Georgia very happy to have a healthy Smael Mondon back on defense: ‘His instincts are huge’
ATHENS — With how well Georgia has recruited the inside linebackers over the years, it’s easy to become fixated on who the next big thing is. Especially with 5-star freshmen like Chris Cole and Justin Williams pushing for playing time.

As great as his performance contribution was, I believe it was his leadership that stood out the most. This was the most "settled" the defense has looked in a long time and that is saying a lot coming against a team that looks to move at a very quick pace. He had the guys lined up and assignment-ready and it absolutely showed, especially as the game progressed. A huge welcome back and one whale of a job for Mr. Mondon. Keep it coming and Go DAWGS!
Smael makes me smile.
During the game, I told my dog that Smael being back would be the difference maker. His LEADERSHIP helped us shut Tennessee down! Dooley agrees
Watching the LB play you could see the difference it made to have Smael in the middle; he has the rare speed, sure tackling and intelligence to make plays from the ML position while also lining up everybody else. The perfect example was when SM was out and Tennessee ran for a TD right up the middle. Ryan Wilson overplayed the run and lost his gap responsibility, the back got through the first level and there wasn’t anyone there to stop him. Hopefully, SM stays heathy and finishes the season strong.
