Former UGA star offers insight on QB situation for playoffs
UGA had a bad all-around performance against Alabama, particularly with coaching and the defense.

The other quarterback can't complete long passes if he's on his back, looking up at a defender. Blueprint was given via Auburn/ Texas A&M, but Kirby wanted to do it his way, which did not work.....Have to have a better decision maker at the QB position(UGA). Need a QB who knows how to complete passes on 3rd down, and utilize the best and most reliable pass catching machine on the team (Pickens), without throwing it to the other team. Kirby has 1 month to get Daniels and Pickens on the same page, Hope he uses the time wisely
Amen. Stet ain't the guy to take us to the promised land. I tried to stand behind Kirby's decision the last part of the season, but I am not now. JT needs to be the starting QB, and even then I don't have any idea if he's the guy that can bring home the Natty. I just hope Kirby makes a decision soon and sticks with JT so playoff practices can go accordingly.
Most accurate statement I've heard from anyone associated with Georgia football. Hell, make Davin our coach. Kirby has squandered more opportunities than I did dating. And you have to be afflicted to keep playing our little QB's instead of the elites that are required now. And we've had at least 2 of them, that Kirby has managed to get 0 out of - because of Kirby not letting them play!
When it comes to the quarterbacks I am sure the position gets evaluated like all others, but it is the most important position on the field. Kirby and his OC choose Daniels as the starter at the beginning on the season for a reason. Now why is it hard for them to put him back in that number one spot. I tell you why...Kirby is not being a coach that make difficult decisions without wanting to hurt feelings. It was easier to keep Bennett in that spot after JT injury because he was playing good than to switch. Which should have been the right thing once JT was healthy.
Would JT have made a difference... don't know considering how poorly the defense played. Didn't understand the defensive scheme. Maybe he should have gotten some advice from A&M, Arkansas, and Auburn DC.
Message for Mike Griffith...
Mike, I tried to comment on your grades for yesterday. I guess you cutoff the comment section, because you knew people would go nuts. Yeppers. Deservingly so.
You are too kind with the grades. We were playing for an SEC Championship. You need to grade accordingly!!
Georgia laid an egg....a rotten stinky egg.
The only parts of our game that were at least pretty good were the O-line in being able to protect Stet pretty well. They also did a decent job in the running game...at times. I'd give the O-line a B+. Camarda had some good punts, and the Special Teams group did ok. Stet threw 2 interceptions and was definitely confused against Bama's disguised defense. He almost threw one or two more interceptions but played pretty well considering that his skill set is limited. I might give Stet a C+. The offense was 3 out of 12 on 3rd downs - another poor 3rd down performance that has gone unnoticed much of the season.
The defense simply failed all around. We couldn't get a pass rush, couldn't contain Young when he scrambled, and definitely couldn't stop the big explosive plays. Our secondary got picked apart - especially in the 2nd half when Bama didn't even have Metchie on the field! We forced zero turnovers and had zero sacks (Auburn had 7 sacks) on Young. Bama had 536 total yards including 421 passing yards. Good grief. The defense gets an F.
Bottom line: We finally played an elite, above average team. We utterly got our butts handed to us on both sides of the ball. We were not as explosive as a National Championship calibre team needs to be in this day and age, and Stet is not the QB for us to bring home the Title. He's just limited in his skills and the play calling yesterday was more conservative than it would have been had JT Daniels been at the helm. We all know Monken would have dialed up more explosive plays had JT been involved. All you need to do is look at every team that has won a National Championship during the playoff years, and you will see an elite QB at the helm.
Coaching? Well, I don't know who to blame for the defense not showing up yesterday. Dan Lanning, Kirby, the players? How do you not show up for this game? The offense had never been tested all season, so we really had no idea how good we were or were not. And I can't blame Stet for playing a pretty good game considering his abilities. The receivers - especially Bowers - were good. I loved seeing Pickens back on the field.
I think this an decision may have cost us this season🤬🤬 Kirby never even got JT reps during the season how can we expect him to into the playoffs with literally no live action and lead us to victory with no real reps with our 1s🤬🤬 Stets most likely will return next year because nobody’s drafting him in this draft I hope this doesn’t affect Brock or Gunner we need both of them
Why did the comments gets deleted on the Report Card article?
