I think the media is desperate to understand the magic of Saban, and I don't think they ever will.

    MG,

Interesting article, but you need to change the information under the photo of Saban and Smart because Kirby kicked his a$$ this past January!!! Go Dawgs (National Champs)!!!

It would be easy to say that I wish we had gotten Saban before Alabama did, but I'm glad we're where we are now.

Saban seems like one of those individuals whose intellect combined with the personality to be a great head coach.

I like to think Kirby is like that. IIRC, Kirby's degree was in finance...it may not be engineering proper, but financial engineering requires a lot of brain power to get the concepts down.

I think Kirby has the intellect, and his personality seems what the players respond to.

I don't think it's much more complicated than that, other than having an athletic department that is on board and fully supportive. Oh, and being in the part of the country that produces top recruits!

Not bad for a late off-season article… thankfully, summer/fall practices start in less than a month! 😉

MG must have written that former caption during a red-eye session at 3 a.m. LOL

Yup! King Kirby turns into Cussin' Kirby, occasionally! 😆

    GO DAWGS!

Kirby has all the tangibles and intangibles that I think made Saban the GOAT of college football head coaches. Kirby is coming into his own earlier that Saban did in his career and Kirby has many years left to coach whereas, Saban will most likely be wrapping it up shortly. While I am certainly speculating here, it wouldn't surprise me if Kirby is hyper focused on knocking down some of Saban's milestones with some of his own. Wouldn't that be something to see in the future?

I appreciated that at the end of the championship game when Smart and Saban shook hands, Saban not only said you kicked our ass in the fourth quarter, but also said, "God bless you." He didn't have to say that, but he did.

I think their relationship is much like the relationship of Bo Shembeckler and **** Hayes back in the day. Shembechler being the coach of Michigan and **** Hayes at Ohio State. Hayes was Shembechler's mentor. Outer appearances, and the press, of course, said they hated each other. But nothing was farther from the truth. They were good friends and talked on the phone regularly.
