If you’ve followed the Georgia Bulldogs long enough, you’ll remember the name of Willie Martinez. He’s a former beleaguered defensive coordinator at UGA, and of the few assistants that Mark Richt fired during his lengthy tenure as head coach of the Bulldogs. My memory of Willie was the slo-mo replay CBS showed of him throwing his clipboard in the air in exasperation after Tennessee burned our defense with their hundredth huge gain on a fullback screen.

A fullback/tightened screen was like a David Copperfield magic trick to any Willie Martinez-coached team. They couldn’t believe their eyes, no matter how many times they’d seen it.

Poor Poor Willie. He sure wasn't no Coach Russell on defense.

That 2008 game against Tennessee sealed his fate but the secondary got burned like that game after game many times before. Truly frustrating.

Willie Martinez. Good grief. One thing is for sure. You will see a lot of Tennessee corners running wind sprints behind the opposing team's wide receivers. The Youth Pastor burned years of goodwill to keep his buddy Willie on staff after the 2008 season.

My favorite memory of Willie besides getting fired, was watching him run down the sidelines with his arms out like an 8 year old boy playing airplane when UGA squeaked out a win against Mississippi State in 2006.

Look at Willie in the pic. One of his players just asked him, "What do we do now, Coach?"

Sort of like a Dan Mullen "wheel route." Hey, betcha you've never seen this before.
