If Georgia is going to do a better job supporting its QB, Mike Bobo says it starts with the run game
Georgia will have a new quarterback next season. Carson Beck is headed to Miami, leaving Gunner Stockton and Ryan Puglisi to battle it out to replace the two-year starter.

I totally agree we MUST get our running game cranked-up, but it starts with the OL……not the RBs. If our OL performance doesn’t drastically improve next season then Kirby has some big decisions to make like Luke or Pittman (if either is available). Go Dawgs!!!
Totally agree BubbaBill. If there isn't a change, we know what will happen. Kirby can stick his head in the sand with Bobo and Searls, but it will hurt him. He could at least bring in co offensive coordinator and O line coach. That would be the least.
And the run game starts with what?
Here's what I've learned from watching Georgia football over the years:
1) The O-Line is an underrated aspect of college football. QB gets sacked, you lose major yards. QB under pressure, he makes bad decisions. O-Line can't open paths, running game doesn't work. Size isn't everything. Players like Carter and Davis big reasons why the Philadelphia Dawgs are doing so well.
2) If the Defense predicts run, you CAN'T run. I had no idea what "Loading the box" meant before Georgia football. We've had some of the best RBs ever, but without the pass element, they get stopped. This also applies to play calling. If your play calling is always run-run-pass, then you're going to be doing a lot of "3 and outs".
3) Bobo CAN call a great game, but it only seems to happen after getting humiliated by the previous game. Bobo is totally unable to adapt "on the fly". SOMETIMES he can recover after halftime, but that's unacceptable for the salary of the job.
4) A week off is not good for Georgia preparation (especially if the opponent has a week off as well). There is a refusal to prepare "for the opponent" while the opponent prepares to play Georgia. This points solely to coaching and represents a real problem.
5) Smart values loyalty too highly which mean she can never be a Saban. Saban has a long history of swapping out QBs and such when they struggle and does so unapologetically. Saban knows that sometimes QBs have off days and also knows that the other team probably isn't prepared to play a backup QB. Did Stockton deserve a chance to play more when Beck struggled? Saban would've. That doesn't mean that we would've won games we lost and could've resulted in losses in games we won, but I would've liked to see that playout.
Will Muschamp still handing out at UGA?
just to be clear - Etienne’s “critical red zone fumble” against Notre Dame was the result of Anthony Evan’s missed block. Evans was responsible for the guy coming off the edge who hit Etienne almost as Gunner handed him the ball, and whiffed totally. I question Evan’s focus and commitment for that game given that he announced his portal entry the day after. We will not miss him.
Muschamp could help now that the season is over. Have not heard one word about his availability. Bobo is honestly trying his best…he needs help. Searels is a puzzle? Now we are talking Greene and Freeling returning as a big thing?? Really? Someone give me cause for hope in 2025?
I would be fine with Matt Luke, but Pittman’s glory days are behind him. Noticed in Arkansas bowl game that he was walking with severe limp, and he was grimacing in pain. In my opinion, you needs high energy guy as O line coach. No shortage of good young coaches if Kirby decides to make a change.
IF you have a good O-line that can open up creases or holes consistently then any really good RB out of HS is going to flourish. THey don't have to be Heisman material. BUt if your O-line cant open creases or holes then even Heisman type RB's are going to have tough sledding. It starts with the O-line.
If GUnner is the QB next season then the O-line will have to get better or else., Gunner will not fourish. He takes much longer to make a decision and his release is more of a windup than Carson's who was known for a "quick release". He will take the O-line being able to hold their blocks another half second longer.
No way on God's green earth Saban would put up with being 102 in college in rushing. Somebody would lose their job.
An elite offensive line can cover a multitude of flaws elsewhere on an offense.
no one was scared of ugas offensive line mauling them. We need some junkyard dawgs that like to fight on there.
So what I get out of this is we are not moving away from Bobo next year, great! Looks like our run game next year will be more WR screen's
To run the ball at a championship level you need championship tailbacks. Ohio State brought in 220 lb. Quinshon Judkins, who rushed for nearly 1600 yards in 2022 and 1200 yards in 2023 as a starter for 8-5 and 11-2 Ole Miss teams and will be taken in the 2nd round in the upcoming NFL draft. They are playing for the national title in a week. Georgia brought in 205 lb. Trevor Etienne, who rushed for 720 yards in 2022 and 750 yards as a backup for 6-7 and 5-7 Florida teams and - unlike Judkins - chose to return for his senior season because he wouldn't get drafted.
The funny part? Ohio State already had TreVeyon Henderson, who very fortunately for Georgia was injured in the 2022 national title game. Why? Because Henderson will ALSO be taken in the 2nd round. So despite already having a 2nd round talent at RB, Ohio State paid the money necessary to land ANOTHER one. Expect both Judkins and Henderson to cross 1000 yards by halftime. That is why Ohio State is playing in the title game and UGA is at home. Yes, go ahead and downvote me you usual suspects but you know that it is true.
Not because Ohio State's offensive line is so much better than UGA's. It isn't. Ryan Day hasn't recruited the athletes up front that his predecessors Jim Tressel and Urban Meyer did. No, Ryan Day gets the future NFL players at WR and RB. And this year, unlike 2022 and 2023, all his best WRs and RBs are finally healthy for the stretch run.
It is true that UGA could use another front 7 like the one that they had in 2021. But that type of talent only comes around once every 10 years. To contend more consistently, UGA's WR and RB recruiting has to get better, both out of high school and in the portal. UGA made the 2017 title game because it had 3 starting NFL tailbacks. It won the 2021 and 2022 titles because of NFL starters catching the ball Brock Bowers, Ladd McConkey, George Pickens PLUS 2nd and 3rd round picks Darnell Washington, Jermaine Burton and AD Mitchell who were all 2nd or 3rd round picks complimenting them. Georgia was also the 2nd best team in 2012 because of Todd Gurley and Keith Marshall combining for 2150 rushing yards complimented with 6 guys catching the ball (Tavarres King, Malcolm Mitchell, Marlon Brown, Arthur Lynch, Michael Bennett, Chris Conley) who would have started in Athens this year. Don't laugh: Mitchell won a Super Bowl with the Patriots. Chris Conley was a 3rd round pick. King was a 5th rounder, as was Arthur Lynch, who was every bit the receiver that Oscar Delp is but also a much better blocker.
The coordinator for that 2012 offense? Mike Bobo. They put up 38 points per game. The problem with that team was the defense. If UGA could consistently combine the talent that Mark Richt recruited at skill players with the talent that Kirby Smart gets on defense and the OL, they'd have a run like Saban did at Alabama.
He had just undergone hip replacement surgery right before that game.
We only have 4 diff running plays and virtually zero miss direction. Easy to defend unless we get a hoss dawg rb...wonder why they don't wanna come here?
