They're all in charge of their own destiny. That's why Smart and Saban put so much stock in character. They've let a lot of talented players and recruits go, over the years after it's established that their character has been weighed, measured and found wanting.
I'm not saying Burton is or isn't one of those players, but, consider this...he is the first one to go from UGA to UGA's archenemy in the West. Of the 3 players the Dawgs signed last year, only 1 came from the SEC...and he had to sit out a year. Also, he came from a team in the West that UGA plays only 3 or 4 times in a decade. They've played BAMA 5 times in 5 years. Twice in the National Championship, twice in the SEC Championship and once in the regular season. Burton was part of 3 of those games. That's a lot different than Gilbert, Smith or Kendrick. UGA Players, both former and present don't take kindly to that move...I guarantee you.
That being said, UGA is better off without him and I'm happy BAMA has to deal with it. I know everybody's put off by his treachery, but, seriously...outside of the insistence of revisionist historians, he's just an average to above average reciever. He had way more targets this year than he ever would have had if Pickens, K Jackson, A Smith and A Gilbert were healthy. Adonai Mitchelll is a much better reciever as a Freshman than Burton was and is more than capable of carrying Burton's share of the load next year. With track star recruit Chandler Smith and track star Arian Smith at WR, UGA will stretch the field.
I'm not worried on little bit about UGA's WR room next year, but, I do question Terrance Edward's influence over the likes of Justin Robinson, Jermaine Burton and Arik Gibert as their WR Tutor. What is he doing to these kids that confuses them so much? Smart needs to be wary of Edwards' protégés going forward.
Burton is moving to a team with young highly rated prospects at the receiver position. Sure they did not look all that great the other night but Burton is going to have his hands full trying to be #1 or 2 receiver in that squad. He earned his play at Georgia and was established as the #1 or 2 guy next year. I'm sure Stetson coming back secured his decision. However, I personally do not think Stetson is going to be the starter. Brock Vandagriff will be the qb next year and the whole dynamic of the offense is going to change and who knows how many targets our top 3 receivers will get. At Alabama, if he ain't the top 2 then he'll at best have about the same stats he had this year. Burton will have to earn his time at Alabama.
One more thing, if these kids are transferring to get NFL attention, the attention they're getting may not be considered to be positive. Calvin Johnson, widely considered to be one of the best WR's of all time, played for GT in the triple option and was only targeted 5 or 6 times a game. He was drafted #2 overall. NFL scouts know what they're looking for in talent and character. They don't need miles of film and 1000 targets or rushes or tackles or blocks...etc.. If that's why these kids are transferring, and Jermaine Johnson's Dad said as much, then it's ill-advised and unnecessary, especially for a starting reciever.
There has to be an academic or disciplinary reason for Burton's transfer to make sense to NFL prospective player evaluators. If he turned his back on his UGA "Brothers" after winning a Championship, to get more playing time and film....that won't play well in interviews. I think that's what Hardman was referring to with the tweet.
D Rob is the cautionary tale. If Burton thinks he can improve his stock, more power to him. I think Milton should keep his mouth shut until he can stay healthy for more than 2 games at a time. He'll be the man next year so he has a perfect chance to back it all up. Social Media is not anyone's friend. Stetson was wise to tune it out. Sadly, most can't.
Alabama has recruited nine 4* or 5* wr's over the last 2 cycles. Burton better bring his A game. I wonder how those 9 wr's feel about AL bringing in a guy over them who expects to start? UGA will have KJackson, AD, McConkey, ASmith, Blaylock and hopefully Gilbert next season. Plus Meeks and the freshmen. Strong room.
Calvin Johnson did not play in the triple option what are you talking about. His head coach was Chan hailey and his qb was Reggie ball. Paul Johnson the triple option head coach at tech coached demaryius Thomas who became a first rd pick at wr. I would also point out that Chan gailey signed demaryius. One thing about some football fans is they love to prove they know nothing about the game but Go Dawgs!
This is not intended to bash the kid at all, but here goes.
First of all his “response” didn’t clarify anything…other than some non-football issues.
Secondly, this young fella has some soul-searching to do, and hopefully he is able to find some of the answers he’s looking for. There is a lot of compensating going on that’s meant to mask some pretty serious insecurities. All you have to do is watch.
I hope Burton's "business decision" pays off. The competition's going to be equal, and now he's going to be starting over learning a new offense. I hope he doesn't stay injured half of the time like he has at UGA. Otherwise, this decision could backfire. Best of luck to the kid...
This became anyone's business who follows UGA Football when Burton accepted a scholarship to play football in Athens. I'm not feeling particularly magnanimous about his transfer. Hoping the Dogs destroy Alabama, to borrow Lewis Cine's words, every opportunity we get to meet the Tide.
I ask Dawgs fans to be invested in the program and not individual players. Soon college football will be like college basketball where you don't know who is coming or going. Once you learn the names of the players on the roster, you have a lot of turnover with personnel. Look at the Georgia basketball team from last year to this year.
Proud to have Mecole Hardman as a Dawg alumnus! Believe he was Coach Kirby's first recruit and has always been a "shouter from the mountaintop" as to all things Dawgs! Much success, young man! DGD!
Go Dawgs!
