Kirby Smart doubles down on Georgia quarterback room day after Arch Manning commits to Texas
ATHENS —It didn’t take long for Kirby Smart to double-down on the Georgia quarterback room after Arch Manning chose Texas over Smart’s Bulldogs on Thursday.

The Dawgs QB room is very underrated and that starts with Bennett.
We have plenty of talent at the QB position. There is reality and then there is media hype. Dawgs will do just fine with what they’ve got. Just glad the Manning saga is over for him and everyone else. Focus should be on the Quack Attack.
Big passing numbers aren’t necessarily as valued as consistency and mobility, with Smart wanting a certain look and feel at the position.
What look and feel does Kirby want at the quarterback position?
Go, Dawgs!
MG,
Don’t forget that this time last year those amazing geniuses at Athlon and Lindy’s didn’t pick any of our defensive players to do anything. Hmmmmm, how did that work out? Go Dawgs!!!
@BubbaBill Great point, USA Today didn't have any UGA offensive or defensive players first-team preseason All-SEC.....
Everyone should take these QB room forecasts with a huge grain of salt. Remember that last summer, not a single defensive starter was selected to the preseason all-conference team. The 5 first round draft picks proved how wrong those forecasts can be. GA will be fine at QB.
Apparently consistency and mobility. That sums up SBIV last year. Consistency in experience over Beck and in availability over JTD. And SBIV was praised for his mobility by CKS last season. He could elude pressure at times despite 5 sacks vs AL in the CFBCG.
For all the Manning accolades, between Archie, Peyton, and Eli, they led their teams to one conference championship. Stets may never win any Golden Arm awards as Peyton and Eli, but if careers are measured by championships, Stets wins that one and it’s not even close!
No doubt, Arch is likely going to follow in his uncles footsteps when it comes to Golden Arm awards, while it is much more likely that there is a QB in the Dawg’s quarterback room that will be hoisting a NC trophy. I will definitely take the latter!
“Smart did note that Georgia has not had the quarterback who started the season-opening game finish the season as a starter since Jake Fromm's three years leading the program from 2017-2019.”
Jacob Eason started the 2017 season opener vs App State.
should Kirby start crying about missing Arch or support his qbs and keep choping.
Someone who can hand the ball to the RB without fumbling it during the handoff
I was never thinking we would get AM so I can honestly say, I'm not dissapointed. If his last name wasn't Manning then no one on here (if there are any) would be dissapointed. Go Dawgs!
Kind of simple. Every time Kirby has had a choice, he has gone with "safe" over "talent."
Jake Fromm over Jacob Eason
Jake Fromm over Justin Fields
SB IV over Dwan Mathis
SB IV over JT Daniels
This has worked out fine for Kirby and UGA. But Eason, Fields, Mathis and Daniels not so much.
Often elite talent QBs have learning curves where they have to adapt to the college game. Matt Stafford, Peyton and Eli Manning, Russell Wilson: not great their freshman years. Took Charlie Ward several years to finally catch on, and the same with Vince Young and Jason Campbell. Joe Burrow was unable to win the starting job at Ohio State and was only good, not great, his first year at LSU. Andrew Luck struggled his first year at Stanford, especially on the road. Robert Griffin III took 2 years to figure out the "should I throw on this play or run" dilemma at Baylor. And so on. Often elite QBs get used to dominating high school competition with their ability and have to adapt to playing against as good or better athletes on defense in college. Meanwhile the "good but not great" athlete QBs have always had to rely on smarts, consistency and skills to succeed.
If the 2024 QB race (say Carson Beck gets plenty of playing time in 2022, wins a national title in 2023 and enters the draft) is between talented but mistake-prone redshirt freshman Arch Manning and skilled, reliable redshirt junior Gunnar Stockton. Who does Kirby choose? Based on above we already know the answer. And it is not one that favors Manning.
The "we just won a title" thing doesn't sway QBs. As Smart has been at this recruiting game so long it is amazing that he didn't know this already. Instead, no elite QB is going to come to UGA until Smart shows that he is willing and able to get them into the NFL. Instead as of right now Smart hasn't even shown that he is even willing to put or keep them in the starting lineup.
BINGO
The never-ending, content-producing saga of the UGA QB Room. Didn't the Dawgs just win a NC with essentially the same room?
This isn't the typical fan response of "We didn't want him anyway...". I honestly never thought he would come to Athens--still don't.
Head Down. Jaw Set. Keep Working.
