Unfortunately it is not about winning anymore for most. It is about NIL money and building your brand. The allure of playing in the spotlight in LA with the showbiz draw and media exposure trumps everything else. He would go into the NFL already a corporate entity with an established world wide following.

Oh please. It isn't about "NIL money and building your brand." It is about going to a school that has a track record of producing QBs who are high draft picks and/or have long NFL careers, or about playing for coaches who have a history of producing such QBs.

Being a first round pick and signing a contract with $10 million in guaranteed money will set you and your family for life. The next best thing - catching on as a 3rd or 4th rounder and sticking around long enough to get a long term deal even as a backup - is the same. By contrast you have QBs who won national titles that were in broadcasting 4 years later. And those are QBs, whom the broadcast booth is way more favorable to (for reasons). A lot of guys with rings at other positions are working jobs that pay less than the average UGA (or other major college) graduate makes.

The 3 guys who were on the 2018 Bama QB depth chart (Jalen Hurts, Mac Jones, Tua) were NFL starters last year. And yes they all have rings (Jones has 2) as does Bryce Young (was on the 2020 team with Jones) who will join them next year. Clemson had 2 guys that were NFL starters last year (Deshaun Watson, Trevor Lawrence) and they both had rings. Ohio State and Oklahoma haven't won titles but they came reasonably close (OU took UGA to OT in 2017, Ohio State was a missed field goal away last year) and 5 of their recent QBs (Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray, Jalen Hurts, Dwayne Haskins, Justin Fields) became NFL starters with CJ Stroud to make it 6 in a few weeks.

That is what UGA will need to do in order to recruit guys like Raiola who prefer millions in the NFL to whatever Jacob Coker (rings at FSU and Alabama) is doing right now. It was Kirby Smart's choice to go with Jake Fromm in 2017 and SB IV in 2020 (before benching him, benching him again and finally sticking with him full time in 2021) over some very talented guys who would have given UGA a superior vertical passing game because Smart chose defense and a risk-averse approach over vertical passing. Well guess what? The NFL requires that its starters be superior vertical passers. Even Lamar Jackson, who is in the NFL primarily because of his 4.38 40 time, is a better vertical passer than Fromm and SB IV.

Smart was nuts to believe that Arch Manning would come to UGA and play in a dink-and-dunk offense that would lead to his being a 5th round pick and "bounce around the NFL as a practice squad/3rd QB" type like Jake Fromm. The amazing thing is that Smart was already on Nick Saban's staff when Saban was forced to open up the offense - hired Lane Kiffin to get it done - in order to recruit more talented QBs. The guy was just stubborn. Hopefully Smart bringing back "throw downfield off play action" Mike Bobo shows that he has learned from that debacle. But if Smart chooses the guy with the weakest arm on the team to continue with the "dink and dunk to the tailbacks and run reverses while occasionally throwing it downfield to the TEs" then yeah, resign yourself to 3 star talent at QB, RB and WR (the 5 star OLs and TEs will continue to come though) because that is all UGA will get.
