Kiffin is just saying what we all are thinking
Several observations here, first off Joel Klatt hates the SEC and is a joke of an analyst. I may not care a lot for Lane's antics, but he is right. The criteria used for having a National champion is seriously flawed, especially if a true National Championship is your charge. For example, all conferences are not equal. Winning a conference alone is not going to guarantee the best teams get a bye as evident this year. ND should be made to play in a conference if they want to be eligible to make the playoffs. The committee alone has to much power for their level of competence. They've seldom placed the 4 best in the previous playoff system. I understand there will always be teams that are arguably better that will be left out but there is no way you can convince me that the eye test says that Indiana and especially SMU are arguably better than Alabama, Ole Miss or South Carolina, none of which is a conference champion. I just don't see it. Strength of schedule has to be a factor. As I said the system is flawed and will hopefully get better. However, the system is only as good as its weakest link and that is the committee. JMO!
12 teams, 14 teams, 16 teams….it just doesn't matter….the only thing that matters is that you have the best teams competing against one another….the only way to accomplish that is to use a metric which considers wins/loses and strength of schedule and conference championship….if ND refuses to join a conference, so be it, just a lost opportunity for them.
Lane Kiffin v Joel Klatt….Tis the season for Asshats, but Lane's TRUTH trumps Klatt's verbal diarrhea.
I actually agree with Lane, and not at all suprised by the Klatt reply, considering the source it came from..GoDAWGS!
A little off topic but I keep hearing comments about how dominant ND was over IU. Really? What game did they watch?
Yeah right Lane Kiffin. If you wanted to make the playoff you shouldn't have lost to 4-8 Kentucky or to 7-5 Florida. Just like Georgia Tech, you got your team up to play Georgia while losing to lesser teams. If you do what Tennessee does and essentially concede the game against UGA while focusing your efforts on the teams that you can beat then you are 10-2 and in the playoffs alongside the Vols. Instead you - and Alabama - got to enjoy your ultimately meaningless wins against UGA and are sitting at home.
Kiffin, while Dabo Swinney may have lost today, there is a reason why he won 2 titles and has been a consistent winner at a second tier program in a second rate conference while you were at two elite programs - Tennessee and USC - and your career highlight is beating the third place team in the Big 10 in the Peach Bowl. Oh yeah, and the guy who you beat in that game? He's in the playoff too - won a game no less - and you're not. Lost to Oregon and Ohio State powerhouses but beat everybody else.
All right SEC fans. Ohio State is up 21-0 over Tennessee. Using your arguments, they were no more deserving of a playoff spot than Indiana and SMU, right? Lane Kiffin? Where are you? Are you going to tweet troll the committee over this game too?
It’s a committee issue. Unfortunately I too would have some teams in the top 10 that may not be the best as we tend to look a the number of losses more than quality of wins. I don’t have a solution. But I’m sure by the time we get to the semis. The games should be more competitive than the 4 team playoff.
This is a strange year. No dominant team. Georgia will be lucky to beat Notre Dame and Penn State. Defense will have to play great every game to have a chance with this offense. We can do it but I wouldn't bet the mortgage.
If I had to pick a team it would be either Ohio State or Oregon. Maybe Texas but Ewers is too inconsistent.
Maybe Gunner will surprise and the wide receivers will decide to catch the passes thrown to them but I'm not holding my breath. I'm crossing my fingers…Go Dawgs!
I would bet Georgia every day. No way I EVER doubt us against notre dame or penn state. Seems folks would learn that choosing against us is a bad idea.
these first round games have been awful.
If today proves anything it proves that the home field advantage is a big deal. And Ohio st finally looks like a championship contender. Oh to have a Jeremiah smith type receiver on our team!
"ND should be made to play in a conference if they want to be eligible to make the playoffs."
Why? By your own argument, winning a conference doesn't necessarily indicate anything about a team's quality in the context of the playoffs.
I wouldn't call myself an "SEC fan," but I don't have any trouble saying that Tennessee doesn't belong in the playoffs. Neither does Ohio State. Two ok teams duking it out, and one obviously came more prepared, and is working with a clear home field advantage. Good for them, bad for everyone else. Another miserable, boring game that isn't worth more than half an hour of anyone's time. What we've been watching for the last two days was always the obvious problem with expanding the field to 12 teams. We couldn't even get consistently competitive matchups with 4 teams. What did everyone think was going to happen when we started letting in already-established also-rans?
