I notice that you never address the obvious questions I've stated. Who would do significantly better with this team? We've already ruled out Hurley, Pitino and Calipari. You are only addressing half the problem w/o addressing the elephant in the room. But your failure to acknowledge the talent discrepancies only accentuates your lack of objectivity.
Chicken or egg? Coach or talent. 27 and 45. 30 years of underachievement, over multiple eras, is impossible to pin on 1 guy. Sorry.
"Over the last 30 years (approximately 1995–2025), at least 10-12 Georgia Bulldogs basketball players have made it to the NBA", AI. Take away AEdwards and Claxton (both played for Crean) and there is no one of significance. Over 30 years.
Are you really going to compare finding Tubby in1996 to the current situation? Complete apples and oranges. NIL has changed everything. If it was so easy why hasn't UGA done it since? UGA has tried 7 times since then. Each time since then has been the same results. 7 coaching failures since TSmith. Yet very little change in philosophy and financial commitment. That's on the school. TSmith was so enamored with the UGA program he stayed 2 seasons.
FYI TSmith winning % after leaving KY (and all its talent) is 52% same as Mike White's career winning %. Jimmy's and Joe's or so Kirby says.
"Hugh Durham’s roster leftovers and take them to consecutive NCAAs" And White took Donovan's leftovers and was CoY in the SEC.
I get it. You don't think White is the guy to get the UGA program to the next level. It looks like things will stay the same as they have been for the last 30 years unless the school steps up and supports the basketball program similarly to the football program. That's what it takes to win in this era. In my expert opinion it is not rocket science. White is the coach for the foreseeable future. The answer has always been, "get better players" or embrace the status quo.
@UGADad20
With a record of 25-41 in the SEC guess I'll put you down for the "he's not quite abysmal but a couple of shades under mediocre category…thanks for playing.
BTW I didn't pin it on 1 guy so no need to be sorry. As for who would do significantly better, for 4M a year I imagine we would have quite a few applicants applying…
Again you fail to name names. Certainly, theoretically, there are those that would do better in your mind. And maybe so. Marginally better. Until UGA makes the top 10-15 commitment to the basketball program the program will continue to be a bubble team. That's what we have seen from UGA for 30 years.
Some up and coming coach might take the opportunity to coach at a SEC school HOPING that UGA will come around to making a bigger commitment and becoming a contender on a national level. At that point one of 2 things happen. New coach doesn't get the commitment and moves on like Tubby Smith or new coach falls into the same pattern as his 7 predecessors.
I take it that you don't watch much CBB besides UGA. There was an incredible game on last night between #2 Houston and #6 Iowa St. The talent levels, especially in the backcourt but really all over the court (size), were so far superior to what UGA has on its team right now it could not be ignored or denied.
Did you ever think that the reason UGA re-upped White was because they floated the opening out there to other established coaches and were rejected when other coaches asked about the NIL budget and plans for new facilities?
Your singular "25-41" argument hardly proves anything except that there is not enough competitive talent on the UGA basketball roster.
@UGADad20
If I were AD I would have gathered a large bucket of $$$ and did whatever it took to bring on Jim Crutchfield but I recognize 70 year old coaches are not in hot demand. Had we gotten him 5 years ago before we got duped by FU for their reject, I would imagine we would be quite competitive but I detest playing the “if” game. So with that said I would scour the D2 elite programs and start there.
As for your Tubby leaving UGa because he didn’t get the commitment statement, I’ll simply let that brain f a r t statement melt away. Tubby pulled a Kiff, plain and simple. More money, more prestige, nothing else.
I forgot to add…more money, more prestige and hand picked by Pitino to fill his shoes…
We go to Lexington & beat Kentucky 86-78 for the first time since 2009 & the 5th time EVER & no game story?
Yup Tubby couldn't wait to bolt the UGA program for something better. His agent was probably making calls throughout his 2nd year at UGA. Tubby was not Kiffin. Kiffin had turned MS around into a program that had surpassed LSU's success of late. If it was a money issue UGA has money. It was a program issue. What would be more prestigious than turning the UGA program into CBB blueblood? Maybe if UGA made the necessary commitment to the basketball program it wouldn't be widely considered a stepping stone job.
Crutchfield? 70 yo coaches that 95% of HS and CBB players have never heard of are great recruiters. Even Belichick can't recruit to UNC. Never coached above DII. Unproven at DI.
"scour the D2 elite programs and start there". Roll of the dice instead someone that has proven they can win in the SEC. And then don't upgrade the facilities or spend the necessary amount on NIL and you'll just continue the UGA coaching merry-go-round of the last 75 years.
You focus on Whites SEC record at UGA. White's SEC winning % at FU is better than the SEC winning % of 10 of the last 11 (Smith) UGA coaches.
Amazing how much better a coach White is when he has his leading scorer in the game.
As for last night's game, I'll say it here until MG writes his article.
Great gritty win on the road in the SEC vs a more talented team. White outcoached the KY coach. But it was nice for UGA to have their leading scorer back. Having your leading scorer in the game makes a difference even if he is only 6'1".
Some anxious moments in the last 2.5 mins after the flagrant foul shots by Cain. UGA turned it over on the subsequent inbounds then turned it over on an inbounds after a KY basket. In between a UGA G tried to drive for a lay up vs a KY defender 7" taller (missed) and UGA's 5'10" G shot an airball 3 pointer and drove and missed a wild lay up shot. Demonstrating the guard weakness of this UGA team.
But all that's on the coach. SMH
After watching 2 of CBB's better teams face off on Monday (#2 Houston vs #6 Iowa St) and then watching the UGA vs KY game, the talent differences were a stark contrast. The UGA/KY game looked like an NAIA game compared to #2 vs #6 from a talent level. Especially relative to the UGA backcourt play.

BINGO! Another shamefully disgraceful display of journalistic integrity by DawgNation.
I get that football's the Big Dawg in the room—it's my favorite sport, too—but this is a publication that allegedly covers ALL of UGA's major sports, and it's been over a week since the last story on the men's basketball program. Not even a historic ROAD win over SEC blueblood UK last night gets the DawgNation staff off its ass for some game coverage?!
Pathetic.
@UGADad20 you crack me up, I really appreciate your comedic responses. Poor coaching is not the reason for losses but great coaching gets you wins…
UGa has the ball for the final 15 seconds and goes for two with 1 second left trailing by 3, their leading scorer in the game btw, poor facilities and underwhelming talent…coaching had nothing to do with it
UGa is blown out by aTm, Tx, FU, Okie, dadgum poor facilities, number 1 scorer out, noncommittal basketball program, oh and underwhelming talent…coaching had nothing to do with it
UGa with their leading scorer back beats a weaker than average Ky team who's coach vegas has placed odds at 60-40 he won't survive after this season, MM GREAT COACHING…Comedy channel called, you got the job…cheers mate.
@UGADad20 You really should stop commenting on things you know nothing about. Tubby was very happy at UGA, Donna loved Athens. he had told Dooley when he took the job there was one job he would leave for. Kentucky. Hence no buyout. Otherwise we probably have a new arena named the Tub and we prob go to a final four or two in late 90s-early 2000s.
As far as the game last night I give them a lot of credit. Team played well & gave great effort…which has been the biggest issue this season. Talent isn’t a problem…as they said on the Field of 69 podcast “UGA might have a better roster than UK”. You just don’t know what you’re looking at.
