not but in fairness to Jake on his senior season, I think we were just one play way, with a Fromm injury from being decimated so I can see why, if he was encouraged not to. he did not pose any threat doing so anyway. If Newman can secure the ball better and if he fits Monkens offense well then my money is on him to win because of the college game experience. However, against Clemson and 2 or 3 of those other ACC somewhat legit defense he didn’t do so well.

I have no clue how Beck will perform but he does have the tools. Mathis looked good to me last year in the G day game but basically lost a whole years worth of quality experience. At least he did get some practices in although no contact and with a different style offense.

A 3 sport athlete! That's awesome. I hope that Beck and Mathis both get to show us what they can do this year. Both guys have a lot to prove and a great opportunity this year.
