Georgia baseball roster update: How things look after MLB draft deadline passes
With the deadline now passed for any MLB draftees to decide on signing or returning to school, the picture for Georgia baseball’s roster ahead of the 2027 season is much clearer.

Catch the ball, throw the ball, hit the ball. Unlike other major sports where “learning the system” matters, in baseball not so much. All you need is 9 superstar athletes on the field and a coach that can motivate them, no playbook required. We’re buying another pretty good team, spend baby spend.
No one has any idea how so many newcomers can quickly become a productive team in such a competitive conference, but hopefully Coach Johnson will work his magic once again. Go Dawgs!

Wonder what Ishikawa was thinking! He would have earned way more in NIL than going to the Cape Cod League.

Stats can be misleading some. Goodman was coming off missing all of 2025 (Tommy John) and was getting his first action of college ball. Still sat 95-96 with fastball and showed good feel for off speed.
Not to mention, South Carolina was a total mess a season ago, so now him getting able to work with Wes Johnson should make for a good comeback 2027 year.
HunterDeLauder—Thanks for the response. Perhaps he can develop in Wes's system. Got some fire at 95 & 96.
It isn't just about finding great athletes and paying up to get guys on the top rankings lists, although I am sure that certainly helps. Lol
It seems like Wes' approach and his staff's approach are to find the right type of hitters best suited for Foley Field. They have consistently targeted big, power hitting sluggers, and they have been excellent at identifying hitters who can come over and increase their production, improve their plate discipline, and improve their approach at the plate. Even the smaller guys they end up signing out of the portal have some good pop in their bats, and end up doing extremely well for our beloved Dawgs.
As far as pitching goes, I do think, much like the AA and the Braves, Wes does look for more athletic pitchers. I don't know how they are able to spend the time to scout so well, find some of these pitchers, and identify so many gems. Especially when you look at a good bit of the arms Wes has added, look at their previous stats, and there really is not much that inspires confidence saying these guys are ready to pitch in the most difficult conference in college baseball.
Even so, these guys come here, work with Wes and his staff, and they tend to improve drastically.
I am so glad Wes is the coach at The University of Georgia, because now you have pitchers from all over the country who are willing to take less money to come and work with Coach Wes, because his track record speaks for itself.
He has done another amazing job re-tooling the Dawgs line-up, and reconstructing the Dawgs pitching staff. I have no idea who Wes is going to choose to start, who the middle relief arms are going to be, who will he have as his best two to three bullpen arms, which guys he is going to convert into starters or vice versa, and what the results will ultimately be, but I do know by now to trust this man's process, because he gets results.
I don't expect this team to jump out the gates on fire, but I do think come conference play this team should start coming together and playing their best ball at the perfect time to make another long run.
They are definitely going to rack up the homeruns, that is one thing I am positive about with this line-up they have put together. One through nine, they have solid pop all up and down this line-up and on the bench as well. Also, the Dawgs being able to keep the vast majority of their bigger commitments was an excellent job, and those pitchers should play a major role over the next two years helping UGA continue to establish themselves as a new perennial powerhouse.
Good times to be a UGA fan, very exciting times, and we should all be grateful we are able to witness such an exciting, well coached, well ran program. Now, of the basketball squad can pick up the pace just a little bit, UGA will be a three-headed monster with Coach Kirby, Coach Wes, and Coach White. Go Dawgs
if only Wes could convince UGa admin and boosters to remodel Foley to the dimensions of Charlie Schwab field and buy players made for that park, win win
