Whereas the Bulldogs have repeated success with other 5-star position players, the quarterback spot remains elusive.

"…..Yet Curtis enters Saturday’s game playing for the opposing Vanderbilt Commodores."
Did Clark Lea just tear a page out of Lane Kiffin's playbook? What's really going on with Mr. Curtis…………?
Kirby does not want to play young Qb's! Fields went from picking splinters out of his behind to Heisman finalists! He would have still been behind Fromm.
Large step from HS ball to SEC. Once you start pinning on those stars the value rises and the ego inflates on most young QBs. A few may rise to their ranked level but by in large most need at least a year of honing their skills and I like KS approach.
What's Kirby's history with National & SEC Championship quarterbacks?
I’ve said this many times that I can’t name a single game we would have won (that we lost) if Fields, Eason, Daniels and Vandagriff had remained at UGA. Most of them were overrated and several of our other recruits like Bennett and Fromm were a bit underrated…..especially Stetson. Go Dawgs and don’t worry about the “stars”!!
Nick Saban made himself the butt on College game day talking about he had Julian Saying on the scout team. It's not an exact science. Joe Burrow couldn't start at OSU. THeres'a show on ESPN where I think Ed Ogeron's son told his dad or mabye it was an assistant coach that they couldn't win a NC with their present QB's but if they could get Joe Burrow from OSU they could! Some people can see it and some people can't.
While a great kid I believe Vander Griff was one of the most overated 5 stars that I know of.
"On Saturday, it will see another one that got away, despite all the resources Georgia plunged into trying to land Curtis."
Curtis is certainly good enough to start for Vandy, just like Dillon Raiola was good enough to start at Nebraska. That doesn't mean he would have been good enough to unseat Stockton as the starting QB at UGA, there is a huge difference between the two programs (reference: Capt. Obvious). He would have been afforded the same opportunity as everyone else and that is to compete for it. He will be even better next year than he is this year (just like Justin Fields), and UGA will be fine with whomever wins the starting QB job next year.
GO DAWGS!
Most of the time Georgia ends up with "game manager" QBs. Their arms are okay, not elite, but their understanding of the game is towards the top. Stafford was drafted back in 2009 as a 1st Rounder. Since then only Murray, Fromm, and Bennett have been drafted and those were 4th & 5th round picks. Overall, it's been slim pickings for Georgia QBs to the NFL.
As long as the Dawgs can keep competing for NCs, I really don't care how good or great our QB is. Stetson was a walk-on, but he had years of exposure to college football and just had a knack of finding ways to win. He also had elite playmakers around him, and an elite defense both years we won NCs. That takes a HUGE load off any QB's shoulders. Just look at Mendoza and Indiana. Their entire team was a great mix of experience and elite playmakers. They made Fernando a better QB.
I haven't been very impressed with our QB backups, and I still believe Kirby will at least try to get an experienced QB from the portal to start next season.
Wow, what a headline. Typical I suppose and definitely not unexpected from the lazy "journalism" that is produced by Connor. Mike, at the very least, writes well and produces good content on a consistent basis. Connor, not so much. And this is one of our beat writers and has been for years.
Enough about curtis and former 5☆ QB's..time to put it in the rear view mirror and move on.
A good reason for Fields rising to a Heisman finalist at tOSU is the system that Ryan Day ran at the time (and may still, as admittedly, I haven't watched Sayin much) which is more of a one read and pull it and run it type of system at which Fields was very good…..At least at UGA, Fields did not have the ability (while he was here) to go to the second and third reads required under Coach Kirby's (and most college's) systems…. if the first read was not open, he ran.
Fromm and Bennett and Stockton, who is getting better at it, all have/had the ability to read the field and were/are allowed to do so under Coach Bobo's system. As @MontanaDawg said:
"Most of the time Georgia ends up with "game manager" QBs. Their arms are okay, not elite, but their understanding of the game is towards the top."
Fields didn't have that "understanding of the game" that Coach Kirby requires, Eason proved he didn't have that at Washington (and his inability to beat out Fromm once he got over his injury) and neither did Daniels (albeit he and Eason being hurt did not help them, since "availability" is most important to Coach Kirby) when trying to unseat Bennett (See Daniels play at West Virginia and Rice).
I don't mind a "game manager" at all….to me it is not a derogatory comment…..Aaron Murray was a "game Manager" and, arguably one of the best we've ever had (still leads the SEC in all time total yards)….Murray just didn't have the defense to help him.
Winning is paramount…..Neither Fields, Eason nor Daniels won it…..Fromm and Murray almost did, Stetson surely did and Stockton has only lost two games while starting.
I like our chances!
Go Dawgs!
It is fascinating that a program as successful as UGA hasn't signed more five-star QBs. UGA offers a QB everything they could want on the field: a great OL, great RBs, great TEs and talented receivers. KS won't do two things: promise playing time and overpay for an unproven player. I believe that combination sways most young five-star QBs to go to other places that may not promise playing time but at least will let a young QB know he can compete. When everything else is equal, the QB can have the biggest impact on a game's outcome. We saw it in the '21 CFP championship game when Stetson made two plays that directly led to TDs that decided the game, and last year when Trinidad Chambliss made plays the Dawgs didn't.
Now it’s not so much recruiting them as it is paying them . Too much money to sit for a few years .
Recruit the players who want to be a Dawg. Forget the rest.
