I believe Gunner has been waiting (and preparing) his whole life for this moment... I'm convinced he will make the very best of his opportunity and the Dawgs will benefit from it! 😎💪
Thank goodness we went for a miracle, not a chance in Hades of being successful, Hail Mary with one second in the half rather than kicking a high potential field goal with one of the best kickers in the game. I am glad we placed our trust in our exceptional corps of receivers rather than the kid who rarely misses.
Shades of going for 2 for no reason.
I am glad we have Gunner and I have full faith he can bring it home but seriously, nice play call, coach.
It doesn't sound good from what I have read about this kind of injury and recovery. Unsure about surgery or if he just needs time to heal.
Kirby can't wait around too long before moving ahead with one QB or another. Bobo will have to develop a realistic game plan for Gunner. I know Gunner can handle it as he was a pretty poised dude who managed getting shoved into the pressure cooker off the bench. I haven't seen enough of his passing ability to know what he is truly capable of, but you know whomever we play on January 1st will load the box, try and stuff the run, and make him throw. They will also bring pressure. My bet is Kirby will lean on the defense and try to control the clock as much as possible with the running game. That may or may not be possible, but Bobo and the team have got 3 weeks to try and figure it out if Beck is a no go.
GO DAWGS!!
I understand people’s frustration, but it’s easy to second guess. No option was great. Also, let’s remember that Beck wasn’t exactly setting records against Texas.
I believe Gunner is ready! He can take off with it and do plenty of damage with his running ability. This is an added element to the Dawgs offense that their opponent will have to game-plan for. I hope Carson is okay, but I’m not worried about having Gunner in there!
GO DAWGS!
A UCL injury very likely means Beck is out. Gunner looked very good on that first drive. After we got the lead, the play calling became way too conservative. Instead of letting Gunner do his thing, it seemed like Bobo (and maybe Kirby) didn’t trust Gunner. That conservative play calling almost cost us the game. Let Gunner throw it. He also gives us a real running threat at QB. If turned loose, Gunner will be fine. Don’t go ultra conservative like we did after the first drive of the second half against Texas.
Two first and goals from the 4 yard line got us two FGs. Why? Poor play calling. With Gunner’s athleticism, one might think rolling him out with a run-pass option could be a good idea.
Seeking a second opinion is good…..it means Tommy Johns surgery is not mandatory or needed immediately….best case is that Carson can rehab for three weeks then start, and rotate with Gunner. At this point Pugs and Rashada need as many reps as possible…..I am optimistic, Beck is a fighter and it will take a dire prognosis to keep him from playing….At any rate, Gunner's time is here and we could not be in better hands!
@JBMDawg46…like your viewpoint. I hope Bobo doesn't put a playbook together for Gunner that is too conservative. We've got to be able to move the ball down the field vertically as well as with the running game. Use Gunner's legs but also use his arm even if it's slants and shorter passes to the TEs. When we've used the TEs like we did much more against the Vols it worked great. Controlling the ball and not turning it over will be key. I do not like relying on those WR screens either, because they have rarely worked for us.
I guess we'll see what Bobo can come up with. I feel sure he will have some special plays drawn up to try and keep the defense off-balance. I just do not think we will be able to come in and run the ball down any team's throats.
@SufferinginAtlanta Actually Beck would have been setting records against Texas had it not been for Arian Smith and Dillon Bell (0 catches in the SEC title game for a guy that Dawgnation tried to pass off as another Deebo Samuel) dropping balls that guys who play for the over 11 teams in the playoff catch all the time. This includes Arizona State, who went 3-9 in 2012 and 2013, as well as SMU - who was an AAC team before joining the ACC this season - and Boise, who is still a MWC school. Those guys suddenly deciding to catch the ball after Beck got hurt - including five times by Arian Smith - had to make Carson Beck's teeth grate. That and the 3 catches by Dominic Lovett … for 0 yards. (That, people, is an inability to separate or get yards after the catch.)
Beck was a good soldier for UGA, waiting his turn behind a clearly lesser talented guy who had the advantage of playing with a much more talented supporting cast, only to continually get shredded on social media by a fanbase who wanted his backups to play. Well one of those backups that everyone wanted to play in place of Beck last season, Brock Vandagriff, went 4-8 at Kentucky this year. Under 1600 yards, 57% completions, 10 TDs and 8 INTs. (Good stats for a QB in the 1980s SEC. Probably enough to get a Galen Hall or Bill Arnsparger team to the Sugar Bowl back in the day.) Fascinating how all of the "bench Beck and play Vandagriff!" types who were furious when Vandagriff entered the portal and blamed Kirby for not giving Vandagriff "playing time and a fair shot to compete for the job" have gone crickets now. (You guys know who you are.) It is also fascinating how all of the "we need a mobile QB instead of Beck!" were saying the exact opposite during the Jake Fromm and Justin Fields days in 2018, when Fromm was "another Tom Brady" and for years only wanted to recruit mobile QBs to move them to other positions, like the "D'Wan Mathis may move to WR!" frenzy. This despite Beck being able to run circles around Fromm.
Yeah, and Kirby Smart threw Beck under the bus, blaming HIM for the injury by saying "he should have gotten rid of the ball quicker." On a hail mary pass. To this group of WRs that he recruited. Amazing. Beck will be healthy by the NFL combine. Hopefully the Raiders will draft him. When Beck is throwing to Brock Bowers and other guys actually able to get open and catch the ball, everyone who spent the last 2 years wanting Beck run out of Athens will become his biggest fans.
And no, Gunner Stockton's "mobility" - I used scare quotes because do not mistake Gunner for Jalen Hurts or Josh Allen in the running capability department - won't make Arian Smith, Dillon Bell and Dom Lovett into SEC caliber WRs. Fortunately against Notre Dame it won't matter. But in the semifinal and final game, that might be another story.
I'm pretty excited for Gunner. Hate to see Beck hurt, but hopefully the doctors will get him taken care of. The good news about Gunner is that no one knows what he can do, which makes it harder to scheme. Perhaps more of a GT type offense. And it's not like they are reinventing the wheel, because he knows their current system. I'm more concerned with his backup. Two guys that aren't ready at this point.
Anyone who thinks Gunner being the QB is a good thing, I don't know what to say. He's gritty, he can run a little bit. But you just can't insert him in and expect a better passing option. If so, Kirby would have already been there and done that.
Bobo kept the reigns on BEck in almost every game until we'd fall behind so much he had to turn him loose in the 2nd half. WIth Gunner it's going to be bubble screens and trying to run the ball. Low scoring. Teams already don't respect our passing, now they will load the box to choke the run and play as tight as possible on the receivers and dare Stockton to beat us passing. Can he do that? THere is no history that says he can. Even if we get by Notre Dame somehow(they stopped Ga. Tech's run game(and Army's) in their tracks, we will eventually have to score points. perhaps several. Running takes time off the clock, which is fine playing with a lead, but get down a couple of TD's and all of that goes away. Can Gunner stand back there with the game on the line and wing it around without misreading a coverage becasue he just doesn't have the experience?
I will pull and root for the team as hard as ever, but if BEck can't go(appears he cant) it's not a blessing in disguise. IMHO.
Tired of the second guesses about the play call. Hail Mary's are pretty common. I bet if Kirby had called for a field goal attempt of almost 60 yards and it was blocked and returned, he would be second guessed by the same people. I know this and other forums are for fans to contribute opinions and at times criticism, but after what Kirby has done for UGA football, I will trust his decisions. Funny how Kirby is still winning games with such poor decisions.
