“I would’ve guessed if we had George (Pickens), we would’ve had a 1,000-yard receiver last year because he’s a unique skill set,”

FYI ... that isn't saying much. You don't need 5 star NFL first round pick talent to put up 1000 receiving yards in a 15 game season. You see 3rd, 5th etc. round picks do it all the time. Also frequently teams will have two 1000 yard WRs and occasionally even 3.

And yes, all the talk about playing 3 and 4 TEs this season doesn't help the WR situation at all. Not even merely talking about rotating Bowers and Gilbert in the slot helps it.

Considering what Monken accomplished with all of the injuries in the last couple of years, he's worth the millions UGA had to pay him to stay in Athens. Brilliant work.

OL is boring to a lot of fans, but a great OL is unstoppable for defenses. I think this could be one of our best OLs ever.

We are so loaded at receiver (TE+WR), even a talent like Burton left. He is the alpha dog at Bama, but he would have fought for reps in Athens.

Third year of his system in Athens, third year of him learning the SEC, lots of depth and talent everywhere--I look for UGA's best year ever on O. We need a year of good health for a change. Go Dawgs.

I agree you have to be able to move the ball on the ground to some degree. You can't be one dimensional, although if you can throw it well, that means you can still have a chance at winning.

We didn't run the ball "well" against BAMA in the 2018 NC game, they outrushed us by 50 yards, but we did run the ball ok at times. What gave us the lead was a good mix of running and throwing until late in the 3rd quarter. In the 4th quarter and in overtime we ran for 50 yards, not great and not bad, however we only threw it for 7 yards in the 4th, that combined with 2 sacks of Fromm and an INT and the rest is history. In that game we actually threw it better than they did until the 4th. But we couldn't when crunch time came. We couldn't convert 1 3rd down in the 4th. Fromm only completed one pass in the 4th quarter with2 sacks and 1 int.

Tua passed for 100 yards in the 4th and overtime with 2 TD's. Running didn't win them the game. Passing did.

Passing late in the 4th quarter won us the game that Fromm couldn't win, this year.

LSU and Clemson matched rushing yardage in their NC game, but it was Burrow passing for 400 yards and 5 TD's that quickly erased their 1st half deficit and won the game.

Ohio St. and Bama almost matched rushing yardage in their NC game but Bama more than doubled Ohio St's passing yardage and won handily. Again it was the difference in the passing game that won it.

It was the passing game of BAMA in the SECC game that made it look just too easy. Our rushing stats were almost equal.

Very informative article with pearls of football wisdom from one of the greatest OC minds in the business. Thanks.

Football is simple. You just eat the other team alive. We have lots of ways to cook their goose when cooking is called for, too, but who cares if we eat 'em with a fork or a spoon?

Amazing to me is how many folks still don't get it. Kirby not being one of them. Todd Monken not being one of them.

    Go, Dawgs!

What this guy has been able to do in spite of injuries and co-vid, etc..is just amazing. I trust Monken to put players in formations where they can excel. He has a proven track record everywhere he goes. GO DAWGS!

Would you not see the same ultimate result if the two teams had the same number of passing yards but one blew the other away rushing the ball?

"Would you not see the same ultimate result if the two teams had the same number of passing yards but one blew the other away rushing the ball?"

You definitely should. Can you name an important game recently where two top rated teams played and one of those two teams won the game due to their overwelming run game? Maybe the Rosebowl game against Oklahoma? But they never were known for their defenses. Not like a BAMA , Clemson, LSU, or the DAWGS.

Hard to blow the best teams away with the run game. A little easier through the air. See the SECC game 2021. Generational defense against a prolific passing game. Yes we outplayed them in the NC game!! But let's be honest, they were without their 2 best receivers. One went 1st round in the draft and the other went 2nd round. And with just a few minutes to go in the game, it was still anyone's game. Glad we won it.

And yes being able to run it late, helped our passing game. THey aren't mutually exclusive. Not what I was saying at all.
