A franchisee is an independent business owner who is "renting" the name, menu, and property from the parent company. They also receive advertising benefits of name recognition. Everything else is up to the operator. From my understanding, there is no financial safety net for franchisees, other than what they have created, themselves. So, if a local guy is a Zaxby's franchisee with a store in Athens, that counts as a local eatery. The name of the business does not play into it.

    Hi Bill,

Love your columns as you represent the fans well. But in this one, you had me in such despair in the first part of the article about "not Playing, "postponing", "playing without fans", etc. that by the time I got to the football part of your article, I didn't even care anymore and stopped reading. Just my opinion, but if this country (including universities & college athletics) isn't operating at pretty close to normal, by August, (September at least) we have bigger problems! Trump is right - the U.S., including college football - needs to get back to work. And the President has such an all star team around him moving mountains that I really think we will beat this thing soon. I wasn't there, but did Americans stop everything else during WWII or even during the Spanish Flu pandemic in 1918-19? Thanks & Go Dawgs! Max

To Popeyethesailor: As I said above, I realize that some of the chain outlets mentioned in the post may be franchises held by Georgians. Still, as part of a chain, they already have resources that many truly local spots don’t have, including the television advertising to which you allude, and that's truly an advantage over local businesses. No matter who owns the Athens stores, I don't know many people who consider McDonald's a local business. If the UGAA had promoted a mix of chain and local outlets, it wouldn't have been as bad. But pushing just chain outlets is a bad look for them.
