CFP undervaluing SEC schedule triggers questions, closed-door conversations
ATHENS — The College Football Playoff rankings have everyone talking, just as they were intended to do.

Good article Mike. It was great reading new information and I’m fascinated that Sagarin has our schedule #1 which makes sense considering we will have faced 4 top 10 teams after tomorrow. Dang tough schedule. Go Dawgs and stomp the Vols!!!
Penn State at 4 is a joke.
This playoff delimma displays the truly subjective nature of these rankings when it comes down to it:
If SOS really was a strong determining factor then the Dawgs would be ranked in the Top 10. However, the eye test says that our losses and the way we have played in those losses ultimately takes priority over SOS.
If SOS was super important- more than the eye test - then Penn State and Texas would not be in the Top 5.
The overall SOS in the SEC is much higher than the B1G yet commands little respect in the rankings.
There is no compelling reason at this point to add a 9th SEC game unless SOS is a more relevant factor in these rankings.
Wins and losses command too much weight when ranking playoff teams.
More parity has in fact come to more teams due to NIL and the portal. However, this season I believe much of the unexpected results and close contests is due to the elimination of divisions within all Power conferences. This has created an open field of new matchups and unfamiliar foes which has created more shake up this season than normal.
I predict that the CFP Committee will receive more criticism this season than ever before when the final rankings comes out.
So the Dawgs get elft out last year (with 1 loss) supposedly due to lack of schedule strength. At least at this point this year, we’re left out because of 2 losses, never mind playng the toughest schedule in the country including 3 vs. Top 12 teams on the road & another vs. Top 12 at home, plus non-conference against a top 25 (Clemson).
F the committee. I’d forget going to 9 game conference schedule, cancel our future year “tough” out of conference games and fill them with what Indiana, Penn St, Ohio St., Brigham Young, etc. do. Not great for fans or the sport, but if that’s they way the game is played so be it.
@MikeGriffith great stuff and lots to ponder. But I think you have inserted the AP poll order, not the CFP. Miami gives it away. That and the Dawgs are 12
the committee has bias. Eye test and wins seems to be the two favorite this week. I believe the dawgs might be ranked higher if the ole Miss loss hadn’t been such a whooping. Also the committee is looking at who beat whom. Dawgs now have to not only beat Tenn to move up, but to jump ole miss and bama, they will need to dominate these last three games
BAMA loss to VAnderbilt or UGA loss to Ole MIss? Which is worse? UGA beat down of Texas or Bama beat down of LSU? WHIch is the better win?
Crooked!!! All of em. Integrity no longer exists. But, will rise again, soon. Lol
Only 9 games into the season, and....This bunch of BIG10 Groupies & Bureaucrats [CFP Committee] have already exposed their mandate and true agenda. Find the BIG10 some more Championships.…whether they're real or not.
Fyi...I still consider UGA to be the 2023 Co-Champions, even though they didn't get to play. I base that on the return of injured personnel during the '23 CFP Semifinals. Which elevated the way UGA played vs FSU...and would have elevated their CFP play.
UGA would've been included In the '23 CFP....if the so-called Committee had used the same high powered peognosticating abilities, they used to keep FSU "OUT"....[can't win with a backup QB].
I.e., UGA can win it all with a fully stocked roster...unlike the team whose only loss came in a postseason game against a top 10 ranked Alabama. "We're looking for the best teams"....my ass!
They're looking for the best non-SEC Teams.
Not very sharp...are they?. Lol...lots of time to turn THAT worm. Lol
Go get em Big Red. Tear em a new one Saturday.
"Smart correctly stated when a two-loss Georgia was left out of the 2018 four-team playoff in favor of a one-loss Oklahoma that every year, the CFP committee would select different data points and metrics that mattered most in their decisions."
Maybe so, but it was irrelevant that year. At no point has the CFP ever picked a team with more losses. This was consistent with the BCS, where losses was the biggest component in their formula. Everything else - wins, conference titles, strength of schedule - is used to break ties among the teams with the same number of losses. So the playoff was going to be 13-0 Clemson, 13-0 Alabama, 12-0 Notre Dame and 12-1 Oklahoma. UGA was only a candidate in the minds of UGA fans. Kirby was just playing the game to claim otherwise. Even if there was ever going to be a team where the CFP would break their tendencies for, it wasn't going to be one with a 3 TD loss to LSU and their best wins against 3 loss Florida and Kentucky.
Not sure what people want the committee to do here. The committee can't take 5 SEC teams and it can't take 3 loss teams over 1 loss teams. Yes, the slate of Texas, Alabama, Ole Miss, Tennessee and Clemson - with 3 at home and 1 at a neutral site - is the toughest of any by far in the country, but blame that on an SEC office that chose rolling out the red carpet to Big 12 interlopers over taking care of longtime members that helped build the conference into what it is today. The playoff can't take teams with 3 conference losses, nor can it let a single conference make up nearly half the field.
This iteration of a "Playoff" is no different than previous schemes, a complete scam to maximize profit. Just a cursory glance at teams ahead of UGA right now, it’s implausible that strength of schedule is a ranking factor. Mathematically impossible.
PSU, Indiana, Miami, BYU…
Don’t piss down my back & tell me it’s raining. Personally offensive.
there are 5-6 teams in the SEC that can beat Ohio st or Oregon on a neutral field!
When the AP & Coaches polls start the year out...with 6 or 7 SEC Teams in the top 10. It only makes sense, tha 4 or 5 of the top12, should be SEC Teams. They are going to beat up on each other, in arguably the most physical and talented Conference. Would you pick Notre Dame over any of the Top 4 SEC Teams?. Lol
UGA was ranked 5 spots below Tennessee...yet, the Dawgs were favored by 9.5 points. Go figure!
Just goes to show.…even the most ardent "Fans & Experts"....[Gamblers and Bookies]....know that UGA is inexplicably, the most underrated Team in CFB.
Wonder how far #2 OSU will fall, after losing to "badass Illinois" this weekend?. "Whew!....The Fighting Illini!!! Wouldn't want to have play them [tic]", said nobody....ever. Lmao.
The Dawgs fell from #3 to #12, after losing to Ole Miss....apparently, because of their record and the eye test. The "eye test" has no parameters for a HC to use as a guideline. So, it's subjectively used to manipulate the polls by Corporate Media and CFPC members.
For instance...the Committee had issues with UGA's offensive performance....so, they dropped em 9 spots. Lol....what about the defense and special teams. Of the top 20 Teams....which of the teams, is "more complete". Illinois?...Boise St?....BYU?....ND???!!!
Nope....everybody knows where the talent went and which HC's focus on player development over records and stats. Those teams and coaches reside in the SEC, despite the hyperbole to the contrary.
UGA's 2 losses [to 2 Top 10 Teams] came with a Win against #1 Texas and one of the ACC's best...Clemson. No Team can touch that resume'. Especially, now that they have another Top 10 win against UT.
