Why blaming Mike Bobo for Georgia offense is an easy but oversimplified take
Some Georgia fans have fallen into the quickest and easiest trap in college football: Blaming the offensive coordinator.

The 3rd-and-2 slow developing handoff parallel to the line is indefensible.
Thanks, Mike....you hit the nail squarely and hard.....I'd just add one fact.....South Carolina is a much much better team than their record would indicate. They are missing just a few players from being a top 10 team. They are well coached, top 5 in the SEC and we benefited greatly from the challenge they presented....we will look back on the obstacles we over came in week 3 and be thankful, they are preparing us for what will come our way!
I’ve seen the same play work for good gains. It’s up to the QB to get out of a bad play and up to the players to execute whatever play is called.
I don’t know what it is about Coach Bobo, but he has always been targeted by Dawg fans as a bad play caller even when his offenses were averaging 40+ points per game.
To me, the difference between the first and second halves was Kirby finally had to allow Bobo to take the training wheels off Carson.
Good points Mike and I agree that some fans want to blame Bobo whenever things don’t go right. Funny you’d write this article because yesterday when Edwards scored our first TD on a 2nd down (7 yard) run up the middle. I said to the guy next to me that Bobo would have been crucified by a few “know-it-all” fans if Edwards had been tackled for no gain. We need to remember that all offensive coordinators struggle at times. Don’t forget the Missouri, Kentucky, Samford and Kent State games last year were not impressive. I was actually impressed with our halftime adjustments yesterday and how we took control of the game and dominated the second half. Go Dawgs!!!
Bobo is far from Monken.
Knocking on bowers isn't fair. Less explosive? He's injured and still playing harder than some of the guys out there. Plus there's no real compliment to him. Defenses zero in on him each play. Plus it's on Beck to not put him in a bad situation.
Excellent article, Mike.
Go, Dawgs!
I just don't get the dogged determination to defend Mike Bobo. How many passes were thrown downfield in the first half? The longest pass went for 11 yards. "Oh, there was adjusting during the half." WHAT? There should have been no need for adjusting. I firmly believe Ga. has the talent, but if the right plays are not called, that talent is wasted. Honestly, I watched this during the Richt years. Unimaginative play calling. Game on the line, run it up the middle three times and punt. I have nothing against Bobo personally. I don't know him. But I see his play calling, and it restricts the effectiveness of the team.
I predict that Bobo will be eventually cut loose regardless of all the assurances from Smart about what a good coordinator he is. In the end, winning is what talks the loudest.
Beck was 27 of 35 77.1% for 269-yards. Not bad, especially while missing all SEC WR McConkey, Bowers clearly less than 100%, Milton limited and Edwards playing in his first game of 2023. My only complaint - lack of passing attempts in the red-zone, and not enough effort from the O-line during the first half. By Comparison Rattler was 22 of 42 52.4% for 256-yards.
Almost no first-time starter will match what a 6th year - two-year starter has brought to the table.
Georgia needs to get healthy, come out in the first quarter not expecting to beat every opponent with ease, and the FG kicking must get fixed. Otherwise, all is well...
I see some pieces coming together on offense as long as D. Edwards is in the back field. Maybe throw some more passes down field and to our play makers like Bowers, Mews, Bell, and Rara. Get Ladd M back with a more confident Beck and I see a better more potent offense. Try Bell more at running back because it is really lacking production. Lovett is finding his groove and I think Bobo and KS just has to open up the play calling. Let loose and don't worry about Beck making a mistake. I feel the offense is coming along, just be more imaginative. Go Dawgs!!!
