Our Next Coach Will Be Between Thad Matta and Ron Harper

If Harper wins on Friday, which I highly doubt, and Matta declines offer, then it will be Harper.

I'm thinking Matta is not going to coach at UGA but I hope I'm wrong. I hear a lot of people saying that Louisville is the top destination, but they are facing the NCAA death penalty. I think he will wait to see what openings become available as a result of FBI investigation. If I'm McGarity, and Matta puts the school on hold in case of a better offer, then I would tell him to go and kick rocks. However, this hire, IMO, will make or break McGarity at UGA.

My source tells me that Matta will be named by Thursday or Friday. And Jonas will be retained on staff.

By Harper do you mean Ron Hunter at Ga State?

Side note: Ron Harper is RJ Hunter's godfather. Maybe that's what he was thinking?

The more I think about it, the more I think UGA makes sense for Matta. His brother is here, he will command/demand support from the admin and get it, the warmer climate is better for him and he does not have to go far to recruit. On top of that, the shots Fox took on the way out can only put more pressure on McGarity to spend/support the team.

I was a student at Ohio University when Ron Hunter and Ron Harper played together at Miami of Ohio. Their coach Darrel Hedric had a pretty good career defeating both Bobby Knight and Dean Smith on the road which is impressive for a MAC school.

Harper was a terrific player that we enjoyed heckling from the student section my first two years before I started working at the scorers table as a Sports Information Office Volunteer. He had a nice NBA career with the Cavs and earned a few rings with the Bulls.

Former O$U coach Randy Ayers played at Miami just a few years earlier under Hedric.
