Bama's last 3 OCs - Lane Kiffin, Steve Sarkisian, Tom O'Brien - ran pro style offenses that required QBs with elite ability (they won the 2016 title with Jacob Coker only thanks to Derrick Henry running it 400 times). By hiring Tommy Rees from Notre Dame as OC, it seems like they are going back to a scheme that allows the sort of solid college QBs that they had before - Greg McElroy, AJ McCarron - plus a strong running game and defense to win games.
