No. 17 Florida at Georgia

sethemersonsethemerson Posts: 686 ✭✭✭✭ Senior

OK, time for another basketball thread. As I've done lately, I'll offer updates and analysis as Georgia tries to upset the Gators and get the win the Bulldogs badly need to get back on stride.

Factors in Georgia's favor: They've been playing well lately, just haven't closed the deal; they played well enough in the first game in Gainesville to get to overtime; the Gators are playing their third game in seven days, and on the road.

Factors not in Georgia's favor: This is Georgia basketball we're talking about.

Not may here at Stegeman as tip-off nears. Doesn't help that it was raining very hard, which seems to have especially scared off the students.

And of course any mid-week game in Athens is going to be a tough draw. Just not enough of a local population base. Saturday home games do so much better here.

Tied at 5 at the first media timeout Both teams struggles to shoot, and Georgia doing some silly things on offense: Taking bad shots early in the possession, the normally-reliable Yante Maten just made a poor entry pass that became a turnover. Yuck.

Florida takes a 19-9 lead and Mark Fox calls timeout. The Gators are in the midst of a 19-4 run.

Bad on both ends right now for Georgia, which continues to rush shots, and isn't fast enough on defense. J.J. Frazier is scoreless, really having trouble getting off clean shots against Florida's length. The Bulldogs are 4-for-16 from the floor and have yet to get to the free throw line.

Tyree Crump in the game early. And he hits a 3 to make it 21-12.

Tell me again why he doesn't play more?

Florida has made 7 of its last 8 shots, including two straight 3s and now leads 29-14.

Yeah, it got **** quick here. Georgia just has to try to pull back in this gradually, and hope Florida's legs catch up with them soon. They are playing very fast.

Some life for Georgia now, as a 7-0 run cuts it to 30-21. J.J. Frazier finally in the scoring column as he hits a 3 on the break, causing Mike White to call timeout.

There's a lot of time left in this one, and as I said earlier, the hope for Georgia is that Florida starts to wear out. But it can't stay too far behind and just hope that happens.

Good: Pape Diatta hits a 3 to make it a 6-point game.

Bad: Yate Maten picks up his second foul, on an offensive clear-out, reminiscent of the game down in Gainesville. Mark Fox not pleased.

OK, so Georgia has already made it a one-point game, now on a 15-0 run, with J.J. Frazier leading the way. And still five minutes left in the first half.

  • sethemersonsethemerson Posts: 686 ✭✭✭✭ Senior

Interesting late in that run: Frazier signaled to be taken out of the game after missing a shot. He was obviously winded from the 15-0 run, during which he had eight points. But play continued and he couldn't come out. Georgia had three possessions to try to take the lead but couldn't, now Florida heading to the line.

Still, much credit to the Bulldogs for that comeback.

Yante Maten goes back in with two fouls, and promptly has to come back out because of blood near his eye. That was after a drive in which he thought he was fouled but nothing was called.

  • sethemersonsethemerson Posts: 686 ✭✭✭✭ Senior

Halftime: Florida 35, Georgia 33. The home fans are happy as the teams leave the floor, considering the comeback. Georgia briefly tied it a couple times, and it's anyone's game at the break - after Georgia had trailed by 16.

No home favoritism from the refs yet, as Georgia only had two free throw attempts, and Florida had eight. Two Georgia starters (Maten and Jackson) with two fouls.

Maten also didn't play the final few minutes of the half after taking that shot to the face. Assuming it was just a flesh wound, he'll be back for the second half.

  • sethemersonsethemerson Posts: 686 ✭✭✭✭ Senior

Yante Maten had to get stitches in his lip at halftime, but he's out there playing as the second half begins.

  • sethemersonsethemerson Posts: 686 ✭✭✭✭ Senior

Mark Fox was about 10 steps on to the court just now trying to get the officials' attention to call timeout. And that was AFTER a Maten 3, Georgia's first points of the half. Kinda strange, as Fox refers to those timeouts as "precious" but something was bothering him enough that he wanted one.

  • sethemersonsethemerson Posts: 686 ✭✭✭✭ Senior

Mark Fox suit jacket-off point: 16:13 of second half, after Georgia was called for its fourth foul of the half. Florida hadn't been called for any yet.

  • sethemersonsethemerson Posts: 686 ✭✭✭✭ Senior

Double technical foul called on Georgia's Pape Diatta and Florida's Devin Robinson. It looked like they jawed at each other before a timeout.

  • sethemersonsethemerson Posts: 686 ✭✭✭✭ Senior

Georgia already with seven fouls and Florida in the bonus with 14:54 left in regulation. Three fouls on Florida.

The only good news for Georgia in that is that fouls and free throws are so tilted in Florida's favor right now that the officials could try to even it out.

  • sethemersonsethemerson Posts: 686 ✭✭✭✭ Senior

Florida has raced back out to a 48-38 lead, with Canyon Berry hitting two free throws and then a 3, forcing Fox to call timeout with 14:22 left. Some bad passes by Georgia really helped this run.

Fox's time has run its course. He continues to play turtle Jackson. I understand his thinking by letting turtle handle the point can be the primary scorer but turtle cannot run an offense! Just put the best players on the court. That would be Frazier, crump and Harris along with Maten and anyone else

  • sethemersonsethemerson Posts: 686 ✭✭✭✭ Senior

Florida's tired, but Georgia can't take advantage yet. Yante Maten seems to be pressing a bit, rushing some shots. Tyree Crump is in, just missed a long 3. Georgia down by 8, needs a run here soon.

  • sethemersonsethemerson Posts: 686 ✭✭✭✭ Senior

J.J. Frazier, with a chance to cut it to four, instead only hit one. Then KeVaughn Allen hit a 3 on the other end, and a couple fans in front of me got up and left.
