"It seemed like the field was smaller". Wow, that really sums it up pretty well.

I have to say it’s nice when even a rival acknowledges and compliments our Dawgs !! I wouldn’t have wanted to be in his place seeing all them hungry Dawgs bearing down on me !! Especially Big Jalen Carter !! He’s obviously still having nightmares over that game !! 😀

Yep...that's definitely a "quotable quote". LOL. He's bound to be a Football Correspondent, now.

Jalen Carter was 100% right. Geoff Collins didn't ever seem to have his team prepared. Immediate change once Brent Key became the interim. In a way, we were unprepared for them this year. But I don't think that'll happen anymore. Kirby knows what Key will play like so he'll be a lot more focused on what we need to do.

They were more prepared in 2022.

So, we have a NEW Standard for our defense.....MAKE THE FIELD SMALLER....THE SMALLER THE FIELD FEELS TO YOUR OPPOSITION, THE BETTER YOUR DEFENSE WILL BE......2023, let's make every opponent feel like they're playing in a *phone booth!....GOOOODAWGS, SICEM

    • *for all you DAWGS born after 2000, cell phones replaced landline phones/public phone booths so instead substitute 2 door Mini for phone booth.

Doesn't matter how prepared Tech will be. Paul Johnson had them plenty prepared. So did George O'Leary. Tech will never do anything until they hire a coach and staff that is serious about getting players. And I am sorry, but Brent Key is an O'Leary guy. O'Leary only produced a single first round draft pick during his 8 years at Tech. He spent the entire time there claiming that recruiting elite players at Tech was impossible. Then Chan Gailey replaces him and recruits Calvin Johnson, Demaryius Thomas and Derrick Morgan (plus a bunch of other excellent players like Morgan Burnett, Jonathan Dwyer, Michael Johnson etc.) immediately. But the nerd contingent hated Gailey and - with Mark Bradley as their mouthpiece - used his winning 7 games a year while going through the process of transforming Tech into a real contender by recruiting athletes in the trenches as an excuse to get rid of him because it wasn't as "exciting" as winning 8 games a year with mickey mouse gimmick football like George O'Leary. Seriously. And then they hired Paul Johnson to take them back to the mickey mouse gimmick football. Worked great when he still had Gailey's players! With his own? Not so great.

Geoff Collins was sold as "a guy with SEC experience who will get the talent back" but that was a sham. For all the hype about Collins' Alabama connections, he was only there for 1 season - in 2007 - and was merely director of player personnel. Collins was DC at Mississippi State and Florida, but those defenses were terrible AND during Dan Mullen and Jim McElwain eras when those programs did some of their worst recruiting. The truth is he was just another ACC hire from Temple. And this was after Georgia Tech's bad experience with another Temple guy - Al Golden - as their defensive coordinator.

I will believe that Tech is serious about winning in football when they hire another NFL guy with college experience like Chan Gailey, or when they hire someone directly from the staff of a program that is actually good at football. Last time around Tech did not offer the job to Clemson's offensive coordinator (who is now at Virginia) or defensive coordinator (now at Oklahoma). And this time around, Tech made no attempts to hire Joe Brady (the guy behind the LSU 2019 team), Brian Johnson (the former Utah and Florida offensive coordinator and current Eagles QB coach) or Todd Monken. Or the ideal coaching candidate for Georgia Tech, Bryan McClendon. McClendon is one of the best recruiters in the country, has coordinator experience in the SEC East and the Pac-12, would have been the OC at Miami had he not left to rejoin UGA, and Tech didn't even consider the guy.

Instead, Tech was going to hire a 62 year old coach from Tulane. A guy who has never in his 40 year coaching career EVER been on a staff higher than the AAC level. Prior to Tulane, Willie Fritz was at Georgia Southern (Sun Belt) and a bunch of FCS, Division II and JUCO schools. So yeah, 2 of Tech's last 3 hires were going to be former Georgia Southern coaches. This was the guy who was going to go head-to-head with big time programs for 4 and 5 star players? But some Tech folks revolted at the idea of their last 3 hires in a row being from Navy, Temple and Tulane (seriously!) and forced Tech to retain Key. At least Key actually was on Alabama's coaching staff (OL coach for 3 years) but let's be honest. Most of his experience is being on George O'Leary's staff at UCF for 11 years. O'Leary only produced 2 ranked UCF teams, and 2 of his other UCF teams were winless!

And, not thrilled with Key's first staff. Tech could have done better for an OC than a quality control coach with no OC experience at the major college level. And for DC, instead of trying to make a big splash by going for a big name i.e. a position coach at a major program who can help him recruit - he retains the guy that Geoff Collins brought from Temple. For position coaches, he brought back a couple of former players as sops to the alums, but really the only evidence that he is after blue chip players was hiring Chris Weinke because of his connections to IMG Academy and Josh Crawford because he is a recent product of the Georgia high school football factory scene. It is a staff for a higher profile Group of 5 program like Boise or Houston instead of a traditional ACC power located in a major city in the state that produces the most major college football talent per capita in the country. Consider that Louisville, a perennial loser (12 bowl victories in 110 years of football) and less than 10 years ago a Group of 5 program, was able to raid the head coach of the winner of the Big 10 West.

So no, UGA won't have anything to fear from Tech. Instead, Key will likely do just enough at Tech to keep his job - win 8 or 9 games a year with an occasional conference title - for the next 25 years. Good news for UGA fans. Good news for the Tech fans who love to proclaim that they are achieving mediocrity "the right way."

Props to an opponent, especially your in-state rival, willing to be honest like that.
