Georgia safety Christopher Smith ejected for targeting
Georgia safety Christopher Smith was ejected for targeting late in the first half of the Orange Bowl against Michigan.

I realize why the targeting rule was put in. It does however require significant modification, including NOT removing a player from the game unless it is to the head and appears completely avoidable. In this case, Chris Smith may have led with the crown of the helmet, but the blow was delivered to the mid chest and appeared unavoidable and likely to cause harm to Chris if he had been able to make a nanosecond shift of his neck to avoid that crown contact. This rule MUST change for the coming year. At this point, it is beyond ridiculous. Also, there was absolutely no need to review the interception by Derion Kendrick. The possibility that Kendrick had created pass interference on the play was not reviewable. Looks to me like the refs were trying to find something anyway.
