Georgia quarterback Gunner Stockton embraces comparison to Stetson Bennett

Thanks Mike for putting that out today. Nice, thorough, balanced and good article too.
I have no idea why people question Stockton. In the SEC Championship game UGA was floundering. Stockton provided the spark. Yes he threw a bad INT, but nothing Carson hadn't done multiple times. He's a baller. UGA should have won the playoff game against ND. The call where Stockton fumbled should have never been called. Protect the ball and it's 6-3 at the half. Not something UGA wouldn't rally around.
Just like Stetson….Gunner is being largely disrespected by the national media. And just like Stetson he will make them pay for it.
Stockton is questioned because he is still unknown and how the ND game went, which is not fair. I think he did great under the circumstances myself. And as pointed out, his supporting cast matters as much as he does. OL, WR's, TE's, RB's, game plan and play-calling. Throw all that together plus with him being undersized, well I have questions, but I believe in him from what I have seen too. I was impressed. If Beck came back and played in the ND game, all that would be said was how UGA appears to be in very good hands with Gunner, based on one half of the SEC championship game in which he came in losing, brought a huge spark and engineered a gritty comeback win over a very good Texas defense. But, Gunner played agsainst ND, who had both an excellent defense and game plan that played perfectly against UGA that day. No Ladd or Brock or even close to them and that is why their plan was able to work. This season, all that needs to change for Gunner to show what he can do. Or not do.
Good read, Mike. I believe Stockton will exceed all of our expectations.
Good discussion. IMO, the quality in Stockton that will make a difference was the same in Bennett—the IT factor. They are both scrappy and they are both winners. Stockton set many all-time Georgia HS records and he played up. I think he was starting at HS QB as a 15 YO! His numbers were incredible, but he played in a small division. That tendency to play up flashed in the SECCG and the Notre Dame game. He is just starting out, but I'm hoping he will end up being one of the great UGA QBs when it's all said and done. Injuries could limit him, but I'm optimistic.
I like his desire. Burning fire to win. I have high hopes.
As far as Stetson is concerned, who will ever be like Stetson? He was no walk on. He was chain lightening in a can. He threw the ball very well, especially the deep ball. He was very fast. And he had the heart of a lion. He just wanted so bad. Maybe too bad at times. The king of backyard ball. Just don't think we'll ever see another Stetson.
