What Carson Beck transfer says about Gunner Stockton, Georgia QB room moving forward
ATHENS — Georgia already knew it was going to have a new starting quarterback in 2025. It just did not think that its former starter, Carson Beck, would be sticking around and starting for someone else.

Get the OL play up to standard, and Georgia will be Very good next year. Go Dawgs!
Conner—If you're assigning blame for the "critical fumble just before halftime" , at least put the blame where it belongs— that would be on the L side of our offensive line. When Trevor was hit in the backfield and lost the ball—that's a fumble.
Lot of talk about QBs and WRs and not nearly enough about O line recruiting. Going with same group won't cut it.
Here’s an excerpt from CBS Sports Brandon Marcello’s report detailing the tensions between Beck and certain members of the UGA program:
@Stiffneck...no surprise. I had said yesterday that I felt sure there was something off, some tension, something going on between him and players and/or coaches. Let's be honest - the guy has never fit into this program. He hasn't been embraced like Stetson was or like Gunner appears to be.
I wish him the best, but I think most of us are about ready for him to take his Lambo and Tiktok girlfriend out of town.
Not surprised, thought he was a "me guy" from the very start. Can remember his very first start against UAB and he threw an interception. He watched the fellow making the interception run right by him without making an effort to tackle him. He was later seen on the sidelines laughing at the event…..he was later replaced by Bennett and the rest was history.
Have seen him laughing a few times on the sidelines this year when we/he turned the ball over. When Gunner lead the team to a score this last game…there are shots of him on the sidelines looking sad as hayul.
I certainly wouldn't want him as a teammate.
No doubt he has talent, but I say it's time to move on. There is a reason that teammates were happy to see Gunner. I say good riddance; we are better off as a team without him.
Thought the same, he was in the backfield before Gunner could even get set.
Yeah, I would imagine that a significant majority of Dawg fans would agree that it was time for Beck to move on. No matter what happens, I will still consider him a DGD and root for him to hopefully succeed in the NFL. I think he's an excellent player and may wind up fitting the NFL mold well if he finds the right team. He doesn't really seem to fit the "college" mold vs someone like Stockton which seems to "fire up" the team.
I read that CBS piece on potential drama and honestly I get "both sides" of the story. Certainly you can't blame someone for flying out to see the best doctors when time is money and choices made are huge. Also, everyone seems to forget that this isn't a video game where you just have an "injured" label attached to you. Who knows what sort of daily pain and discomfort he has to go through and how it affects his sleep and such. Either way, though, I doubt those are the REAL reasons. I think both Coaches and Beck knew it was time to move on and honestly it's better to give other guys a chance to play.
I'm surprised that there also isn't more emphasis being placed on Miami being where his girlfriend is. I have no idea how serious they are, but wouldn't you do almost anything to be closer to your girlfriend? Miami to Athens isn't exactly a "Sunday drive". It may be that he was able to get through this year thinking he was going to the NFL and maybe they could live together wherever he went. Since that's not a possibility and Miami loses their Top Draft QB, it would seem to be a near obvious answer to go there if Miami is interested.
Once again, Stockton’s fumble was NOT his fault. He can’t block and throw the ball at the same time. Stockton is NOT the reason Georgia lost the sugar bowl. Bad offensive line play, pathetic play calling and execution, untimely and very costly penalties (some by the team leaders), unexplainable preparations, and no sideline discipline lost that game. The O line was awful all season, that’s coaching. No play calls to showcase Stockton’s ability. No defensive spy on the nd qb. On the 4th down debacle, Georgia didn’t need to send the defense out so quickly because the official was standing over the ball. The defense should have come out slower and caused nd to call a timeout. That game looked more like the Vandy and tech games from Kirby’s first season.
As always, Go Dawgs!
The KEY to a successful 2025 Dawg season will be the O-Line…. "The offensive line is a question mark, at best, entering 2025. But Georgia has recruited well and brings back a handful of veterans with experience to help protect Stockton."….as I've said before, Big and **** don't scare anybody and sure as hell don't protect a QB, much less open holes for RB's….The Dawg 2025 O-Line comes Big and ****, what needs to be honed is STRENGHT and QUICKNESS emphasizing technique with a large portion of WANT and DESIRE not to be humiliated by undersized defenses….Gunner will never have a release as quick as CB's but I believe he is a better passer given time to make his checks and deliver the ball…..add his mobility and NEVER QUIT attitude and his leadership ability and Gunner will raise the standard for all future Georgia QB's……It's high time the members of the 2025 DAWG TEAM step up, ball out and over shadow the great memories and accomplishments of Carson, Brock, Ladd, Sed, Malaki, Smael, Tate, Amarius, Jalon, Javon, et al….
