College football is on the verge of finalizing the expansion of the College Football Playoff field from 12, to 24, teams.

Now we'll start seeing weak 3 and possibly 4 loss teams make the playoffs. And they will be completely embarrassed playing much better teams during the playoffs.
The specifics that stand out to me in this new format should keep the regular season relevant.
1) Seeds 1-8 get a BYE - without having to play in a Conference Championship game. That could be a BIG advantage. Plus, they get a home game on their campus for Round 2. I would call that ample incentive. 2) Seeds 9-24 - home games in 1st round for the higher seeds. Another incentive to land with the right numbered seed, although that is pretty random.
One other thing not mentioned in this article is a requirement for all P4 teams to play (10) games during the regular season against P4 opponents (usually (9) conference games plus another P4 non- conference opponent). Most teams already are doing this but some teams have cancelled future series because they didn't want the harder matchups. Well, some of those games will need to be added back or replacement teams found.
Overall, I think this will be a good change to the format, although I did think (16) teams was the sweet spot. We'll just see how things shake out over the next few seasons.
Lmao....might as well cut back to a BIG10 Covid Season....6 or 7 games.
And go for a 64 Team Playoff.
Or just mirror the College Basketball Formula.
Then....You....the Evil, short sighted morons responsible for all this Greed Satisfaction......can fold all that money nice and tight....and stick it up your rectal canal sideways. Cause, I'm out.
That leaves High School and my Nephew's Little League Team....till they find a way to corrupt those things, like they did the Boy Scouts of America. Lol
Where the hell are the "conscientious, honest....courageous....Adults in the room"? Somebody knows something they aren't telling. We need some Whistleblowers to fix this mess.
And....maybe some curious reporters that know how to dig. If there are any left. Lol
Go get em Big Red. Stay healthy!
You are Spot On my Brother !! All about the big $$$. To heck with the fans and their wishes, there’s $$ to be made !! The powers that be Know we Love Dawgs football So much as other fans love their teams. They know they can take advantage of us ALL !!
ESPN is a business. Their Total objective is make as much $$ as they Can, All the time. They could care less how fans feel. Though they will Pretend that the fans are their sole concern. Uh Huh . Sure, sure Rrrrrright. 🙄
They can only take advantage if people decide to continue eating the slop and continue watching.
It clearly is about revenue stream, and I suspect the gambling businesses have a big part to play. Gambling addiction is running rampant in this country, particularly with young men. More playoff games wll offer hundreds of permutations to gamble on for those games. Plenty of middle men getting their cut, but not hearing a peep about the wagering issue. One of many issues.
@dirtroaddawg , @BigDawg61, @navydawg ....guys, ESPN is actually making a bit of a sacrifice in $$ to make this work. Each conference is receiving well over $100M to give upntheir CC games. Sure, ESPN will benefit majorly in the long run, but the biggest backers and pushers of this 24-team format has actually been the college Presidents & Administrations. They need these playoffs to be broad enough that allows their schools to potentially make the playoffs which will increase their school's market value to players...and increase their school's revenue potential. So hopefully more schools in the playoffs brings broader benefits to more schools.
I have a tough time mustering empathy for the "sacrifice" ESPN makes.
Your point on the coaches and admin is accurate, but to what end? Put a load of teams in that have essentially zero chance of anything except getting blown out in the first round? All so they can say they made the playoffs? Watered down playoffs that are akin to a participation trophy with a cash bonus? It seems to be just a little fantasy game that fans are expected to play along with, all in the name of increased revenue ,created by people that have no regard for the fans or the history and tradition of CFB.
The argument that the schools need the revenue to pay salaries of the employed players is empty. If the powers that be had done anything, anything at all to prevent wide open free agency and wholesale purchase of players, we wouldn't need the argument that we should destroy the CFB system to generate more revenue to continue the madness. Call it what it is, employed players in a minor league pro system, with less rules than the NFL has in place.
I am surprised at the amount people carrying water for the folks that are fundamentally altering the game/character/traditions and that will reap money from its destruction. I just do not understand it.
I can remember back in the day when actually had to have a good team just to make a decent bowl game. Now with 45+ bowl games, and a 24 team playoff field, almost every team is guaranteed at least a bowl appearance. Even 5 and 6 win teams have a shot at a bowl game now.
When you actually..
@dirtroaddawg...Understand your points but i might push back a bit. I am a UGA Alum, but I live in NW Montana. I do watch and follow some of the FCS 24-team playoffs and do follow the Griz and Cats. The fans here are just as passionate and dedicated as any Dawg fan. The playoffs are pretty exciting and it definitely hasn't " watered down" the regular season.
The NFL expanded their playoffs, added more regular season games and playoff teams. More fans watching than ever.
I am not going to fight the system. It is what it is. But I think the biggest threat to college football is the lack of legally enforceable rules and regulations...not lack of fan interest.

Respectfully, understand your points but they have little to do with what I stated, and do not impact the points I made nor how I and many others view it. I have never been good at just not "fighting the system" when it tries to force feed me things I do not agree with. It's all good though Montana. We are all different with our own preferences and views. Appreciate the discourse. Have a good weekend and Go Dawgs.
@dirtroaddawg...America is all about greed and making money...whatever way we can. We can try and justify it or spin it however you want. We've already been participating in a watered down post season for many years in what we call " bowl season". The 40+ bowl season is ridiculous and nothing but a money grab and gives undeserving teams " trophies" for going barely above .500. So, this is all nothing new. Now we're just calling it the playoffs and hopefully the rest of the participation non-cfp bowls will die.
You may not understand it, but it's nothing but capitalism gone wrong. Whether it's paying for players or teacher's salaries, every college wants a bigger piece of this money merry-go-round.
Oh I understand "it", what I don't understand is rolling over and accepting it without at a minimum calling it out. That is just tacit agreement. No need to justify or spin it, evidence is in plain site. And yes, the destruction/dilution or any verb or adjective you choose has been ongoing, and each person has their own limits in what is acceptable. Some have no limits. To say there is nothing new, in light of free agency, pure pay for play, portal madness, the pending loss of division championships, the downgrading of traditional rivalries and neutral sites for those games, and now the ridiculous expansion of "playoffs" to 24 when there are likely 12 or less teams each year than can expect to actually compete for a spot in the championship is a take I cannot see.
They took a less than ideal system and deregulated it without building anything in its place. That's not reform. That's just a different flavor of dysfunction — with the players holding more cash and less stability, corporate entities making more, and a part of the fan population be damned. Rivalries are being gutted, ticket prices are up, donor fatigue is becoming real, and education is an afterthought. Some call it progress.
To each his own. I will happily follow the Dawgs this year then bow out.
I5 may be a sacrifice now....but....It's an investment with a huge payoff at the other end. No different than any other Company's portfolio. They invest $$ to grow & gain $$$$$$$.
Lol....nobody's taking a loss here.…but, the Fans.
Lolol....you think ESPN/ABC/DISNEY manipulate outcomes now?....Just wait!. Hype begets, National Attention...which begets covetous Recruits [talent].
The free Advertisement & Hyperbole those people provide to only certain Institutions feed the Talent Pool of those schools. And keep it fed in some cases....like Notre Dame and OSU.
And, now...Alabama & Nick Saban are covered by their biased umbrella.. They can do no wrong. Ridiculous! What did Saban.…the oracle of CFB...say last week?
The all-knowing Football Guru of ESPN said that, "Alabama would dominate UGA". Did it feel that way to yall? Lol.
