Get it right: Georgia, not Georgia Tech, had legends made Friday night
ATHENS — The Georgia-Georgia Tech game was an instant classic, even if Bulldogs fans may want to fast forward to halftime while watching the replay.

Great article Mike. I didn't realize Tech had played only 1 game in the last 19 days. A definite advantage. Sure, Beck was clutch when he needed to be, but I will give a Kudos out to Haynes King as he was their main weapon that kept Tech fighting. The guy is a true tough, gritty competitor.
After that tough game, just hoping our extra 24 hours of rest gets us over the hump against Texas.
Personally I feared Ga Tech going for 2 at the end of the game but instead they kicked the EP. I thought that was their chance to win it. I let out a sigh of relief when they didn't try. I also thought that starting in the 3rd overtime overtime they abandoned the QB run and felt like they needed t pass it for some strange reason. THey got away from their bread and butter.
Mike—what a great article!! You are correct-people don't know a lot of these facts about the game and the situations of the two teams. If legends were made, these legends are named Jackson and Beck. We seem to be approaching the end of "Wokeness", but are still just a few weeks from getting out of the jungle. GO DAWGS
Fantastic column, Mike Griffith. Even if you are a Yankee…
What an AWESOME column @MikeGriffith - Heck ,I'm even more fired up than when Frazier broke the goal line for the win! So many excellent points and a great capture of key moments and players that made this possible. It takes a great man and team to fix the mess they got themselves into, and on Friday night, UGA showed they were that man and team.
The one point you didn't capture (but it is implicit in the moral victory element) is that either GT "deserved" to win or UGA "didn't deserve" to win. The man/team that deserves to win is the man/team that perseveres until the end, until the final whistle is blown, and that team was indeed the DAWGS.
On to Atlanta and a very banged up and limited team will face another foe with ill intent. Go DAWGS!
@MikeGriffith Excellent read Mike !! Allot of info. that I didn’t realize and info. we as Dawgs fans need to Remember !! Thx Mike !!
Mike, I'll add to the kudos…your best piece ever! Can't wait till you share it with Finebaum!!!!! I'm repeating Kirby, but The Dawgs won because they had more WANT and DESIRE…..along with Talent,Coaching and Depth all came together to secure the victory…..by this time next year Brent will be able to write/co-write a dissertation on Nate Frazier….and with a bit of good health fortune, several additional RB's, TE's, WR's, O-Line, D-Line, LB's, Corners and for sure QB!
Mike -great story and it tells the REAL story of this team and Friday night. Im not taking anything away from Haynes King he is a **** warrior. But UGA was and is the much better team and they stood up early saturday morning and took the win. And yes i said Took the win.
And Brent Key can go to hell.
Go DAWGS
Best piece I have read in a very long time
Claiming that Brent Key will never beat UGA precludes the possibility of Key building Tech into the sort of program that wins 10-11 games a year and goes to the playoff. As it is more likely than not that FSU, Miami, Virginia Tech, NC State, UNC, Syracuse and Louisville are never going to go back to their previous heights I see no reason why Clemson and Tech can't become the class of the ACC.
Also, Beck was "more clutch than King" because he handed off to the tailback who actually made the play to win the game? Because prior to that Beck was just as ineffective as King at getting the ball into the endzone, including his own rushing attempt not coming close. Also, it is easier to be clutch when you have better players around you. King is the guy trying to build a moribund program into respectability. Beck inherited a team that won 2 straight national titles. Beck also had his starting RB healthy at the end of the game. Tech's Jamal Haynes got injured on Buster Faulkner's horrible decision to use him on a "seal the game" vertical pass downfield. It failed because - unlike the ACC rabble that Tech usually plays - UGA actually has future NFL talent at linebacker capable of playing pass coverage downfield like Chaz Chambliss.
I do agree that Tech invested way more effort into the UGA game than they did in their other 4 losses, 3 of which they had the talent to win. I posted a long diatribe on that myself the other day. That SHOULD have been the focus of @MikeGriffith's post: how Tech clearly had the talent to be more than 7 win teams in 2023 and 2024 but blew it on making UGA their entire season. Syracuse, by contrast, upset Tech early this season and parlayed that into a 9 win season with a clearly less talented team. Both Tech and Syracuse upset Miami, but only Syracuse is going to get any real benefit from it.
Beck will be a 1st round NFL draft pick. Haynes King, meanwhile, doesn't have the arm (strength or accuracy) to be an NFL QB. King should have invested his efforts into becoming an NFL safety - for which he has the 6'3" 200 lb. 4.5 40 height, size and speed - instead of spending his career as a QB on 7 win Georgia Tech and Texas A&M teams, but hindsight is 20/20.
Excellent article!
Excellent facts of the reality of what Kirby and his TEAM have accomplished this beyond brutal schedule that the SEC laid at the feet of said company… Kirby and his staff should be SEC coaches of the year period@
Go Dawgs… and the Dawgs fight on this Sat in the Benz!
It's time once again, to defend your state. GATA!!!
