Monken puts it simply but his plan is complex. Perfecting the option is his game. He is quite adept at it. He is also saying skilled players are needed...Newman and the RB stable are a must to keep the "balance" of ground and aerial. George Pickesn will set records if this thing pans out with UGA this season. LSU proved it works. Plus Monken is a Joe Brady with his Air Raid. This more versatile. balanced attack works....with the right players. You will see first hand! UGA has the right players if anyone does. Exciting!
How can your write a story on the offensive coordinators impact on the running game at UGA and not mention that that OC, Todd Monken, coached UGA product Nick Chubb last season and Chubb finished second in rushing in the NFL for the Cleveland Browns? In fact, if he'd gained 40 more yards in the final game he would have taken the rushing crown. So, yeah, Monken has no problem in using the rushing game to the max.
Yep, here's what we've learned in the past. When we had no real passing threat, we could not run. Period. We had some of the best backs around and yet they couldn't go anywhere? Why? Oline? Maybe. But the real thing is this - teams realized that we couldn't/wouldn't pass and so they stacked the line. When they did that and we tried a simple running play it failed. That's what happens when you play tough college teams. To run you MUST be able to pass. If we turn into a passing team, our RBs will have a field day.
If UGA has a season to begin with, and if Kirby will trust Monken to do what needs to be done. In this day and age, defenses stack the box against run now and run always offenses. The potential is there, to get to a more wide open play calling. The proof of that is to be seen.
We couldn't throw last season because DBs squatted on the only route Fromm could handle - the back-shoulder. All season long and on nearly every single play, TEs and slots were wide open over the middle. For some reason, Fromm forces something to the sideline instead. A good QB and probably a good locker room leader, but he was lucky to get drafted and will never earn a legit start. Bring on Brock!
@DAWGeyes , LOL you make a good point! However, I don't care what he wears(well almost; no Blue & Orange allowed in the press box) as long as he can bring us an offense that can average 35 to 40 points a game....

I would think the fact that Monken is even here is a pretty clear indicator that Smart will trust him to manage the offense. Otherwise, why not just stick with Coley? Not saying he's going to strut around calling plays like he owns the joint. But I think moving on from Coley after 1 season shows that Smart is willing to leave behind what wasn't working and make the necessary adaptations. I'm going to have to see the evidence before I become concerned that it'll just be more of the same under Monken.
