ATHENS — Georgia offensive coordinator Todd Monken is the highest-paid assistant coach in college football with a $2.01 million salary, per the latest USA Today data.

So. Under Moncken, deservedly the highest paid, the Dawgs have this year beaten two of the 9 other highest paid on the list, and by midnight 12/31/22, will have beaten 3 0f 9. Go Dawgs!
Grateful for SB but I would assume Monken’s playbook would open up more with a stronger arm QB, a la Beck or Brock? We see a lot of TE and WR screens with SB, but I would like to air it out more because with the way offenses are this day, there should definitely be more 1k receivers in UGA’s history.
I’m with you JTM. Bennett has done a great job and I’ll always think of him as a DGD but man, when Beck releases the ball, it’s like a rocket coming out of his hand. With that kind of release and hitting receivers in stride and not waiting on the ball to arrive, that could equate to a lot of yardage after catch! Go Dawgs!

I was thinking the same thing. But so far, I haven't seen any team stop UGA when it really matters. I mean sure they nearly lost to Missouri, but previous title teams with QBs with NFL arms all had their close calls and losses too.
SB IV's success has run contrary to everything that I thought I knew about football. I have stopped saying anything against the guy. Even if UGA gets shut out in the next game and run off the field with SB IV throwing 6 wounded duck pick 6es I won't have anything to say because you can't argue with 2 undefeated regular seasons, 1 SEC title and 1 national title. What other QB has had that type of success at UGA? Or ANYWHERE really. Tim Tebow started 3 years but only won 1 SEC title and 1 national title with the same 50/50 record against Bama, for example. And it isn't as if Tebow had an inferior supporting cast. Quite the contrary, those Gator teams were better at WR and DB.
It is said that Bill Walsh created what is now known as the west coast offense when he was with the Browns in response to his starting QB - a traditional vertical passer - getting hurt and having to play the backup, who had a much weaker arm but was far more accurate. When Walsh went to SF, he drafted Joe Montana - who dropped to the 3rd round because of a lack of arm strength and not having played in a pro style offense in college - to do on purpose what was an improvisation with the Browns and the rest was history. (Although teams DID have to start using QBs with stronger arms like Steve Young and Brett Favre in the wco, and ultimately added the RPO to the wco with mobile QBs like Russell Wilson and Pat Mahomes.)
I think that UGA will next reward the loyalty of Carson Beck, who could have entered the portal and been the starter at any of number of programs ages ago and possibly on his way to the NFL draft. But I have noted that the QBs that Smart and Monken have since gone after are "Stetson Bennett but a bit taller with a bit stronger arms" with Gunner Stockton being a particular example (especially with Stockton having Bennett's old "scout team QB" role). Who knows, maybe it will be called "the Athens offense."
That is, if Monken sticks around. If another major college wanted him they would have hired him by now - curious that Georgia Tech was this close to hiring some guy in his 60s from Tulane but didn't even give Monken a call is surreal - but I can't imagine the offense-hungry NFL going without his services much longer. It is funny ... Monken had to leave Cleveland because they went 6-10 with Baker Mayfield. Mayfield has been ditched by the Browns and Panthers since. Should have kept Monken and gotten another QB.
I never imagined an OC at UGA could be so well liked and respected by Dawg Nation. Prior to Momken, every Monday after a game was one big secon guessing session regardless of how many points were scored.
What I like most, he develops an offense that maximizes the talent he has to work with Also, an offense that can beat an opponent multiple ways depending on game situations, defensive game plans, and injuries

Only beef I have with Stetson is throwing behind his receivers... who, many times, have to slow down a step to make the catch. I review the game footages to validate this. And, he tends to heave it into a crowd so to speak if heavily pursued. Otherwise Stetson does remarkably well. I absolutely love the way he runs... fakes out his receivers and scores. I get to laughing. He would do well as a RB. Gifted young baller. Though Michigan totally dominated both lines of scrimmage against OSU, this is a different game, different opponent. Still, UGA will culminate with a big W.

