How Brent Key has used more than just ‘hate’ to get Georgia’s full attention
Brent Key has gotten Georgia's full attention ahead of Friday's game with Georgia Tech
Comments
Tech was very lucky to beat a weak NC State team last week.. to hell with GT..GoDAWGS!
Tech has definitely improved under Key and Faulkner. I think the 2 QB system is confusing defenses and keeping them off balance during each series. Tech stuffed Cam and the Miami team just as it was playing its best football.
The Portal has helped Tech, but their recruiting has improved significantly. They never used to break into the Top 50 in the recruiting rankings, but they were #35 in 2024 and are currently ranked #17 for 2025. An impressive move up the ladder.
DAWGS cannot look past the Jackets and need to bring their A game.
Two points—-"truly despise everything about it. I really do"—Brent Key shows he knows nothing about what we have as lovers of the Dawgs and Dawgnation. He's jealous of what we are privileged to wake up to every day. Watching Tech play NC state last Thursday—Bobby Dodd seats 52000—half of all the upper decks were empty, plus half the seats in the bottom row—that means they must've had 25000 to 30000 in attendance—High School football. (2)I congratulate Jalon Walker for his Butkus nomination—if he "played" every down, he would be a shoo-in, but he takes too many plays off. Need him this Friday!! GO DAWGS
I went to a Tech game this year with a few acquaintances. I couldn't believe all the " to hell with Georgia" crap and chants. They played their favorite wins on the jumbo screen and they were all Georgia from decades ago. If you closed your eyes, you would think they were playing UGA. I just didn't realize how we live rent free in their heads. I mean wow. I don't know too many dawg fans that think about Tech. Despise and Hate are serious words.
I have always hated those clowns. I remember many, many years ago as a UGA student, some of the tech guys from my fraternity's chapter at that cesspool came to our beautiful mansion on South Milledge and trashed the place. I hated everything about them then and I hate them now.
And I know Smart does. I can only imagine the speeches he is giving the team to fire them up. I want to beat the snot out of them and make them regret ever having taken up the sport of college football and wishing for the days of a JV squad. And that snot-nosed j@ck@ss of a coach of theirs needs to be shut up and apologizing to the dozen people that support their team for ever daring to rile up the University of Georgia.
….and to hell with georgia tech.
@MontanaDawg They used to never break in the top 50 under two coaches that never really tried that Tech hired "because academics": George O'Leary and Paul Johnson. Johnson infamously came to Georgia Tech because no one else would hire him from Navy and basically coasted after he couldn't parlay his early success into a job that he really wanted. O'Leary was the same: he thought that a couple of winning seasons at Tech would get him a job up north - this was before the southeast (FSU, Florida and Miami don't count) began dominating college football in the BCS era - or in the NFL and never really tried in Atlanta.
Bill Curry (who Alabama hired away), Bobby Ross and Chan Gailey all proved that you could get top 20 classes and NFL prospects consistently to Georgia Tech. So did Bill Lewis and Geoff Collins. They just couldn't do anything with it. Running off Chan Gailey, who was actually winning recruiting battles against major SEC and Big 10 schools, to wind up with Johnson because the guys at the AJC thought that building up both lines in order to run a pro-style offense and strong defense (you know, the formula that has won all those national titles for the SEC and even the Big 10 the past 25 years) was "boring" and they wanted to see the more "innovative" and "exciting" ACC mickey mouse flag football was a horrible decision that set Georgia Tech back going on 20 years (the 10 that Johnson was there, the 4 that it took to figure out that Collins wasn't the guy, and now Key needs to prove that he is capable of more than the occasional big upset). If Tech's administrators don't listen to Mark Bradley, who made driving off Gailey his personal mission since the day that Gailey announced that he was ditching the freeze option for a pro style offense, Tech probably wins those national titles that went to Clemson instead.
Key can woof all he wants, but practically anyone can bring in decent skill and edge players who don't want to compete for playing time at title contenders and use them to win 7 games a year in the ACC. Curry, Ross and Gailey didn't go that route. They put in the work to recruit future NFL offensive linemen and defensive front 7 players. 3 years in and Key still isn't doing it. Only 1 recruit in this class over 290 and only 3 over 275. They are also running the current fad 4-2-5 defense and using undersized LBs, and having athletic QBs run all over the place instead of creating an identity running tailbacks between the tackles and developing a downfield passing game. Typical ACC program building. That's what you get when you hire a former ACC player who spent most of his career on George O'Leary staffs. Kirby has nothing to worry about from Key.
Someone on a University of Georgia football forum actually down-voted the fact that I hate tech, as every true Georgia fan should? Seriously?
That is really, really sad.
Waiting on the next down vote…..
I'm always amazed at how many people constantly criticize the AJC (or the NY Times) for having no influence and being on the verge of extinction, while at the same time blaming those same supposedly worthless organizations for somehow having enough influence to make colleges change football coaches or set the agendas for professional sports organizations. I just wanted to say that.
All Key did was help motivate the Dawgs with comments like that. But as @MontanaDawg stated very wisely, our Dawgs Do need to stay focused, take care of business, beat the bugs, chalk the W and move on. Gotta keep an eye out for dirty play from them to !! Please no injuries as we need all hands on deck for the SECCG !! Go Dawgs mash the butter bugs !!!
Key’s comments and Smart’s comments show where the two programs are right now. GT is trying to win the state and UGA is trying to win another CFP. Key has to make GT relevant in Georgia so he can recruit the athletes he needs to compete in the ACC.
It was fun watching Key's countenance on the sidelines go from the arrogant and cocky to one of fear and anger. Key's game scheme of using his QB as its main runner is not a sustainable one. He is really just a version of the old Paul "Fishfry" Johnson. Without the warrior Haines King, Georgia Tech will revert to its usual losing personality. Key will abandon Bobby Dodd stadium for a better head coaching job before the "Ramblin Wreck" goes off the cliff…
Perhaps Kirby Smart could convince Brent Key to trade Buster Faulkner for Mike Bozo…
