Grading the 2020 Georgia Bulldogs' season of highs and lows
Georgia football finished No. 7 in the nation with some big wins, but also, some disappointing defeats, leading to a difficult chore grading the season

i don't know if i'd give the DBs that high of a grade. in the bama game the safety, i think it was Cine, took a bad angle on the first TD pass to Mechie (50 yds). Then Campbell was tripped up by the turf monster on the long TD to Waddle (90 yds). And finally, there was the PI on Stokes in the end zone, though i think the refs completely blew that call (FG vs TD). Can't say how the actual outcome might have changed if they had made the plays, but they did directly result in nearly 140 passing yards (fattened the stats) and18 bama points. How much did we lose by - 17?
Well, the good news is, 3.7% of UGA fans are capable of being honest with themselves.
Mike, I disagree with your assessment as I believe most fans would also. Our O-line blocking in the run game was our biggest weakness. Followed by pass coverage. Did they keep the QB's upright? By-in-large yes, but how do you throw for 400 yards and you can only rush for 8? How does a Tulsa team run on Cincinnati and we can't? How many times did our RB'S get hit behind the line of scrimmage compare to say a FLA or an ALA? That would be eye opening I'm sure.
We may not have a Najee or an Entiene, who does? But we have better than average backs who given a crease can get into the next level but so many times guys had to eek out a 2-3 yard run on their own. It won't show in the stats but how many times did say Kenny get trapped in the backfield and only by sheer determination with some shake and bake did he turn it into anything positive instead of a loss? Virtually, every game.
To give the RB's lower grades than the O-line is laughable. How many times did we crush the run game of the other team to see them march down the field throwing 8-10 yard passes with receivers wide open? Virtually every game. We made teams one dimensional and they still passed it on us. WEe played soft zones for crying out loud.
FLA had 300 yards passing before the half and so did BAMA if I remember correctly. We had a freshman QB or two rip our DB's to shreds. We won the games but it was way more interesting than should of been.
No way I'd give anything more than a C+ to our entire 'elite' secondary. In the games - Bama and Gators- that meant the most we were pretty well torched. We had some good plays but also plenty of blown coverages and out executed (can you say 'wheel route' one more time). You can't play like that against the elite teams and expect to win. We've got some holes to fill there next season, but we've got the talent to do it. Kirby needs to develop those guys into better players. That's part of his job. Other than maybe Clemson there definitely won't be any elite passing threat on our schedule before the SEC Championship game and playoffs. Plenty of time to hone skills and develop playmakers.
My understanding with the wheel route issue is that it was a breakdown between the LBs and DBs as to who was supposed to take it. It's a problem that needs to be addressed, for sure. But I don't know about putting it all on the secondary.
You are probably right. But, call it LBs, CBs, or safeties which I'll just put under 'pass coverage group' and they have to figure it out. We got burned 3-4 times if not more on the same route. That can't happen again. Let's just say the pass coverage should have been better with the talent that was back there overall. Maybe we give the LBs and secondary a C+ then. Gotta have communication and leadership back there.
Losing to Florida was inexcusable. That's it in a nutshell.
To me the single most disappointing event this past season was Jamie Newman betraying the team. I wasn’t even slightly surprised with the outcome (10-2) after he quit to “prepare for the NFL draft”.....What a joke!!! Bottom line is he was upset with Kirby bringing in JT Daniels......and it’s obvious to fans and hopefully NFL scouts that he can’t handle competition. Go Dawgs!!!
How can the O Line receive a B- and the RB's a C+? If the OLine blocks the RB's would have had more yards. They all averaged over 5 yds a carry but that is deceiving because they had to get the ball and make their own holes. Most yards came after contact which is credit to the RB's. The O Line did a better job of pass protection than run blocking for sure... I think everyone's expectation changed once Newman pulled out; however it was revived when JT started to play. It was definitely a tale of two seasons...
Go Dawgs!!
In 1980 I was 32 years young, now this fall I will be 73 years old. Please Dear Lord would you grant this UGA fan one more chance to see Georgia win it all. Expectations are out of this world, it would be very nice to not be told once again, just wait until next year. GO DAWGS!
Very generous, too generous. For the year: OL = C, QB C, RB C, Receivers B, DL B, LB B, Secondary C, overall C or C+ The way the Media has portrayed recruiting over the past several years and preseason hype you would expect the next man up to be very talented as well. UGA should be deep in talent. Look at Bama. When someone gets injured or they substitute, the next guy is as good as the first or almost that good. If UGA does not get better at developing the talent it has it will continue to be a wannabe.
How do you replace a Najee and the next guy looks almost as good? You have a great O-Line. Single most important consideration. Najee wouldn't be Najee with our O-Line blocking for him. Still more talented, but not BAMAesque.
We won't have a 1st round RB on next year's team. Good talent, not 1st round material. BAMA will whenever the next RB is eligible. They just reload. They will have more O-Linemen go 1st round in 2022 if they have someone that's eligible. They just reload.
BAMA either has someone researching the talent pool of HS players that's just better at discerning between 4 and 5 stars out there than anyone else or they simply coach them up and develop them better. Maybe a combination of both.
We get the same stars just not the same talent it would seem.
All I've heard since Kirby came to Georgia is about these high recruiting classes. That's total BS, with the possible exception of Pickens AFTER Waddles got hurt, there isn't a single Georgia starter who could've beaten out an Alabama player. Kirby may recruit good players, but he can't develop them. The NFL Draft shows that....Georgia players aren't drafted even close to what Alabama, Clemson, Notre Dame and Ohio players are drafted. Not only that, but these high recruiting grades are almost exclusively defensive players. We don't have a single Running Back who would be drafted above the 5th Round...if that. White came back because he knew he'd join Holyfield and Herrien on the practice squads IF he could make that. Kirby is an outstanding Assistant Coach. He'll never beat Saben.