You are correct. But most of that was at Jim Chaney. Chaney was an unpopular hire to begin with because UGA fans didn't think much of him when he was at Tennessee during the Derek Dooley era. Then he bounced around to Arkansas and Pitt teams that didn't do much either. Chaney was also second (or third) choice for Kirby's first staff. It is just one of those things ... had the 4th and 26 play fallen to the dirt he would have had a job at UGA for life, but since it was caught then everything that went bad with the offense was his fault. Then you had the one season with James Coley when UGA's only above average skill player on offense was D'Andre Swift, and he was no Chubb or Michel: UGA fans never really gave him a chance and looked at him as a less-experienced Chaney.
It kind of stinks though. What a lot of people don't acknowledge is that UGA has A LOT MORE TALENT on offense now than then. Right now the OL is so good - they have guys who could start at Missouri, Auburn, South Carolina etc. on the bench - that they can do whatever they want. Even in 2017, while Chubb and Michel are better than any RB that UGA has had since, right now UGA has four guys (McIntosh, Edwards, Milton, Robinson) who can approximate what Swift gave UGA if they had the 200 carries that he got in 2019. And at WR and TE? Yeesh. Back in 2019, UGA's best WR (other than Pickens) was Lawrence Cager, who was only in Athens because he couldn't get on the field for Miami, and Cager got hurt and only played 8 games. Right now UGA has 2 TEs that would be 1st round picks in different situations (Washington and Bowers, and Bowers will be one regardless) plus 4 guys in McConkey, Jackson, Rosemy-Jacksaint and Blaylock (to speak nothing of younger and or injured players like Bell, Delp, Mitchell and Smith) that put the quantity and quality of the guys at WR and TE in the 2017-2019 teams to shame. Chaney and especially Coley are probably looking at UGA's riches and saying "if I had the chance to coach those guys I would still be in Athens ... or perhaps I would be a head coach or in the NFL."
Yep. True !! Now UGA needs to pony up a Significant Pay Raise to help deter him from wanting to leave. If the offer is Big enough and Bright enough from another school or back to the Pros it might not Stop him from leaving. But maybe at the least a Nice, Solid pay raise will give him Pause to stop and think about UGA and his family. He’s been around allot of places, he has Really, Really Good experience in particular at the college level. I’d Really hate to see Kirby leave at least for years and years to come, but If Kirby got the notion to want to try the Pros in the next couple years it sure wouldn’t break my heart to see Monken become HC. He Now knows UGA and has established himself on the recruiting trail. Replacing Kirby in today’s climate would be a monumental task, that is with someone with a proven track record. Again I Sure Hope Kirby is here for many years to come, but should he depart in the next couple of years, I think Monken would be an excellent promote from within choice.
Great comment, not nitpicking either, but Tebow actually won 2 National Championships..2007 and 2009.
I wonder if the demands of recruiting would make the opportunity to be a Head Coach for a P5 college program less attractive to a man his age. If that’s the case, he may consider his current gig the perfect balance of lucrative but less demanding. I guess we will know soon enough…….

Chris Leak was the QB of the 2006 Gators national title team. Tim Tebow was the backup, and outside garbage time - and a couple of critical plays against LSU - was used primarily as a runner. Leak had 3000 total yards and 26 TDs that year.

Monken is 56. The same age as Nick Saban when he took the Alabama job. I honestly still say that Georgia Tech should have hired him, or at least tried to in order to show that they were serious about winning, instead of doing the usual mickey mouse thing of deciding between an alum and a head coach from Tulane, a lower profile "geek school" similar to themselves. They didn't even make a run at the Syracuse coach, where building a winning program is a lot tougher these days - not so much in the 1980s-mid 90s when they were at their peak - than it is in downtown Atlanta.
And yes, he makes $2 million a year at UGA, but the going rate for a head coach is $5 million.
You said in a Far Better way what I was trying to say. Lucrative but Less Demanding !! That’s the ticket !! UGA should pony up such a hefty raise that it’d be very hard for him to resist. He might Still go if a school offers him really big $$$ and no reasonable person could blame him as it’s His life and His family. But I Hope that UGA will make it very hard for him to Want to go else where. Good comments on your part !!