The OL has to improve for the offense to be successful. I can't see how it could get much worse next season than it was at times this past season for the OL..GoDAWGS!
Beck is moving on, I wish him the best, hold no malice toward him. I’m Extremely concerned about the future of Dawgs O Line.
I remember Cleary how most Dawgs fans including myself were raving about how great the O Line would be in preseason 2024. But look what we got.
The O Line had four and five star players several of which were veteran players. I remember how we raved about the Depth and talked about If there were injuries we’d Still be in pretty good shape. But look what happened.
If Searls couldn’t coach UP those players. How/Why should we expect him to coach UP the new guys coming in ?? I don’t know how probable it is but it Might be possible he’s teaching Bad techniques to Good football players. What ever he Is or Isn’t doing is a huge Failure.
On the WRs there’s a I think fairly possible problem with Coaching there to. But Hopefully it was more of an over all Unit talent problem. Maybe the talent level will be increased such that WRs won’t be As Much of a problem.
But will Kirby as he has in the past expect WRs to also be premier blockers else they don’t see the field ?? I understand and appreciate that they should have fundamental blocking skills. BUT their primary and Most important skill set should be getting separation from defenders, running smooth and polished routes, being on the same page with the QB, and Catching The Freaking ball !!
Remember when Lawson Luckie a TE made that acrobatic catch in the SECCG ?? He put his body on the line in order to do that. Now think on it, how many times do you see our WRs really lay it on the line to catch the ball ?? Yeah Some but not nearly enough.
Brock Bowers and Ladd McConkey USED their natural athletic abilities AND put their bodies on the line to Make the fantastic catches they made. That’s a large part of why Both are in the NFL and flourishing there.
To many times Some not all but some of our WRs act like Oh No I’m Not Even Gonna Try to catch that pass I might get hit. The ideal WRs imho are those that are also football players Not prima-donnas. Bowers and McConkey gave their all any time the ball was remotely catchable. Thats what we need and that’s what I’m hoping we are getting. Just my opinions and thoughts. I want to see more Courage and Effort from Some of these guys in terms of the Whole Team. Go Dawgs !!
This is an excellent summary and I'll double down on the O-line issue being heavily coaching (maybe including conditioning as well as part of that coaching?).
One thing I would add would be motivation from their QB... it just seemed to me that as the season went on, the interaction with CB and the line seemed less-and-less teammate-like (can't really come up with a better term). It was apparent in huddles (as well as the sidelines) if you look back at some game films.
Coaching clearly needs to improve in '25... but CKS (the buck stops there) needs to ensure he has a QB/leader who generates followership, too. I think Gunner, with time, reps, and experience, has the potential for much better results around that than CB had this past season
Love this summary! Bobo’s play calling (3 pass plays) prior to ND’s field goal cost us 10 points. 1 or 2 runs likely leaves ND no time for the field goal and no fumble on our next possession as there likely wouldn’t have been one. Also correct that Stockton’s fumble was due to no blocking.
I, for one, think we throw around the DGD label waay too loosely these days. It should take more to being a DGD than just saying someone stayed in school for three years and didn't transfer when they could have. We have walkons that do that. They need to be good teammates as well, and believe me, Carson Beck was NOT that. He sowed discord behind the scenes that most people on this thread will never hear about because Kirby doesn't operate that way. And it wasn't just about his girlfriend and his car. But believe me, he did some VERY shady things relative to his NIL deal long before we got to the Sugar Bowl. And oh yeah, don 't believe all of this, "he called Gunner Stockton before the Sugar Bowl," business either. They had one conversation, and it wasn't all that, more of a show than anything else. And yes, he was at the Sugar Bowl, but he didn't arrive until two days after the team, didn't attend media day and generally was distant from his teammates. He showed up to fulfill his commitment so he could be sure to get his final NIL payment (due later this month) from Georgia. If Miami (or anyone else) is willing to pay Carson Beck $4 million, good for them and him. But does ANYONE think that deal came about in a mere seven (7) days? No, Beck was plotting this from the get-go, although he didn't know when he declared for the NFL draft whether any school would cough up enough $$$ for him. Miami did. But he will never be considered a DGD by me. And I'll bet if they could say it, the VAST MAJORITY of current Georgia players and coaches would agree. Go Dawgs!