When I saw an A- for RB's and a B for the D line in the grades, I laughed. Secondary received a true grade (D+), I'll give him that. guess Mike graded on a curve with the rest of the team 😆
Good comments. But, who said UGA makes the playoffs? The only way the Committee could see it is that UGA be #3 to play #2 Michigan and get beat so Bama can play Michigan...Committee wants no part of UGA and Bama again. Foregone conclusion . But...I cannot see UGA in the top 4 or even 5. Personally, I do not care who leaves UGA coaching staff now...UGA is really not that good against elite talent. Coaching especially. All the work Monken, Lanning, others put in goes up in flames against Bama...every time. Smart is a good defensive coach and recruiter but it ends there. Keep paying him more millions...same result. I have backed Kirby all season...no longer. He had his day of reckoning and lost. Kirby is still old school. Bennett is a prime example of that. You could tell...Saban is head and shoulders a better head coach. Bennett needs to walk away. He is not a consumate college QB...I am saying not elite. NFL won't look his way. Limited skill set.
Georgia need to design plays where their receivers can get some separation. How about some crossing routes and slants. That's all Bama did the past four games we played them. Kirby hasn't figured that out yet. The defensive line looked like they was playing containment instead of pushing the line in rush mode.
Agree with Davin. Surprised JT didn’t get 2d quarter through EO game playing time vs CS or the trade school. Thought we should’ve used Bama’s “backup QB turns the Tide” model. Love Coach Smart but he wasn’t so smart on Sat.
PS: hate to agree with Mullen but 4th and 10. Take the points and keep whatever mo we had…
Any word on why Brini didn't play...was he injured?
The QB decision remains curious and profoundly disappointing. Indeed, we’ll never win a title without an elite QB and a complimentary offensive scheme. Yes, the defense is critically important, but without offensive firepower, defensive-minded teams stand little chance to beat skilled teams like Bama. I seriously question the coaching decision to proceed, even in the face of demonstrably poor play, with comparably inferior QB talent. Kirby chooses Fromm over other five star QBs in Justin Fields and Jacob Eason. Similarly, Kirby chooses Bennett over Daniels. Remaining with the feel-good but unheralded small town Georgia boy over the five star QB is so perplexing. UGA may recruit great talent at the QB position but it has proven, under Kirby’s direction, not to develop or even play that talent. Why?
Once we started rushing 5 we got them off the field. Any less Bryce stood there directing his reivers. Took too long for UGA to make this adjustment. Might as well rush 10 instead of 4 if he is going to complete every pass anyway.
How about we find a QB that can turn around and hand the ball to our RB's instead of throwing it 38 times?
Daniels didn’t lead us on a single TD drive against Clemson….NOT even 1 TD. He had 30 passing attempts for 135 yards, no TDs and 1 INT along with multiple sacks. Why the heck do some of you think he’s the savior? Just asking because that “quick release” doesn’t mean squat if you don’t produce. I hate this “loyalty” garbage being the reason Kirby doesn’t change QBs. I don’t buy into that story at all and I doubt seriously (based on previous games) that JT would have saved us last night. Also, I still think there is something going on with JT that we don’t have knowledge about. Why would you fly JT’s passing coach across the country to work with him 2 weeks ago before the UT game? Clearly that means something was amiss with his mechanics (possibly due to the injuries) to spend thousands of dollars bringing in a coach from California. The season is not over and I still believe we can go all the way, but we need to play with greater intensity from every position……not just QB. Go Dawgs!!!
Exactly right. This adjustment did not occur until mid-way through 3rd quarter. Auburn put all 4 DB's in man coverage and rushed 6-7 guys every play, through the ENTIRE GAME except for the last drive when Bama tied the game to put it in Over-time...And, Auburn was playing with a back-up QB with a bum ankle, only one decent running back, and a UGA transfer receiver
Really? Then explain how Nick Saban and Alabama managed to win National Championships with "game manager" QB's Jake Coker, Andrew McCarron, and Greg McElroy. Not one of them could even come close to being called an "elite" QB but they had enough talent around them to make up the difference.
You're not wrong in your opinion that SBIV isn't getting the job done but it mystifies me that everyone is so sure that JT Daniels is the answer.
Do you sincerely believe, in your heart, that Kirby Smart is so utterly **** that he wouldn't put JT in the game if he thought it would give him a better chance to win? Nobody could be that ****.
JT didn't play for a reason and neither you, or me, or anyone else outside of the coaching staff knows why. Not one of us have watched a practice, attended a QB meeting with JT and the OC staff, or been in that locker room. What we do know is that he was a "five star" recruit with a cannon for an arm but what good is that arm if he can't read a defense or move fast enough to get out of his own way? All that five star rating means, when it's all said and done, is that he was great in high school. Ryan Leaf was a "Five Star" NFL prospect the entire time he was at Washington State and was an utter disaster in the NFL.
I'm not saying any of this to advocate for Stetson, but to be so sure that the answer is sitting on the bench when we have NO idea what the coaching staff knows is just absurd.
And when you get down to it, if you watched that mess last night, the QB position is only one of our problems. Anybody using the word "elite" with that defense, pass coverage in particular, is just delusional.
