Winter Weather
Looks like it's going to be freezing tonight...what are you doing to prepare?

I wrapped all of my exposed pipes in my crawl space with foam pipe insulation and I am going to try out the out foam spigot covers. I also blocked up all of my crawlspace vents with foam board. I saw that with the wind chill it would feel like -11 in parts of Georgia so this will be a good test.
Not as spectacular, but opening your cabinets underneath your kitchen and bathroom sinks allows heated air to circulate underneath to help in keeping them from freezing.
Is allowing your outside spigots to drip still a thing, if you don't have covers?
Fill your bathtub with water so if you lose power and live in the boonies you can still have water to flush.
I would definitely leave them to drip if you don’t have covers and are going to experience temperatures below 20 degrees for more than 6 hours.
Covering the outside faucets and few outside plants, house was built in 2016 on a slab & well insulated, nothing else more to do. Supposed to be around 5-10 with wind chill down here on the Ms. Gulf Coast
Hah, never thought of that but thanks for the "head"s up!
I don’t think you want to let your outside spigots drip…with a low Friday night of 9 degrees, that could be a mess. I think the dripping faucets is only inside.
If you don’t have covers, the best thing to do is to cut the spigot valve off in your basement or crawl space and open the spigot to let all of the water out before it freezes.
If I can get over the flu, I plan to do this as well as add the foam covers.
That’s cold, baby!
Greetings from Central America.😎🤣 Actually, kinda wish I was there. I like really cold weather...in small doses.
When we built our house in 2005, I let the builder talk me into using a heat pump in the basement.
I try not to use the heat pump in the winter because below 35, heat pumps have to use the heat strips and that uses a lot of electricity.
My office is the only room in the basement with windows (3 big ones) and I got 2” thick Owens Corning foam board and cut to fit in the window opening. It’s worked well so far, but the 9 degrees tomorrow night will be the test!
I’ve ordered a 3 sensor thermometer from Amazon to put in various places in our unfinished basement.
I’ve put foam boards up against the basement doors to add extra R-value.
I had planned to do more but I’ve been down with the flu…yes, I’m vaccinated and I’m taking Tamiflu but it’s still rough!
Just updated to wind chill factor around ZERO, that is really cold down here
gonna go get milk, eggs, and bread right before the storm hits
What no toliet paper!!!!!!!
I won’t be sleeping in the nude
Here on the Apalachicola Bay I'm going to be busy covering up all the semi-tropical plants and shrubs. Just picked a bushel of meyer lemons which I'll be forcing on all the neighbors. Hard to believe but there are 100 plus year old homes here that only have coal fireplaces for heat. Old timers told me that this will be the coldest snap in over 30 years. Will be back in the 70s by next week so not too stressed about it.
