Dawgs fans’ optimism is running high, despite question marks
It’s that time of year for bold predictions from Bulldog Nation

I feel good about next year. Only real questions are at O-line, and in the Secondary.
Daniels should only get better. Same for the young Receivers, which should provide a great Offense. Kirby always fields a good Defense.
All the stars aligned for Cousin Eddie in 2020, but that won't happen again next season. Georgia will be back to being the Beast form the East.
It really does look like Kirby will get another shot at Saban.
Probably 12-2 with a loss to Alabama and one more (maybe Clemson or bowl game). Miss the playoff (again). Finish in the top 8 (again).
I think in order to win it all you’ve got to have a lot of luck. No body makes it riding the injury bug. Also, when you’re peaking, other programs have to be down. Let’s see how spring ball goes and keep the injury bug away then we will see what we have.
like the rest of y’all I’m optimistic. I just wanna see what the team looks like when it takes the field and who eventually suits up.
Cant have games where we cant rush for a hundred yards. Not that I want to be a predominantly running team. We were lucky to win 2 games where we could do squat running it. O-Line performance just not expectable.
A couple, or 3 years ago most people felt like were on par with BAMA. No where near them presently. A Natty takes a tremendous team effort. You may can get by with a B+ O-Line but you aren't winning it with anything less.
What I hope Kirby learned from Fromm/Fields is that when a QB EARNS the starters position, don’t disrupt the offense by giving the second stringer entitlement snaps in order to placate the QB who has EARNED holding the clipboard! Football is about competition where there are winners and losers. Fields never won the starters job at UGA. He transferred and was given the starters job leading to Burrows to transfer out where Joe lead his team to an undefeated natty season and the Heisman. If Fields leads the Bucknuts to within a play of a natty against Bama, then he can claim to have had similar success as Jake at UGA.
since we're talking about next year, i think it's time to put next season's schedule on the DN home page.
Yep, this is the first time in a long time that we have a guy with both a cannon for an arm as well as accuracy.
Eason had the arm, but really didn't impress in either Freshman year nor in the G Day game for Sophmore and his final NFL Draft position kinda shows that. I think you'd have to go back to Stafford to get that type of talent... and honestly, he has proven to be a far better NFL QB vs college QB. Don't forget that Freshman year he had 13 INTs to 7 TDs and even by Junior year wasn't super impressive #s.
" But I also hope Kirby has learned a lesson from losing Justin Fields and will play the young quarterbacks when possible, and particularly if JT struggles. "
If I'm Smart and smart (LOL) then I would probably consider the selfish approach here. You KNOW that Daniels will go to the NFL after this year no matter what, so I'd be putting in Vandagriff as much as reasonably possible. If he fails, then that should be a good reminder of why he needs more time and stay another year.
Of course, right now, Daniels only weakness seems to be when the O-line doesn't protect him well enough and learning to throw it away when appropriate. If he can be protected and have some good WRs, he should rack up some serious numbers.
So. whomever the best 2nd stringer happens to be at QB behind Daniels we don't allow him to get any meaningful reps in a game because he has "earned holding the clip board?" Sounds like punishment.
So, if JT were to get hurt or we needed a spark to gain back the momentum (as BAMA did against us 2 years in a row). We are going to insert either no one or someone who perhaps hasn't taken a meaningful snap all year?
That sounds like a winner. Never thought of it that way.
@ShoottheHooch , your timeline is wrong. Burrows was already at LSU, remember. We lost to them in the regular season with Burrow as the QB and Fromm was embarrassed that game. Chaney and Kirby never gave Fields a chance to play in that game. Burrows won the Heisman the following season...
Optimistic is the only way to fly for next season!
" Also, I like the mindset already being established by Daniels, Davis and other team leaders that the Dawgs have “unfinished business” to take care of. After a bit of backsliding the past couple of years, it’s time for Smart’s program to live up to the promise we saw in 2017." Amen.
" But I also hope Kirby has learned a lesson from losing Justin Fields and will play the young quarterbacks when possible, and particularly if JT struggles. The offensive line is a question — isn’t it always. But, I love that Jordan Davis is coming back. That is epic!”
I agree with a lot of these quotes Bill. Spring practice will be hugely important, but we have the makings of a high powered offense and a somewhat revamped but good solid defense. There is ABSOLUTELY no reason to believe we will not cruise to the SEC East Title and on the the SEC Championship against Bama. Coaching, development, and execution are the keys. Kirby will simply have no excuses for me in not making the playoffs, because even IF we lose to Clemson but beat Bama in the SEC title game then we are IN the playoffs. And honestly, I don't see why we can't beat Clemson on September 4th with all the key players they are losing after this season. It will be a true test for our Dawgs.
Bill, every year brings question marks but teams like Bama seem to just reload and do it all over again. That is no excuse with the kind of talent that Smart is recruiting year after year. Kirby needs to figure out the secret formula of success and earn his paycheck in Year 6.
Thanks for that MontanaDawg
That's what I've been preaching, stop with the excuses. BAMA loses 1st round players every year. They shift their coaching staff around moreso than other schools and they reload and show up at the Playoffs every year, practically. It's what they do. Except when there is an outlier like LSU last season.
That's where we should be based on our top recruiting classes. I will say this. For whatever reason(better judge of 4 and 5 star talent in the players they recruit or what). They never seem to ever be deficient in a particular area. Maybe this year they aren't as stout on the D-Line as per usual, or their DB's. But you can rarely poke holes in one particular area.
