That's the million dollar question that we won't have an answer to until well into the season. I keep going back to Pollack's comment a couple of years ago, and I think it still rings true today:
" Georgia has a bunch of really good players, but not a lot of great…"
I think this is especially true on offense. Who are our elite playmakers on offense? I can't name a single one at this moment that has proven to be a consistent difference maker - especially in the WR room. Some player(s) will have to step up if the Dawgs are going to compete for a Natty. And Gunner will need to take the next step in his passing game.
Klatt is correct that UGA doesn't have a proven playmaker. He's also right that a championship team needs that type of player. The hope is that one of Canion, Humphries, Elyiss Williams, Tayln Taylor, or Scovie White-Helton steps up and takes that role in the offense. It will be interesting to watch early in the season to see whom Gunner trusts when the Dawgs need a receiver to make a play. When UGA won the '21 national championship, they started the season with their top 3 receivers injured. They relied on a freshman named AD Mitchell, a freshman TE named Brock Bowers and a redshirt freshman receiver named Ladd McConkey. They also went through two QBs before Stetson Bennett stepped up and took the job. That's the wonderful thing about college football: these kids get an opportunity to grow and prove themselves over the course of a season.
Well said. Most UGA fans know more about the UGA WR room than Joel Klatt does. He comes off sounding like OSU sour grapes. OSU had 3 1st RD WR's on that team and still lost to UGA. So obviously it is not just about the WR position.
True, UGA has no PROVEN game changing receiver. But UGA has a selection of highly ranked players that could become proven during this season at WR, TE and RB. Multiple former 5* players.
Truth be told the limiting factor on the UGA offense (and most team's offense) is at the QB position.
BTW Joel, Bowers didn't dive for the pylon. He extended the ball down the sideline for the 1st down marker.
Klatt is a consistent doubter, dare I say hater, of UGA and the SEC overall. While he has a point in that I'd love more talent in the WR room, his assertion that you can't win an NC without an elite WR is a stretch. With the possible exception of QB, one position alone is not going to determine a team's ultimate performance. Furthermore, while he mentions Bowers, as others mention it doesn't sound like he assessed our TE room and its the potential game changers. Let's see what a healthy Barbour can do, as well as Prothro, this year!
