I wanna like Chip Towers but..

I’m a HUGE fan of every other reporter on DawgNation and what they’ve done but no matter what, I just can’t seem to bring myself to like Chip.. And it’s not for lack of trying... There’s so many reasons why, too. For one, he just comes off as extremely petty and childish, especially ever since Kirby Smart called him out at that one press conference, it’s just seemed like he’s had this personal vendetta against KS, and like he tried to seize every potential negative narrative that he can whenever he’s been presented with one. Also, I know this could be seen as minor by some, but as an English major, I just can’t help but notice that he always has the most errors in his work when held in comparison to his colleagues. Trivial to some, sure, but to me, personally, it just seems to reveal a lowered degree of respect for his work. And finally, I kind of touched on this with my first point but it just seems really unprofessional how he lets his emotions color his work in a negative way, even with how he interacts with the viewers throughout most of his “Towers’ Takes”.. He always comes off as combative against any and every viewer that has something even the slightest bit negative to say... Just ignore their comments instead of stooping down to the level of the trolls. You’re a professional. Maybe act like it and stay focused on your journalism? I, and I’m sure many of you, have literally witnessed him rant for 5+ minutes about the most insignificant negative things that his viewers have had to say in the past.

I love Jeff, he’s brilliant, and an amazing journalist. He’s amazing at his job and at collecting valuable intel for all of us. Mike sees the strategic maneuvers of CKS for what they are and you can really tell. Brandon has to grow on me but you can’t help but love the guy for his personality and dedication. I don’t know much about Connor but he seems likeable enough considering everything I’ve seen thus far, at least, but for some reason(s) I just can’t bring myself to foster the same sort of appreciation for Chip and I genuinely hate to say it because I do believe he’s a legitimate fan of the team and the brand as a whole, just like myself. Okay, rant over.. I’ve been holding back this one for awhile with hope that maybe my feelings about this would change, but alas, my dislike for him has only developed further, unfortunately, and I feel like I can’t be the only one that views him in this way.

No, I’m not, just blew chunks cause I have a severe migraine and am half out of it. I figured someone would comment on that after I wrote it but I digress.. I don’t think this is putting him on the spot any more than what we do any other day with anyone else on this forum. It’s just my opinion and I honestly believe I was pretty cordial and non aggressive or inappropriate about it. It is what it is and you’re absolutely right, I can and I do pass over his articles most of the time. I was merely curious as to what other people felt about him, professionally and/or personality wise, in comparison to his colleagues.. I’m not trying to be rude or insensitive at all, so I apologize if I come off that way. I just don’t think that’s an ‘out of line’ question to ask.

First off I miss Chip Towers' recruiting column. He did great work, from identifying underrated prospects, suggesting that some prospects were overrated, analyzing which out of state schools were doing the best grabbing Georgia talent, tracking players from high school programs to the NFL, and even identifying Atlanta area kids that were going to smaller schools. It was a great combination of investigative reporting, statistics, interviewing recruiting coordinators and analysts, reviewing film etc. that I have ever seen associated with the AJC.

Second, Towers is just doing his job. The AJC is a newspaper, not a fan site. There are plenty of SB Nation, Bleacher Report, Fansided etc. type outlets that are going to cheerlead for UGA and put a pro-Bulldogs spin on everything. But that isn't journalism. Someone has to be the bad guy, to challenge the coaches and the administration - and in the process challenge the fanbase. And if you ask me, even Towers doesn't go far enough. The New York, Philadelphia and Boston media, for example, would have long ago pointed out that Mark Richt never won a truly big game that affected the national title picture during his tenure at UGA. They were just a speed bump on the road for LSU, Florida, Alabama and Auburn teams who did. And the NYC, Philly, D.C. and Boston media also would have gone nuts over the LSU debacle and the playcalling/critical decisions in the two 'Bama losses. Maybe it is a cultural thing, maybe because they are primarily professional sports cities instead of college ones, and also because no single team dominates a region the way that UGA football dominates this state (NYC for instance has 2 NFL teams, 2 NBA teams, 2 MLB teams and a hockey team, all with their devoted fanbases, yes even the Mets) they are quick to call out coaches and players in a way that never gets done in this state.

I like Chip , as well as all the other DN beat reports... they all bring something different and all together additive .... esp like new guy Mike Griffith

I met Chip at the **** Kroger event this year. Nice guy, and he’s been loyal to UGA, his school. He has a job to do and a different role than BA or even us as fans. I respect his work and know he loves the Dawgs.

I agree 100% chip has a negative tone to almost everything he writes.

The thing you have to understand about Chip is that he's old school. Until recently it was considered poor taste to be a total homer for the team you covered, especially if you're an alum. Look at Barnhart; he's a lot more annoying about trying to bury any hint of homerism than Chip. Hell I remember when Emerson took over the UGA beat from Hale maybe? A lot of people thought he wasn't Pro-UGA enough, yet now people look back on his former days with nostalgia now that's he's been onto bigger things for awhile.

Point is: Chip is from the days of editors, deadlines, real sources, and interviews rather than Twitter. Those things don't really exist much anymore. It's all about getting as much content out as quickly as possible. There obviously aren't proofreaders anymore and that's not a DN or AJC thing. I see typos and misplaced words on most every site including the big ones. Chip is doing pretty well at adapting I'd say.

The problem is that people really don't want news anymore. Why read or listen to someone at least attempting to be impartial when there are any number of outlets that will curate and spin just the stories you want from your "side"?

Let’s be honest... he comes off pessimistic, yes... it he did live through some years (from a coach that will go unnamed) that were hyped up and then deflated as the year went on... it is understandable that he has been jaded over time.

Let’s not let said coach lose control of this thread...

I wrote something similar about a year ago. I dont want a homer, but he always seems to be a glass half empty type writer. Dont hate him, he's just my least favorite.

Just so long as a reporter isn’t try8ng to sell me something I’m good with him. And Chip Towers definitely ain’t a salesman.

I’ve caught Chip’s Tower’s Take show on the DawgNation YouTube channel a few times. He’s a little stiff, but it’s very watchable.much better than most stuff on YouTube. I completely disagreed with him at first about the Justin stuff. But I was able to watch him talk a long time about it without getting the least bit annoyed. And it’s not always easy listening to people you disagree with. Especially if they’re a salesman.
