Challenges mount for No. 1 Georgia: Two captains out, potential QB controversy brewing
ATHENS — Georgia football will be missing two of its team captains for the foreseeable future and has a quarterback situation brewing toward controversy.

It's only 15 games to win it all. 12 reg, sec, semi, finals.
Fate is throwing the kitchen sink at this team. To navigate all of this is going to take a truly outstanding focus and management of the program, the full extent of which will very likely go unacknowledged by most outside the program and its fans. But I, for one (or should I say, as one among many), believe they are up to the task.
Dawgnation writers seem to be throwing the "R" word around indiscriminately. I believe no charges have been filed and that the player is being investigated for sexual assault. In all the accounts published so far there has been no mention of force or threat of injury. Deliberately using certain inciting terms is reckless "journalism". Something we have grown accustomed to out of the Dawgnation "journalists".
Sounds like ole Mike is trying to stir things up so he'll get some attention. Please send him an email and tell him you're thinking of him. It'll make him feel warm and cuddley.
“QB controversy”…..I don’t think so. Please trust our coaches to make the correct decisions. Right now according to ESPN and Brandon Adams (yesterday) we have the 4th most efficient offense in the country with Bama #2. Also, according to Chip Towers and the NCAA (both this week), Stetson Bennett would be #3 in QB rating if he threw 18+ passes each week, but he doesn’t have to pass because we are so far ahead of everyone at halftime. BTW….those ratings don’t consider a QB’s ‘rushing’ prowess and we all know it’s one of Stetson’s greatest strengths. If JT starts tomorrow it will be his 6th straight start against a SEC opponent with a losing record. On the flipside, the Mailman has started against Florida twice, Auburn twice, Kentucky twice, Arkansas once (but he rescued us last year when he didn’t start) and he started against arguably the best Bama team in history on their home field and performed better than Justin Fields or Ian Book did in their neutral field games. I’m not saying SB is better than JT, but I am saying we need to have confidence in our coaches because they know light years more than you, me and all the readers on this site about who the best players are on our team. So please quit perpetuating this “QB controversy” issue when you don’t have a clue as to what takes place behind the scenes at practices. Go Dawgs!!!
Making the Nolan Smith comment into a "potential quarterback controversy" is a stretch at best and downright fabrication, at worst. You have taken a positive comment of support for a teammate and attempted to make it into something negative. Come on Mike, your articles are going to get read without the exaggeration and hot air claims.
Freaking awesome perspectives. Well said, couldn’t agree more. Kirby and Monken will make the right calls… go Dawgs.
Damnit Mike, just stop it. It is almost like you are trying your best to create problems on the team. I have lost what little respect I had for your writing. I will not be reading anymore of your sloppy, manipulative writing in the future.
I am sure that if JT was playing, that would be his qb also. I am sure that hasn’t been a national title winner that hasn’t had to deal with some kind of adversity. These are kids you know.
Mike, 2 things. Stop stirring up controversy and stay off the Finebaum show.
Spew venom and hatred toward the author of the piece (and then vehemently claim not to pay him any attention) all you won't, but Mike raises some valid concerns. Adam Anderson is a projected first-round draft pick. His absence (as the result of a non-football related situation) is problematic. So is the absence, even if temporary, of the teams' top offensive lineman. These are problems. They're not insurmountable problems, but they are problems that we'd rather not have. As for the quarterback: call it a controversy, an issue, a dilemma, whatever your term, it's not cool. Regardless of who fans feel is the better QB, the fact that the job remains unsettled this deep into the season (remember that last week James Cook said he didn't even know who was going to start against Florida and he was at practice every day) is not good. That's not Mike's fault for pointing it out. And he's totally correct about Nolan Smith. He offered a defense of Stetson Bennett when no one even asked him a question about Bennett. And he admitted that he was basing his comments off stuff he had read. So that's a sign that the debate has crept its way into the Dawg's locker room, enough so that at least one team leader -- a defensive player at that -- felt the need to address it without being prompted. All that to say, these "distractions," if you will, while perhaps not fatal to the Dawgs' championship aspirations, are not helping. Blame Mike Griffith if it makes you feel better, but he ain't the problem. Go Dawgs!
Look at what happened to the Braves and the obstacles they overcame. DAWGS can do the same!!
Spinning the comment from Smith regarding Bennett is bush league journalism. He would have said that if it was Beck or Vandagriff or even Muschamp. The man supported his teammate after a rough outing.
But here’s the bottom line of bottom lines. Either choose to trust Kirby or choose not to trust Kirby. Media and fans can speculate, commentate, regurgitate, pontificate, exaggerate, constipate, and get irate, then recycle all of those !! And you know how much it’s gonna change Kirbys one game at a time plan ?? Zero, Nada, Zilch, Zero. Oh sure I know it’s all part of the fun, discussing all facets, putting it all under the microscope, etc. etc. But in the end you either believe Kirby AND his very strong coaching staff know what their doing or you don’t . IF these Dawgs are truly elite and by that I mean Coaches & Players they will Find a way to win. I Believe that Kirby and these Dawgs will do just that. If you allow it to all these problems or distractions or what ever will make you sick !! And it can tarnish the Fun your supposed to be having !! Don’t lose the game in your mind before it’s even played !! Media will always use much more negatives than they do positives. Don’t believe that just turn on the Evening or Morning news whichever you prefer. There’s just something about us humans we seem to Want to hear or read all the negativity. I’m no different !! I have to battle it !! It’s a near constant fight to. But don’t let it take you down !! Dawgs have been riddled with injuries all season. Yet they have won. And just look at the scores they have won by !! Now some one will say BUT. But what ?? There’s not a single team the Dawgs can’t beat. And if they do that it will serve to Prove the Elite Title. If they don’t then we’ll just have to say well they were pretty good but not elite. But if the Dawgs win it all then there won’t be a soul that can say and Be Honest that they didn’t deserve it. Will be undisputed. And any disputes won’t hold water when one Does consider all this team has been through. I’m Believing in the Dawgs and Kirby !! Go Dawgs !!
@MikeGriffith
There is no quarterback controversy. Write about something worth reading, please. 😉
