Dawgs keep rolling, but still have room for improvement
A quarter way through the regular season, Kirby Smart’s Dawgs have reached the point where it’s not so much a matter of did they win, or did they take care of business, as it is a question of whether they lived up to expectations as the No. 2 team in the country.

Good review and analysis, Bill. I agree also with the outlook down the road....Florida and Bama. Florida's Mullen gave Bama a different look offensively and nearly got them a win. UGA will have their hands full. You called it concern. That at least. However, by then, UGA will have vastly improved its offense, so there is strong hope as the UGA defense should contain Florida's very good QB. Thanks again for great reporting.
As if Georgia needs any more motivation going into the Florida game, Jones's assertion that the Gators will "definitely" see Alabama again should only add to it. If the Dawgs take care of business and play the way they're capable of, that will not happen. Not that Alabama's return to Atlanta is a definite either.
Bill, this is the best article I've read on the South Carolina game. Not a surprise as you usually get it right.
The only addition I'd make is to comment on how well we did against the South Carolina defensive line. According to everything I've read and saw their D-line is supposed to be the strong point of their team. Our imperfect offense did right well against that strong defensive line.
South Carolina looks like a better team than the scoreboard indicated meaning two things. They're coming along under Kirby's former assistant, and we are a pretty good team albeit with need for improvement.
Go, Dawgs!
Nice analysis Bill and pretty spot on!
I'm not too worried about our rushing attack at this point. We still gained around 180 yards on the ground yesterday and 303 through the air. A good mix if you ask me. Does the OL need to play better? Yes. Our defensive front 7 look awesome! Does our secondary need some improvements? Yes, but again, I'm not worried about that. I thought the OL and the secondary both played pretty well. But, they need to get better and we need to be aggressive on defense without incurring costly penalties!!
October looks to be a tougher month than we initially anticipated about a month ago. Arkansas, Auburn, and Florida all look better than advertised. The good news is that we should have back at least a couple more key players from injury into the lineup. And we also will have more games and experience under our belt. But so will those teams.
When I look at the AP Top 5, I see the Dawgs as being the best team in the bunch. Seriously. Bama, Clemson, Oklahoma, and Ohio State ALL looked suspect yesterday in their victories. They all have weaknesses that teams are exploiting. If the Dawgs continue to improve and get injured key players back on the field, this could set us up for the best chance in Kirby's 6 year tenure as head coach to make a run at a Natty.
Just sayin...GO DAWGS!!
I have faith that all facets of the game are improving every week with the exception of the O-line run blocking. It's an absolute mystery to me that you can have all that talent, do a good job at pass blocking and look mostly clueless when run blocking. It's like like they're all on a different page, no cohesiveness at all.
I think some are failing to take SC's D-line into account. Many reported it to be one of the best D-lines in the SEC.
I'm not saying there isn't room for run blocking improvement, I just think we did see some improvement in this game.
I think Kendall Milton had his best showing so far this year. He was running harder and finishing runs better.
Anyone that has a blocking scheme where five can block eight I am sure Kirby will listen and probably find a spot for you on staff as an analyst. Yes, there were instances that Chubb, Michel, and Swift made Herculean efforts to break long runs once they got into the secondary. But, more times than not, long runs were the result of WRs and/or TEs throwing key blocks. Our young receivers are improving each game, but they are still a year away from fully growing into their college athlete bodies to be a force blocking in the run game. Plus, it is taking their full concentration as route runners. UGA’s reputation as RBU precedes it. Every opponent comes into the game with stopping the run as job one which has created explosive plays in the passing game. Our OL can and will improve. The best is yet to come in the run game as our OL continues to jell and our WRs continue to develop and mature.
GA Southern once went up against Saban's defense, he later exclaimed they ran through us like you know what through a goose. Saturday FLA did the same thing.
