Kirby's problem is that he's been too consistently great. Plus, it's the Dawgs, so...

I'm guessing they'll give it to Dykes. Even though Kirby truly deserves it, I certainly wouldn't want to belittle Dykes' achievements this year.

Here's the ridiculous thing, though: Brian Kelly has a 154-66 or .700, record in 20 years of DIV-I head coaching. His best team was slaughtered in his sole national championship appearance , and all his team's wins for that year were vacated because a trainer (under Kelly's watch) gave impermissible help to eight players for two seasons. Yet he's won three Home Depot national COYs, two AP national COY, a Walter Camp COY and an Eddie Robinson COY. That's seven national COY awards.

Kirby Smart has a 79-15, or .840, record, in seven years of DIV-I head coaching. He's gone to the CFP three times, won the natty once and is favored to win it again this year. Yet he has zero national COYs and two SEC COYs.

I'm not saying there's some sort of conspiracy against the Dawgs -- just that Kirby hasn't gotten the recognition that he deserves.

Part of it may be the sense that what you see is what you get with Kirby. He doesn't give off the vibe that he's playing three-dimensional chess or something. He's authentic. So he gets underestimated. But the dude is about as smart and organized as any coach in the country, and that straightforwardness is part of what separates him from the other guys.

This year's coaching job -- losing 15 draft picks, 13 transfers and four coaches; molding another, entirely different best defense in the country; developing 5-stars, 4-stars, 3-stars and a certain walk-on QB; pulling out wins when his players were obviously bored with the opposition; etc., etc. -- ought to be the stuff that nation COY awards are made of.

    • My apologies for posting a similar comment on Mike's earlier post on SEC COY, but it actually seems more relevant here.

I’d take CKS over ANY coach in the country. He’s my COY.

I sometimes read negative comments saying that Kirby is successful due to all the talent he has on campus. To those naysayers I’d like to mention that recruiting is a major part of being an outstanding coach. In addition, he wouldn’t be recruiting well if he wasn’t winning. They all go hand-in-hand so Kirby is clearly the Coach of the Year!!! Go Dawgs!!!

If these awards were given out to the team with the most talent/best recruiting class, they would have just gone ahead and given it to Dumbo, ooops, Jimbo, this Summer for collecting the Best Team $$$ Could Buy…but that’s not how it works. CKS and his staff take their collection of 3,4 and 5 star talent and mold them into a cohesive team that is willing to give up their individual goals for their collective achievements- If CKS isn’t the COY, there simply isn’t one!

Nobody thought UGA would be where they are right now so Kirby deserves consideration, along with the others who exceeded expectations.

With Kirby though, unlike say Riley for a prime example, even after losing all that talent and being thin and/or very inexperienced at some positions, no transfers. And to me, that sets him apart from coaches that did a lot of that, far apart.

And yet somehow wasn't the SEC Coach of the year. We should all go to fan boards and scream our outrage and then on to Twitter and insult everyone in the process, including the other candidates...

    Oh wait! We're not Tennessee...
