Brandon Adams' revisionist history is hilarious. Far from protecting Beck, he threw Beck under the bus and blamed him for his own injury. Smart knew that the 2024 WRs and RBs weren't going to be good after they did nothing in 2023 when Bowers and McConkey got hurt. Yet after 2024 when he knew that Stockton would be the QB, he lands the best WR haul of his UGA tenure plus one of the better RB classes. He tried his level best to force Beck, a dropback passer, into the RPO game but had Bobo design the "anaconda" offense around what Stockton could and couldn't do.
And no, Adams, Beck did not play poorly until that last drive. Instead Beck had a very good first half. That can't be true for a guy who had 268 yards and 3 TDs for an offense who scored 31 points. Note that UGA's offense only scored 27 against that same defense. He just had a poor 3rd quarter after Ole Miss made halftime adjustments. He rebounded with 2 TDs in the 4th.
Also, the attempt to imply that Beck is merely along for the ride on a loaded team is hilarious. Beck has nearly 3600 yards and 29 TDs this year. Adams wanted to give Stockton the Heisman for under 2900 yards, 24 TDs AND a lower completion percentage. Finally he attributes Beck's success to Malachi Toney. Problem? Toney played a smaller role in Miami's offense than did Zachariah Branch for Georgia.
The obvious point from Beck's season is that Kirby Smart should have put in the same effort to get the big time WRs and RBs for Beck that he did for Fromm, Bennett and Stockton. He should have made the changes on offense for Beck that he did for those 3. For Fromm, he fires Chaney and hires Coley. For SB IV he fires Coley and hires Monken. For Beck, he brings back Bobo but forces him to call Monken's plays. For Stockton, Bobo has to abandon his entire career of balanced pro style offense in favor Stockton handing off, throwing to Branch and running with everything else practically being a trick play.
Remember: Kirby only recruited Beck to keep Dan Mullen from getting him at Florida. Mullen was forced to resort to Anthony Richardson, who would have been better at WR than QB. Smart thought that Beck would either get beaten out or transfer but neither happened. He stuck around and won the job that Smart wanted Vandagriff, Stockton or one of the 5 star QBs that Smart didn't land to win.
But Adams has to pretend this isn't true. Just as he has to pretend that a guy who leads his offense to 4 TDs and 5 scores overall was actually playing poorly until the last drive.
