ESPN makes playoff predictions for 2023 college football season
Georgia became the first team in the College Football Playoff era to win back-to-back national championships. And most of ESPN’s writers believe the Bulldogs will be well positioned to potentially win it all once again.
Comments
David Hale is an imbecile--All the other writers have Georgia number one.
The experts over at ESPN seem to have a lot of love for USC. Did I miss something, or is USC becoming the new Notre Dame?
GO DAWGS!
It seems like you guys wouldn't be happy with ESPN if they predicted Georgia for all 4 spots in the playoff.
We will see! Predictions are just Predictions! I feel CKS will have our players ready. Go Dawgs!
David Hale says alabama still has Saban. You know what's funny about that? Georgia still has Kirby Smart.
I think it's more the fact that the one clown didn't pick them in ANY spot. The year is what it turns out to be but not picking at the beginning of the year is just plain silly. All that nonsense about alabama should be number one till someone beats them. Guess that mentality ONLY works for alabama.
You're basing this on what? The two comments that were up when you opined?
Let me join in on the Hale bashing. UGA and Alabama were both in the playoff in 2017 and 2021. One play here or there and they would have also been in the playoff in 2018 and 2022. So, is Hale predicting that a 12-1 UGA whose only loss would be to 13-0 Alabama in the SECCG would somehow not make the playoff? Why, when that was not the case in 2017 and 2021 and would not have been in 2018 and 2022?
Saban picked a kid as OC and a has been at DC. I've been saying for years that a key ingredient to saban's run was keeping Kirby Smart so long. Since he left, they've gone down hill. They are very beatable.
This is off topic but, I keep hearing how Coach Saban is rebuilding his team, for the last two years Alabama's excuse has been rebuilding, so I went back to look at the 247sports recruiting rankings between Saban, and Kirby, Sabans ranking Classes from 2016-2023 have been-1,1,5,1,2,1,2,1, In the same time Kirby's Recruiting Classes have been-6,3,1,2,1,4,3,2, so why is Saban having to rebuild his team with that kind of recruiting, and is this just an excuse, because he hasn't won a NC the last two years? If anything they should be saying he's underachieving with that kind of recruiting.
David Hale... 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😜😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I'm just expressing my shock over USC being included in 6 out of 8 of these predictions. Maybe I have underestimated them, or maybe USC is still the media darling that they (and ND) have always been despite their recent performances. They should at least be able to get passed Utah to get this kind of consideration.
As far as Hale is concerned, he is welcome to predict whatever he chooses, I just think it's interesting that he was unable to qualify it with anything better than "Well, you don't know Saban". The other ESPN predictors seem to understand Saban and Smart, and that the precedence has been set for both to be included in the CFB Playoffs and there's a reasonable (if not strong) likelihood for that to happen again this season.
GO DAWGS!
When God wanted to grant you the ability to THINK-- You thought he said Sink and said No Thank You:-)
David Hale: Alabama, Ohio State, USC, Oregon
"The lone writer to not pick Georgia was Hale. He pointed to the fact that Alabama still has Nick Saban as a motivating factor for the Crimson Tide entering this upcoming season."
Ummmmm, UGA has Kirby Smart, I think it's fair to call that a tie.
Until USC and Lincoln Riley figures out how to play Defense they won't get into the Playoffs. Having Oregon get in, but UGA not in it is.... well, brain damaged.
Seems like maybe Hale and Rittenberg are just trying to be edgy...
@Michael_Scarn
Oh that is even worse. He is picking 2 Pac-12 teams. When the Pac-12 has only been able to produce 2 teams to get through the season with less than 2 losses in the entire playoff era (Oregon in 2014, Washington in 2016). Usually there is only 1 team in the Pac-12 that has less than 3 losses. Picking a second Pac-12 team to make it over a Big 12 or ACC team is just dumb because both conferences have done much better in the playoff than the Pac-12, who hasn't won a game since 2014 (Oregon over FSU).
Also, picking USC and Oregon makes no sense. Utah beat USC twice last year, including a blowout in the title game. USC is losing Jordan Addison to the draft they had a "meh" recruiting class especially on defense where they only signed 8 players (5 of them 3 stars with the only notable recruit being #2 LB). Also - even though everyone is doing their level best to ignore this nationally for some reason - Washington actually had a much better season last year than Oregon including beating the Ducks in Eugene. Had Michael Penix Jr been a 5 star coming out of high school like Bo Nix and Caleb Williams, he's the guy who wins the Heisman last year as he had better numbers than both of them on a lesser team.
There's being a contrarian, there's fishing for hot takes and there's being just flat out goofy. Picking the Pac-12 to have 2 teams when they haven't had a single team in 6 years is the latter. And not even picking the 2 best teams in the Pac-12 last year to be one of them - Utah and Washington - is even beyond goofiness.
Thank you DAvid Hale. You just gave the Dawgs some extra motivation during off-season workouts. Keep making intelligent statements like this and you’ll be running ESPN one day.
Does David Hale actually think Saban can out X-O every coach he faces regardless of talent? I have a huge amount of respect for Coach Saban as a Coach, Motivator, and Recruiter but there are other Coaches who can scheme just as well as he can and when there is comparable talent, he doesn't automatically have the upper hand like used too. He has not slipped nor fallen; other programs have come up to his level. If Bama wins it all in '23, it won't be just because they have Coach Saban.
