Kirby likes to be cute
BA…Burks, the WR at Arkansas, is already a star. He is projected as a 1st round pick, he can’t really be a break out if he already broke out last year!
Hey BA - regarding your post game show, I have a couple of comments.
First, I don't know who the hosts were on 680 The Fan on Saturday morning, but I was listening about 8:45 on my way to ALTA. They were pushing this narrative that Beck was going to be disrespected if he didn't get the start. According to them, Beck should put his name in the transfer portal on Monday morning if Stetson started over him. What made matters worse was GA's own Buck Belue, phoned in from a breakfast with the 1980 Championship team that was having a reunion. He said that he was amazed that Bennett would be starting and wondered what Kirby was doing. So I attribute the genesis of all the online vitriol about the QB situation to the know-nothings at 680 The Fan. I was disappointed at Buck for not being more of a voice of reason.
I was so mad listening to them spout off with all this nonsense, suggesting that Bennett would get booed when he was announced (which is what happened of course). Anyone with any knowledge of the program should have expected Kirby to start the more experienced QB, who is a 5th year senior and former starter, over a player with barely one years worth experience and no starts. He consistently favors more experience when deciding what players to start, all over the field.
Second, Kirby has been telling us all along what he has been doing with Carson as QB2. He said the other day that Stetson had a "bank of reps" and was largely taking "mental reps" while Beck was taking all of the #2 snaps at practice. This is obviously in an effort to get him more experience for the future. This does not necessarily mean that Beck is the second best QB on the team or is ready to start for the Dawgs should Daniel not be able to play. If the injury to JT lingers (and please Lord, don't let that happen) then likely Stetson will be the #1 and Beck will still be #2. That said, a healthy Daniel is QB1 and we need him back on the field next week.
But can we at least be thankful that we have Stetson to fall back on? Just like you said about TAM when they lost their QB and their offense stalled, "I guess they didn't have a Stetson Bennett". Go Dawgs!
It is interesting to consider how these rumors kept UAB spinning in game prep and whether UGA acted intentionally. Beck has no game tape; Bennett has a lot. Therefore, it would make sense for UGA to want UAB to think Beck would be the starter. UGA succeeded in creating this perception through leaks and a misleading statement by Kirby, Beck being QB2. While not entirely false, this statement is meant to lead one to the conclusion that Beck would start. Did Kirby’s emotionally salient experience against Bama QBs he had not prepared for lead him to learn how to strategically use disinformation? Unlikely, strategic disinformation is an extremely sophisticated form of information warfare. Very few nations or organizations are capable of this level of influence operations. More likely, Kirby was happy to let false speculations stand , but did not plan the leaks or intend to mislead with QB2 quote, though he didn’t go out of his way to correct misperceptions.
BA... make sure to keep your money out of Vegas. Went back and listened to your picks, and it was not pretty. 2-5 is going to leave you broke in a hurry.
